Personally I find Warseer problematic. Its just too big! By the time you get to a thread and confirmed its not just glorified rumour mongering from the “I heard that daemons are going to get a Giant Jelly Monster from Gav Thorpecoz he’s my sister” brigade there are already seven pages of comment. It also seems to lack the “community” feel of smaller forums. Maybe I’m just biased having CDO but I’ve never been comfortablewith it. What do you guys think

Yeah, it’s much too big to be useful for much besides rumours. Also, thanks to simple statistics, there are huge numbers of complete idiots posting there.

There’s a certain % of stupid idiots in the population
on a small forum this amounts to a tiny (even down to negligible) amount of people
on a forum as large as Warseer this becomes a rather large amount

I’ve never been a member of Warseer, but it’s handy to look at the rumour roundup occasionally. And every once in a while I check out the army blogs and so on.

As for Warseer:
the 40k section is pretty overwhelming…
the fantasy section is alright…
the inquisition is over the top…
but there is no better place to find more accurate rumors on teh interwebz…

Actually, the moderating team is one of my favourite bits of Warseer. I frequent some other large forums (that have nothing to do with Warhammer) where the mods are just members of the community who got ‘promoted’, and often they’re the most divisive and argumentative posters (because they “bring the hits” or something) so they cause more harm than good. At least on Warseer they just do their jobs and enforce the rules.
But I seriously cannot cope with the sheer volume of idiots otherwise. It’s impossible to have any kind of serious conversation outside of the Modelling & Painting section, which is actually quite pleasant.

I find Warseer so bad actually, that I’ll regularly wade into some contentious debate (i.e. “Sigmar was a Primarch”, “Dark Angels are underpowered”, “Lord of the Rings should be a Specialist Game” or other such irrelevant nonsense) and then be so apprehensive about the immature, shouty replies I’m sure to receive that I won’t go back there for weeks. That’s why I’ve just bitten the bullet and stopped going there at all now. There’s a kind of ‘critical mass’ for forums, at which point the volume of posters (and, hence, barely-literate scum) just grows so large that the inmates start running the asylum.

One of the important parts of a forum I find, is the organization. Can you find what you are looking for? How long does it take? I try to set things up so that they are easier to find, and I am always willing to accept suggestions and advice on improving this.
Another thing that is important is managing the flow of threads and the amount of information. Warseer has way too many posts, meaning you could start a thread today, and it would be off page 1 by tomorrow. This never gives your thread enough time to be seen let alone replied to. A place like Warseer needs many more categories so reduce the disorganization. The Hobby section for one would do well to adopt sections not unlike CDO’s.

One of the best Warhammer forums and group of posters I have seen so far, especially in organization and friendliness.

I tend to find the best bits of Warseer (i.e. the rumours) end up on the other forums before long. Awesome painting thread, but it could have done with a bit more instruction.
After the members, the most important aspects of a forum are its layout and the mod team. Most forums suffer from either being difficult to use or poorly managed. CDO is the pinacle a far as GW forums are concerned

I like the background sections, seeing other people’s ideas (and some of the older stuff) is good, and knowing which background books might be good to buy.
I also look at the Fantasy rules section as it lets me think.

This is nick the WarSeer admin and I just wanted to make a quick post… First off thanks for your comments (I was referred here via Ghrask Dragh’s link). Your feedback is very useful…
I understand your problems with the size of WarSeer and I’ve been looking at solutions since I took over but I’ve still not found one which solves all of the issues. I really do miss being involved on portent while it was smaller, the job becomes less interesting the bigger the site gets. I’m going to discuss the feedback with my team and see what we can come up with to help.
