CynicalFun:
Well I was planning on having a game against a chaos player, but he apparantly changed his plans and showed up at GW with his 40k stuff, so I joined a 1500 points mega battle that was going on that day. The scenario was focused on buildings, so VPs would be awarded for banners, killing generals, table quarters, and +100 for each building occupied (5 buildings on the table), even if under attack the building counted as claimed if a unit was in it.
Evil Team: Chaos Dwarfs, Dark Elves, 2 Chaos Mortals, Dwarfs
Good Team: 2 Lizardmen, 2 Wood Elves (they were allowed extra points to make up for having less players, no lords could be taken)
Anyway, my army deployed in the middle of our table side, so 90% of my game was facing one of the lizardmen players and occasionally tossing earthshaker shots towards the wood elves.
My list:
CD Hero: Armour of Gaz, GW
Sorcerror: Lvl 2, 2 Dispell Scrolls
20 Warriors, Full Command
19 Warriors, Standard + Musician (Hero went here)
14 Blunderbusses (Mage here)
15 Blunderbusses
20 Hobgoblins, LA, Shield
12 Hobgoblins
4 Bolt Thrower
Earthshaker
Pretty sure my list was under 1500, but I was ammending my 1k list in a hurry so I did not want to accidentally overspend in my haste.
Lizardmen (my main opponent’s list)
Lvl 2 Priest on Engine of the gods, Power Stones
Lvl 2 Priest on Engine of the gods, Power Stones
Chakax ,Special Character
- Not sure who was the general
14 Saurus Warriors, Spears, Standard + Musician (Chakax here)
15 Saurus Warriors, Spears, Full Command
3 Salamanders, 4 handlers each
(nice to see he took a balanced list… yeah)
The entire battle was just 5 turns, but took a long time so I will do my best to remember what happened.
Deployment: There was a building in the middle of my deployment zone, one bolt thrower garrisoned it, to its left were 2 bolt throwers and the Hero’s unit. Accross from them was the ancient stegadon and saurus. To the right were the armoured goblins and small goblin unit, behind them were the blunderbusses, warriors, then the mage’s blunderbusses, to their right was a forest where the final bolt thrower went. Accross from them was the other ancient, the saurus character’s unit and salamanders. In the middle of the field in front of me there was a building.
Turn 1:
Not much happens, I move hobgoblins full foward, inch up my other CD units. Earthshaker helps out the guy next to me by shaking WE archers, a treeman, wardancers, and the ancient steg. He moved his salamanders forward into a small swamp, obviously eyeballing my large hobgoblin unit. He attempts to shoot at my armoured hobgoblins with his salamanders, rolls 2 misfires and misses with the third, resulting in 4 dead skinks! Magic amounts to nothing.
Turn 2:
Hobgoblins inch forward some more, as do the warrior units. I put 3 wounds on one of his stegs, with my bolt throwers, the DE player next to me puts 3 more on the other one. My Earthshaker lands dead center on the treeman, but bounces off of its ward save (granted by the ancient steg’s power). His salamanders land 3 hits on my hobgoblins, which kills about half of them but they refuse to panic. Again, magic doesn’t do anything for either of us, as even with all his power dice he failed to cast or was dispelled.
Turn 3:
My shooting is ineffective, the earthshaker misfires and fails to do anything. I move my naked hobgoblins just in front of his saurus unit with the character, hoping they will take the bait and run right in front of my wizard’s blunderbuss unit. My hero’s unit moves forward, preparing to take the charge from the other saurus unit. My other hobgoblins move towards the salamanders, hoping to charge them. I suffer a mistcast on fireball, taking a wound on my sorcerror.
In his turn his ancient steg panics my warrior unit, forcing them to retreat. It then puts a few wounds on most of my units with his 2d6 range power. His saurus charge the goblins, but they retreat through the blunderbusses and put him in prime position to be shot at next turn.
Turn 4:
My earthshaker misfires again! But on the bright side I kill both stegs and one priest with my bolt throwers! My warriors rally, but the hobgoblins dont. I pump shots into his saurus unit, killing 6 but they pass their panic test. He declares charges on my hero’s unit and the wizard’s units with his saurus. My hero kills his champion in a challenge, and only lose a single warrior in the combat, he breaks, rolls a 3 for distance, and is run down (giving me a camputed banner!). The other combat doesnt fare so well for me, I suffer 3 wounds and flee, but he fails to catch me by an inch.
Turn 5:
My hero’s unit has nothing to do, my naked hobgoblins rally but my soceror’s unit does not. The DE player next to me helps me out by shooting his own bolt throwers into the flank of Chakax’s unit, killing 5. The other side surrenders since some of the younger players have to leave, plus their side is visibly losing and doesn’t have much of a chance to turn it around in half a turn.
Overall I was really pleased with how the game went, both with my end of it and overall as a team. We captured 3/5 buildings, killed a general, and had posession of 3 standards and 2 quarters. The other side had 2 buildings and 2 table quarters.
My thoughts from this battle:
I really wish I had positioned my other blunderbuss unit so that it could have shot in tandem with the sorceror’s unit, that way I could have whittled down his saurus’ units numbers down further and possibly have not been broken in combat. The naked hobgoblins worked perfectly! Best of all having them flee through my blunderbusses didnt force a panic test. If I handn’t been using my earthshaker to help out my teammate I could have softened him up some more before hitting my lines. I think he underestimated my warrior’s abilities in combat, especially their static resolution, he was kind of giving away VPs on a relatively small unit of saurus not backed up by anything.
