[Archive] A few questions (Thinking of starting a 40k collection)

Necrotique:

Just wondering what this model is I found while unpacking - it has written on the base-slot “Dragon Horse” - I was thinking of using it as a mount for one of my sorcerers. It looks like an old 4th edition style metal horse but with claws and a dragons tail.

Also, I’d like to start collecting 40k sometime but would like to know what the rules are like at the mo’ - as in if they’re about to be re-done/ unbalanced.
I need help also choosing an army to collect for them. I was thinking Chaos Space Marnes as I love the Chaos Warhound Titan model (okay, that’s what convinced me to start collecting 40k, I admit it) :stuck_out_tongue:
FW is also rather affordable (comparatively) at the moment, so I’d like to place a big order sooner than later.

:cheers

Necrotique:

I’m pretty set on getting a Chaos Warhound Titan for some much-needed practice of painting metallic surfaces, but would still appreciate help with with Chapter to choose, etc

:cheers

klemanius:

Can’t blame you for loving the Chaos Warhound, it really is a sexy looking kit.

40K’s rather good at the moment, theres some wining about xeno’s books being more balanced and thus underpowered (well, mostly just tyranid players) and razorback spam but otherwise its fairly good at the moment.

Rules wont change anytime soon, maybe late next year or the year after but I doubt any sooner than that and I doubt even more that it will be a bad change.

On what legion/warparty/etc to choose I say Sons of Malice!

But in all seriousness, there is a lot of choice in Chaos Marines. I’ve always been keen on the Thousands Sons myself but there really are a lot of fantastic paint schemes and in terms of background fluff its very diverse and often open ended.

If your dead set on metalics though you can’t go wrong with the Iron Warriors especially as they are obsessed with big guns and sieges to really let you go nuts with the forgeworld stuff and still keep to the background.

Necrotique:

Cheers for the help mate

Can you have more than one chapter in an army? I love the idea of Iron Warrior machinery supporting a more colourful army and the Thousand Sons really do look amazing. I’ll order tomorrow but argh - decisions, decisions!

:cheers

Iron Warriors are my chaos chapter of choice as well but bear in mind that the only pieces available for them are the warsmith and a conversion pack and the forge world tank doors and dreadnought. The rest of my Iron Warriors force consists of a sorcerer, obliterators, a rhino and a vindicator.

If you go for Iron Warriors you will probably be doing a lot of ebaying depending on how many of the original parts you actually want but if you are just going to use Iron Warrior colours then its probably not a big deal. I personally use IW torsos, heads and 2 shoulder pads on every warrior.

BeeZharr:

There’s no issue using different Legions in a Chaos Space Marine army, it’s quite common - though to make it look uniformed is a different issue, but can be done.

Fluff wise I think CSM in the 41st Millennium have been reduced to small bands through in fighting, so the average force represents an uneasy coalition of small groups drawn together by a common cause, or just hatred towards the Imperium. However, due to the nature of the warp, you can do pretty much anything - it’s plausible a section of a Legion taking part in the Great Crusade or Horus Heresy became trapped in a warp storm, only to be unleashed 10,000 years later (I’m having visions of a Luna Wolves force, in the 41st Millennium turning up, having no knowledge of their Primarch’s rebellion…).

Necrotique:

Well, I’ve made up my mind to order two Thousand dreadies, a Chaos Warhound titan and the relevant Imperial Armour book.

I think this will be a well-needed relief from painting rank upon rank of WOC :stuck_out_tongue:

I shall probably field some Iron Warrior Terminators and transports to fit in with the themes I’m going for.

Just wondering, can 40k armies field allies like Fantasy ones? As in could I have a renegade detachment as part of my larger CSM force?

Not in normal games no. Apocalypse, anything goes. Not that you can use the Titan in normal games either so... Not that fantasy allows allies either mind.

FWIW rumours talk about a new 6th edition soon. I've also heard rumblings about a Chaos Legion codex. The Current "renegades" one just sucks so bad in almost every department it makes me cry. There's a reason my sig elsewhere is: Ceterum censeo Codicem Chaotis delendam esse.
It's not unplayable mind and can be used effectively in a few ways but the fluff is just crap, the rules are so vanilla boring it's frustrating and just to spite us every other codex since (pretty much) has more interesting choices and variation. The codex unfortunately came just at the tail end of the JJ "let's simplify the death out of the hobby" movement just before 5th ed saw light and people realised trying to make a game for idiots maybe wasn't the smartest idea.

