[Archive] What is a Gaoler?

Vexxus:

With the recent focus on the Border Town Burning warbands, and possible GH6 painting competition, I thought it would be prudent to discuss exactly what a Gaoler IS.

Dictionary.com defines Gaoler simply as someone who guards prisoners; a jailer.

Border Town Burning provides the following lore for Chaos Dwarf Warband, Gaoler: “Of all the Black Dwarfs it is the wicked Gaolers who are the most infamous. The minds of these merciless fiends are bent on inflicting pain and their repulsive methods strike fear into the hearts of men. Gaolers delight in the torture of their prisoners for whom death never comes quick enough”. Also included is a special rule for Gaolers which reads “Nasty Reputation: Gaolers are known for their brutality. The dreaded sight of them and the very thought of being captured causes fear in Humans”.

So my question is to the community: How would we like to collectively portray Gaolers?

I think that some basic discussion on the direction this community would like to take Gaolers would be highly beneficial, and is an excellent opportunity for us to help mold the shape of Chaos Dwarf incursion into Mordheim via the good people at Border Town Burning.

Grimstonefire:

I consider ‘Gaoler’ just to be another way of describing a torturer.

So some wicked looking weapons.  The important factor here is that the model should look like it could cause fear.  That should be the primary focus, and the better people can convey that the more realistic their entry will be.

torn:

just think of a chaos dwarf version of the kiddy snatcher from chitty chitty bang bang.

im not sure if the word gaoler is still in use but most fantasy novels use it instead of jailer, it just means the same thing.

im sure as far as a BTB gaoler is concerned it will be a very angry very mean chaos dwarf with a very big mancatcher.

Ishkur Cinderhat:

Mix a slave trader (note: whip) with a prison warden (note: large keyring) and the Persian Emissary in 300 (note: whip, note: big hat), add some scars, hooks and brutal weapons and you pretty much get the image of the Gaoler that I have in mind. :hat

Yep thats what i see with maybe a rack of tortue implements ,spiked whip and lots of chains handcuffs etc:hat

WarplockMonkey:

I would think lots of flayed skin, maybe a cloak or a mask/helmet with a flayed human face stretched across it

Also, a barbed whip or the thingy that that big fat skaven guy has

And big, spikey boots, with an arrow on it pointing to the sole, and above it written ‘head goes here’ :stuck_out_tongue:

cornixt:

“gaol” is the old spelling of “jail”, which came from the Americas. Gaols are now known as prisons in the UK. Both pronounced roughly the same, although some colonials would use a hard “g” because they didn’t know.

Kera foehunter:

WOW !! we here in the us call jail the pokey. Is border town this year gw game of games??

Hashut’s Blessing:

I would say it is a cross between a slave master and a torturer (in terms of the image in my mind). they extract information from slaves before the mines and sometimes just for fun. Think of them as having manacles, thumb screws, a wicked grin, a tongue-strecther, a red-hot iron, an inwardly spiked collar on a chain (in his hand/on his belt, not around his neck :D) and the like. Leather scale mail IMO, a she is not destined as a combatist, but needs some protection from rowdy torturees. basically, lots of medieval torture devices (an iron maiden behind him would be cool, but not feasible. Likewise with a garrot [is that the word? it’s gone from my head. The cage you put people in and hang up so they get eaten by birds/die of starvation/hunger…], which could instead be put on the prison wagon! grins wickedly. Must do conversions! Oh and a rack too! writes all this down).

Theory_Man:

The first thing that popped into my mind of what a Gaoler is, is a combination of Xena and a dominatrix.

Just Joking.

In all seriousness, I concur with Herr Cinderhat image of what a Gaoler is though, the children snatcher from chitty chitty bang bang would also be cool figure as a Chaos Dwarf.

Kera foehunter:

lol how she get in that outfit.

Please make a unit of these immediately. haha! j/k

Hammerhand:

It does say that it is their reputation that makes them terrifying, not their visage. I would go for the definite inclusion of a large keyring, possibly chained to his waist. If the gaoler is principly in charge of taking and breaking slaves, which seem to be quite a status symbol in the eyes of the CDs, then you are also looking at a rich, powerfull and influential sort.

Thats a very good point, slaves are an essential part of CD society, so Gaoler may be a very prestigious role. On the flip side of the coin they may be a gruesome reject who is looked down upon for having to deal with lowly slaves all day... the vague nature of what we KNOW should provide ample room for imagination and creativity when submitting a Gaoler entry for the recently posted Golden Hat VI competition!

@Hashut’s blessing

A “garotte” is a wire that is used to strange someone. The Spaniards made it into a device of execution, made infamous by the execution of Montezuma during the invasion/exploration of the Conquistadors.

The device you are describing is a “gibbet”, used for the public display of hanged corpses.

Hashut’s Blessing:

I knew it wasn;t a garotte and later remembered what a garotte was. Gibbet is exactly what I was thinking of, but the name eluded me greatly

Vexxus:

Update:

For the model I have converted for Gaoler, I definately went for the crude side, the down and dirty enslaving crook feared by all! mmmwahahaha

Anyone else go another direction?

Sojourn:

well, mine is still in pieces… but I’m hoping to go for the confident “you don’t scare me” look. I’m thinking it’s alllllll about presence

but for a gaoler in general, I picture ropes or chains, handcuffs or shackles and keys.

Willmark:

I have a good sketch now and if I can pull it all of it will look cool. I have a firm idea of the gaoler and the “additionals”

Hashut’s Blessing:

Mine is as I mentioned. lots of restraints and torture equipment. He’d make even a sado-masochist quiver in fear of the items!
