Corlon:

Hey guys, first off great forum you have here, I’ve been reading through quite a bit of it and enjoying myself/hopefully learning.

A little background: I’m a 40k player thinking of getting back into fantasy (I played briefly several editions ago but nothing recent.) I love the look of Chaos Dwarfs and after borrowing a copy of Tamurkhan I’m pretty sure I want to start up an army.

The only things I want to stay away from are units of Hobgoblins (I’m not a big fan of the rules or any of the model options I’ve seen) and blunderbusses (I want to use the Forgeworld core which doesn’t include these and from what I can tell it’s considered one of the cheesier options?) Besides that I ideally want to field a lot of different options so I don’t end up with a boring looking/beardy army. I don’t want to gimp myself but I really want to keep it on some level "friendly."

So, this is what I’ve cooked up to give me an idea what I’d be buying and how it’d look on paper as well as maybe run a proxy game or two. I have no idea if I’m doing it right.

Sorcerer-Prophet 400pts

w/ Lvl 4 Hashut, Talisman of Preservation,

Enchanted Shield, Chalice of Blood and Darkness

This guy seems to be a pretty standard general? He’s going in the IG block so I wanted him to be protected and this list has so few units I don’t want to lose any to big spells, hence the Chalice.

Infernal Castellan 197pts

w/ BSB, Mask of the Furnace, Shield

Again, this guy seems to be the standard (groan) BSB? Also joins the big IG block.

Daemonsmith Sorcerer 120pts

w/ Lvl 1 Metal, Dispel Scroll

Babysits the warmachines, carries a scroll to ensure a really solid magic defense combined with the Chalice. I’m not 100% sure on Metal, would Death maybe be better?

38x Infernal Guard 533pts

w/ Full Command, Razor Standard

I know for sure I want a sizable core unit to sit in the middle of my battle line and look cool and the IG with HW/Shield seem to be the way to go if I’m discounting the blunderbuss. They’ll be stubborn, fear, ld10 so they should be rock solid and I felt the Razor Standard might be a good investment with this many and only str4. Not sure if I put too many guys here?

10x Infernal Guard 180pts

w/ Fireglaives, Musician

Love the Fireglaives models, I don’t expect this unit to be doing amazing things but I reckon they should be a useful thorn in my opponent’s side and I need more points in core for 2.5k than the HW/Shield unit covers.

Magma Cannon 145pts

Do I need to say anything?

Deathshrieker Rocket Launcher 100pts

I don’t want to have multiples of warmachines and this thing looks to be the 2nd best of the bunch for points value?

K’daai Destroyer 325pts

Everyone seems agreed these guys are awesome. I was thinking of using the Balrog model from LOTR and leaving off the wings, is this a good/bad idea?

TOTAL:2000pts

Daemonsmith gets Lvl. 2 +35pts

Should help him do a little more and I had exactly 35 points after adding the stuff below.

Hobgoblin Kahn 60pts

w/ Light Armour, Shield, Spear, Giant Wolf

Hobgoblin Kahn 60pts

w/ Light Armour, Shield, Spear, Giant Wolf

Again everyone seems agreed these guys are awesome for chaff/redirection and should be able to help my Destroyer find the right target. I was thinking of using the Hunter Orcs on Fell Wargs set from the Hobbit to make these. Good/bad idea?

3 Bull Centaur Renders 140pts

w/ Shields, Musician

Probably run on the opposite flank from the Destroyer + Kahns, take care of the chaff on that side and/or try and lock up a unit for a little while. I understand they aren’t very offensive but love the models and want to take a small set.

Hellcannon 205pts

A 3rd warmachine, also seems to be the 3rd best buy so now I have a pretty good set?

TOTAL:2500pts

Ok, sorry for writing a novel but I figured I’d say as much as possible so that you guys can correct as much as possible after reading. Thanks!

What lore on prophet?

Blunderbusses make keeping the big brick alot easier.

38 is a good size, as bigger is better with main brick.

10 fireglavies wont really do too much, look cool though.

Lvl 2 on a warmachine babysitter always seemed a waste to me.

khans are good for leading about. Alot better than the rare choice which can just kill itself randomly.

Bulls in a small brick with out great weapons wont do much against anything that is a real fighting block. If you plan on them having punch add a taurk. He is a must for making a brick of them actual do something.

That is my more than 2 bits.

I recently set about making myself some HG Wolf Raiders and eventually settled on the Space Wolf Fenrisian Wolves as they fit the WH scale better and are posed much more dynamically than the fell wargs. I dont know what you were planning on using but the Os & Gs Goblin Wolf Riders fit right on easily without too much messing.

Geist: I was thinking Hashut for the prophet just because it’s unique to them/this army so I feel almost obligated. Not that it doesn’t look useful too. Everything else you said seems to be what I already thought which is kinda good (I learned something reading up first I guess!) If I’m willing to accept some of that stuff to have a few models I like (Fireglaives, Bull Centaurs) does the rest of the list look solid enough? I’ll hopefully get in a game to test it out myself next week.

Skamandude: Thanks for the heads up, are those orcs on wargs too big or too small? I had been planning on just using the orcs included in the box with some bits, a couple of them don’t look too exclusively LOTR to me and it would save on cash. Shame if they aren’t the right size though, nice to know the O&G guys can fit on the Space Wolves if I decide to go that route.
