wallofmeat:

Hey so is this nuts?

4 bits of artillery, 2 big hobgob blocks, 3 small blunderbuss IG and a titan.

Basically shoot em all to eath and use the blunderbusses wall of lead hit everything in range rule to shotgun as they come in. The in mid and late game - fold around and crush what survived led. Basically stagger and redirect to prolong shooting.

Grimbold Blackhammer:

Unfortunately I think once anything reaches your lines, things will begin to fall apart very quickly for you. You have no higher strength attacks to deal with anything with even a reasonable amount of durability, and only one combat-effective unit - the Titan. I don’t see this as competitive, sorry =(

TheHoodedMan:

IF the BB are to be effective (it is to discuss if they have realistic Output at all) they`ll be to be in one unit to increase damage Output. Furthermore a Standard is needed to fight for objectives.

Maybe it was better to have a smaller core and a second mage/engineer instead. A scroll is mandatory from my Point of view to dispel the one game changer spell. Magic is mighty in 9th Age.

The second engineer helps your Shooting a lot. It can give his bs to the gunnery Teams, too.

Ogre slaves are much too expensive for +1 lp. This 100 Points could be invested in a rocket launcher for example. Or redirectors.

wallofmeat:

Hi,

Thanks for your useful advice.

1) I thought 4 rank (spear, horde, normal and front) attack gobs x50 were going to be better than they are - I did some maths and have no dropped the idea.

2) Ogre slaves are over costed… ther’re gone.

3) I dont often play with objectives at my club - though i’ve taken note and have added one to my new unit of backstabbers

4) I had a scroll - though im not too afraid of magic so far in my games. I have retained it.

5) second engineer = yep.

So - I’ve reworked the concept - I still want to find a way to MSU - so I have a style different from my other armies (brets n daemons) and the game plan is now :

I shoot with 2 bolt throwers, 2 mortars (one death quake for the sweet dangerous terrain test thing), 4 small squads of blunderbusses, 2xlvl1 mage engineers shootin fireballs and 1 missile launcher.

3 small goblin units, 1 orc slave unit, one backstabbers unit (commin up behind) — and then eventually the blunderbuss dwarves choke/redirect everything approaching. Kadim steps in to smash where appropriate.

This is what the list looks like (im still hoping opportunities will emerge to use ‘Wall of Lead’ - the point is I never want to charge them in my turn - I want maximum time for them to be in shooting gallery):

++ Infernal Dwarves (1993pts) ++

TheHoodedMan:

Ok, it doesn`t look so bad. The blunderbusses will do not much damage but at least you can delay your opponent a little bit.

If your war machines hit and the Titan finds a good target it can go well.

Much depends on the armies you play.

Good luck and tell us of your experiences :hat off!

Cheers THM - v99 just dropped, not alot chnged - I think I wanna see how this might work out.

TheHoodedMan:

In fact nothing changed (exception core hobgoblin costs) - and that is not really good, there were some things which could be changed to our favor.

But the advantage is one can try a little more with the existing book (which is hopefully the reason for the low changes).

JMR:

I haven’t played any 9th age, but I’m a fan of trying out an MSU approach. I’ll share a couple of things that I’ve learned that might help you, or that might be extremely obvious and useless to you…

First, you generally want small units that can still pack a bit of a punch when they charge in. For example, 12ish models deployed 6 wide with high strength or extra attacks. You have to be careful not to get your own units standing in the way of eachother. I don’t think the hobgoblins fit in here. They’re mostly good at dieing without dealing any damage back. They’re also a tad on the large side. On the other hand, you could also combine them into a unit of 40-50 to use as a backbone in your army. (They could be ranked up when the need arises to make them last longer in combat)

Having Stubborn or Unbreakable is great. I realise Stubborn is hard to get, but the Deciples of Whossname Beserkers might be worth a look.

Altough you want things to be able to deal some damage, every element should be sacrificial. I tried to keep all my units in the 125-150 points ballpark.

True redirectors are obviously great (ie. Great Eagle type of stuff). I haven’t read the rules in 9th age concerning redirections etc, but the good old hobgoblin heroes on wolves were always good to have.

I like the idea of using the Blunderbusses’ Wall of Lead. I’m tempted to swap the Hobgoblins for dwarves instead. Having tripple march sounds great (unless they changed the march rules). The Backstabbers on the other hand could be a nice disruption tool. Overall I think you’re missing some very fast, tiny redirector units. My personal preference would also be to go lighter on the artillery for a more pro-active style with more combat units, but that’s a matter of taste I suppose.

I hope any of this helps. Let us know how your army holds up on the table!

Cheers JMR

Didnt look at the diciples of Lugar much before- they look like tiny aquads of unbreakable badasses so yeah maybe something there.

Yep - i’ve added in 2 cheapo 35pt goblin cheiftans.

We still got trip march yeah.

Im going to give all this some serious though - thanks for you qual advice.
