[Archive] blue highlights on a black beard?

Timothy Archer:

Hello

I’m seeking for help to paint a beard

I would like to know if someone could explain me the way

To make those cool dark blue highlights on a black beards

It seems to me that the old hat cd were painted this way

Is it just dark blue + white or is there a special trick

Thanks to all

T

Thommy H:

Depends.

If you want a rich, lustrous colour, you mix blue with your black basecoat, then add more blue for each subsequent highlight. You can do a final highlight with a touch of white to make it pop.

If you want a slightly more realistic colour, you do the same for a layer or two, then start adding white instead of blue. That gives you a result like the beard of the guy in my avatar.

Timothy Archer:

Thanks I think I go for the first choice.

You could also try using Necron Abyss ( or whatever it is called now) as the base coat and then black wash / shading

Iirc, a method I used on some of my CDs was to drybrush with a grey and then give it a blue wash.