I haven't much touched 40k since 5th ed came out, the late 4th codex made CSM distasteful for me and the 5th ed rules made the way Orks played distasteful for my main 40k:er opponent so neither of us really got into 5th as such.

And for the love of the True Gods stop referring to chapters. So called loyalists of the Carrion Lord field chapters. Chaos forces are from the Legions or consists of smaller warbands of various heritage, some even renegades. Yes this is a pet peeve of mine, but you don't want to turn up at the Chaos Marine lodge talking about chapters, you'll be ridiculed by all and sundry.;):hat off

Out of curiosity, what FW book are you getting? Chaos features in quite a few what with the 3 Siege of Vraks books and now in a way with the Badab War books.

Necrotique:

For now I was thinking of getting part two of the Siege of Vraks as from what I’ve heard it has the most content.

I really just love the background for it after reading through my old codexes and WDs, and also the Horus Heresy series. Oh, and the old Titan comic in Warhammer Monthly.

I’m not too bothered by the allowances of other players as I’m fine playing either by myself against myself (is a lot less ridiculous than it sounds) or my partner, both of which have no qualms with home-brewed rules/ lists

Haha, apologies for the chapters talk - too much DOW and not enough actual gaming since a few editions back :stuck_out_tongue:

One thing - if you qualify for free shipping from FW is it express? I’m assuming so since it won’t let me pick express after 250 quid…

I'm pretty sure it's not snailmail, I went halfsies with a Swede a couple of years ago and it was shipped by UPS I see on the box. I'm guessing that qualifies as express.

The free shipping at 250 should be the best you can get though. It'd be kinda silly to offer a bad shipping option on expensive stuff. Admittedly I'm making an assumption there, always dangerous with anything GW...

nitroglysarine:

two thousand dreadnoughts? EEEEP

Necrotique:

I really like the look of the Mars Warhound, so might go with Space Marines (I know, like a sheep)
I’m assuming that, and I don’t really care what the fluff says, the Adeptus Mechanus would lend a titan to the aid of a company of Space Marines if the threat was great enough, so I’ll go with that.

:cheers

Necrotique
Not really no. "Lending" is not a concept the Imperials practice very much. It's more a question of bribing someone to help and only if they think they've got a cow of their own in the ditch (if that didn't make sense it's because it's an idiomatic expression).
Of course fluff is pretty contradictory at times. Don't paint the Titan in the Chapter Livery though. That would so wrong.;P

Necrotique:

Haha, I won’t

I’m gonna do it in sort of metallic light blue + yellows.

The Marines I do will probably be a completely different scheme. I know that they can’t lend in a conventional sense as in letting a marine pilot a titan (which is impossible since removing the connected crew may well kill them, being psychically joined to the machine spirit) but as in if they needed to if, say, the Orks were attaching one of their Foundries and the marines were there to protect the hive city nearby. The hive city being the Marines’ cow and the the Foundry being the Adeptus Machanus’ cow, so to speak :stuck_out_tongue:

Does no-one know what the dragon-horse could be? :frowning:

:cheers

Necrotique:

Just took the plunge and placed the order for a Mars pattern Warhound with Plasma Blastgun and Mega Bolter.

Really looking forward to painting it - and may or may not start collecting Imperial Guard after I check out their codex.

:cheers

Thorne:

Shame really you could have gone traitor ad mec style backed up with iron warriors that would have been very cool. I admit I look forward to seeing what happens here

Necrotique:

Hey - not saying I won’t also do that sometime later this year

I’m just open to ideas right now but couldn’t put off getting the Mars Warhound for now as I direly need practice painting metal and it should be fairly easy to try out different techniques on it.

That, and I don’t want to fork out too much money for FW models when Imperial Guard are fairly cheap at my FLGS.

Pic would help.

Canix:

Is your dragon horse this one?

I think that’s it Canix

Cheers for finding that. Always thought it might be an old Chaos piece but I guess Dark Elves makes sense too.
