[Archive] Bayou Battles

Geist:

So another thing Bloodbeard wanted me to do was to go over Bayou Battles.

What is it?
Indy GT for Kings of War 2kpts no comp system.

Where is it?
Houston Texas.

When is it?
August 11th-12th.

Why should you give two pineapples?

First off Kings of War is the system that GW should have become but hubris made them not become.  It is a simple fun game that has a chess like feel to the moves, but rewards you for clever play.  While it is simple it is no where near easy, mastery of the Kings system requires the ability to think many moves ahead while taking into account a myriad of factors.

Secondly since it is so simple, it makes for more games easier games (no rules debates), and the biggest one MULTI BASING.  Instead of craming 50 models onto a tight movement tray each on his own base, you take a base the foot print of the unit and put a minnium number of models (usually half plus 1) models on it and bam.  You get to create scenes and looks that are just awesome.  The visuals are amazing.

Alright BloodBeard wheres my slaves?

LOL LOL

:cheers

As a primary KoW player myself I love the game but I dunno that an honest WHFB would be KoW. I think an inevitable evolution of a good balanced WHFB would be something more like Armies of Arcana (Really-really great system if you?Tre looking for something more complex and customizable then KoW).

Man I love multi-basing though, I think overall it just plain looks better and allows for a more interesting looking unit, and the minimum-model count allowance really helps cut the cost of playing (and lets be frank the high cost environment created by GW keeps tons and tons of people out of war gaming). I wish I could make it down to Texas for Bayou Battles, Oregon is unfortunately a wasteland for Kings of War beyond my own group of 6 friends (although I’ve gotten wind of an occasional meet up at a local game store). Are you going to be attending? Would love to hear some high-lights / see some photos of peoples Chaos/Abyssal Dwarves. I’m really hoping KoW picks up more in the states, and events like this are exactly what we need for that to happen.

Grimbold Blackhammer:

I really like the idea of being able to create a diorama base in KoW. That alone offers so much modeling potential! And I really like their movement system. Alas I am still much more of a 9th Age guy but KoW is a fantastic game! If you haven’t tried it, do so. Games are fast, you don’t need a wealth of tactics to get into it, and you can use your old WHFB models to play it.

Carcearion:

I’ve been meaning to give 9th age a try, I’m magnetizing my chaos dwarves so that I can use them in a whole gamut of games.

I’ve looked over the forum and rule books for 9th Age and while I don?Tt know if it?Ts for me giving how closely it resembles WHFB (I?Tve found I?Tm really enjoying simpler systems) it really looks like the fans picked up the banner and made a good balanced game based on a system they really loved, I think they really succeeded in their task of making the edition of WH that fixed the game and made everyone happy that GW never would in their quest for more money. Thinking about it I guess if any game is the game WHFB should have been, 9th age is.
