cornixt:
I saw an Icelandic film called Astropia (also called Dorks and Damsels). It’s about a bimbo whose boyfriend gets sent to prison so she has to fend for herself and get a job. The local sci-fi/fantasy/games store owner randomly gives her one despite her knowing nothing about the products, but she used her other talents to help out as she slowly delves into the world of RPGs. Pretty good overall. Lots of funny references, even mentions Warhammer a few times. All the characters in the RPG segments have names from well-known fantasy books, except for Playmolas - presumably the Playmobil version of Legolas, maybe he can’t be rebuilt into something else!
It was a low-budget film but had pretty good CGI elements (that I could tell from the tiny screen I saw it on while on an airplane) and the acting was very good for the most part. I was glad it wasn’t the archetypal “woman who hates geeks finds out they aren’t so bad” or “woman helps geeks with social things while geeks help woman with technical things” but more “woman works out the causes of and solutions to her problems while making friends with geeks”
