In an effort to get some of my friends to do some Table top Wargamming with me I have branched out into WWII 28mm gaming. My situation is a little odd in that I will own both forces…and paint them…I’m not expecting to be playing “out” anytime soon…so with that in mind when a great deal on a lot of British and German miniatures from Renegade came along I jumped on them…as I understand it they don’t really fit well with many other ranges but I like the sculpts and the price was right so I bought them.
These are the first WWII minis that I’ve ever painted and in fact the first historical models as well so I’m looking for some constructive criticism of the color choices and the paint jobs. I’m hoping to crank out two table Top quality forces (a platoon per side) fairly quickly… I’m not terribly happy with how these turned out…but its a good start.
My first Brit Trooper:
Not real happy with his face…may need a sepia wash or something
My first Wehrmacht trooper:
Should he have collar tabs?
Are his pants too green?
How should I base these guys? on washers? If so how do you “level” out the ground…some kind of putty or filler?
Wehrmacht is Nazi Germany at the time, right? Looking good, maybe a devlian mud wash over their faces, but dont use to much. Add a swastika, if my first question is correct- But Overall looking good!
There’s plenty of uniform guides in Osprey books and online resources, so I’d check some of those out. Modern historical gaming is good fun, crossfire especially is a really good rules set. As for bases I use pennies
I have quite a lot of models, maybe about 20 painted over 3 factions. I got them so I could do Weird WW2 scenarios, but I got a bit side tracked. If you haven’t looked, go check out the Bolt Action mini range at Warlord Games. OOORRRR… Go check out the resources at Ambush Alley Games, since their Force on Force ruleset covers WW2 as well.
Thanks guys…I will be gaming with either the force on force rules that GRNDL mentioned or possible the Alternative WWII rules set…which is based on the 40k rules but modified to fit WWII…either looks good.
Yes, but from your following question I see you're not very knowledgeable on the subject.

Only few "Nazi-German" troops wore swastikas as you'll find. At least in the way we imagine it (thanks Hollywood!) and that would be visible on a <=28mm gaming model.
Only the "political" troops, the SA and the SS had those huge swastikas on the arm often associated with Nazi-Germany.
The Wermacht (that is "regular army" to you) only had the swastika as part of the Reichsadler on the uniform, but that's almost invisible on a small scale model. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_Germany
Thanks for your suggestions Clam…I have already started the next two and am incorporating the advice that I receive here and over on the Lead Adventure Forum. I will certainly make the Germans pants more gray and the jacket slightly green…also on the Tommy I screwed up the Enfield rifle…I forgot how much wood it had…and the new guy will have a tan backpack.
As My friends and I are just starting out in this I will shoot to get 2 squads on the table pretty quick…20 fig total…then build up as time…and the MM90s…allow…
Vallejo make two very useful colours for painting German uniforms. IIRC, one is German Field Gray and the other German Uniform. Use the Field Gray as a base, use Badab black to shade, retouch with Field Gray and Highlight with Uniform, you’re done!! Of course, it might be the other way around, its been awhile since I painted them.

:hat off thanks GRNDL...you know I had been trying to do this with the existing paints that I have...but I think I've lost sight of my goal...In this case I'm looking for gaming miniatures that I can crank out pretty quickly...I need to remember that these arn't my dwarfs (chaos or regular) and don't need the same level of detail. So I think I'll pick up those colors ASAP...I also see that they have a Britsh Unifrom color...so I'll get that...and maybe I'll delve a bit further into the use of washes...which haven't been my friend of late. anyway..thanks for the advice I'll keep you posted.
Looks cool. I will suggest AE-WWII by Darkson Designs as a great WWII system. You can play it Weird War or straight up historical. I have a blast with it.
Painting looking awesome.
But does the Wehrmacht look a touch like he's had an accident in the pant department? ;p

Haha...too true...the faces on these figures are not the best...and my ham hands are too used to painting the exaggerated features of dwarfs...I'm gonna have to get used to working with washes to help me with the fine features found on boring old humans...;P
Alright…well here are my next 2 attempts…I’ve tried to incorporate as many suggestions as possible…I’m much more happy with these though I think the Brit is a little on the light brown side… ::) anyway let me know what you think.
Looking good, Blue. Think the German is spot on. Yeah, the Brit should probably have been a bit more brown - but anyway I like these more dusted versions of WWII soldiers, more.
