[Archive] oh crap.... (help with green stuff)

Ogranoth blackhammer:

i am crap with GS. i just GSed my first CD warrior…the beard and scale armor came out…well…X.X

i’ll post pics in a few minutes.

Kera foehunter:

well hurry i can’t wait

Ogranoth blackhammer:

btw, nice cat.

cornixt:

Practise makes perfect. Don’t think that the good sculpters were born that way!

cornixt
Well Sjoerdo and Iskhur might have been that way since birth, Tjubs and Warplock too.

fluffstalker:

Ha. I think that might be what mine looks like once I get my minis in a week or so. heh…Your not the only one strugglin to get started.

Ogranoth blackhammer:

should i throw him out you think?

GRNDL:

Nah, I think he looks pretty good. I like the forward posing and the way he’s brandishing the axe. On my models, I found it hard to get the arms positioned correctly and still rank up. IMO, the beard tubes could be a little thinner and more even, but you could add a few more strands on top. The armour is a good start, but like the beards, could be a bit more even. I think its a great start and the feel of it will come with time. Personally, I don’t think its a good idea to throw out a model, unless you really despise it. Even it its not up to par with your later models, you can always stick him in the back or middle ranks.

Swissdictator:

It took me many rounds of GSing before I found a way to do it, and not only do it… but to make it look like I wanted. My CD were my first outing with GS.

Don’t be discouraged. After trying it out and getting the hang of it, you’ll do just fine. Worst case scenario? This guy is in the back rank and first to die. He’s not that bad honestly… my first attempt was not much better actually.

Just keep plugging away and you’ll be surprised how quickly things improve!

Edit:

A quote from one of my heros: “Never ever give up” - Winston Churchill.

I may have paraphrased the quote, I hope not, but it is the truth.

grom:

well - same as everyone before said - train, train, train and dont give up…

lil tip - u dont have to make all in one step, try to make it in several steps (i.e. 1. armour, 2. beard, 3. details - that was way in what I done my first conversion - CoolMiniOrNot - Skaven - Eshin Sorcerer by Arekarkadiusz)

Swissdictator:

Grom’s got some good advice there, you really hit it on the head. (Hat?)

Try figuring out just one part first, it might take several tries… and don’t be afraid of removing the beard/armor if you have to. Eventually you’ll be happy. Do it in groups of 5 though, 5 attempts will have you honing out a concept. If it works, keep going. If it needs to be rethought, reboot it.

Good luck! It is worth every moment of work, trust us.

Onii One Orc:

As GRNDL said, I think the beards could be a bit thinner. I started my own CDs tonight, and the beards are the hardest part! Nice thing about green stuff is that you can give it several tries until it starts to harden beyond the sculpting point. You’re going to improve with practice, and please do keep showing us your work!

Kera foehunter:

Onii i think you did great im not one of the lucky ones eather

but think as it as fun !! enjoy doing it then the more you do it it will get better

first i would do eather the armor or the beards first

you don’t have to do then all in one sitting!! take your time you don’t have to hurry

just keep this figure so in 6 months you can look back on it to see your progress

Hashut’s Blessing:

It;s a darned sight better than my first try.

A few suggestions: with the beard, do a single string at a time. Roll them thinly and make sure you have water on your tool. Don’t use too much pressure and if it starts to flatten out, use the tool to gently squish the sides towards the middle. I found it easyto “stud” the beard instead of making the lines and it comes out quite effectviely (see my avatar as an example).

As for the scale mail, I;ve not tried it yet myself :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Onii One Orc:

Hi Kera,

It was actually Ogranoth that started the thread, I was just chiming in with my own beard experience. You’re right though, practice makes perfect and I’m sure that everyone’s first sculpting attempt isn’t as brilliant as they’d like. If I get the chance, I’ll post pics of my own CDs later today, I’m working on some blunderbusses based on the BFSP thunderers.

Kera foehunter:

that why i thought the thred was oh crap

now it my turn to say it

sorry omi

First thing to always remember is that you can always peel off any GS later after it’s dry and start all over again.  So don’t ever disregard early minis.

I suggest not doing front rank models until you feel confident.

Another useful tip is to practice sculpting on blue-tack.  For anyone who doesn’t know what that is, in the UK at least its the name of a type of low-tack putty people use to stick posters on walls temporarily.  I did this a fair bit early on, just practicing beards etc.  Although I did once sculpt a whole dwarf :)  You can take as much time as you want and do it as many times as you need.

A useful thing you can do with greenstuff is to carefully slice off rounded scales etc with a sharp craft knife.  You can also file with needle files.

Ogranoth blackhammer:

i have a clay sculpting set, and i usually practice with super sculpey, but i got eager, and so it turned out the way it did. hopefully time (and many hundreds of $ worth of GS) will tell.
