[Archive] ... but baby it's cold outside (question about priming)

clam:

Hi,

Can only primer my models outside/in my garage - but it freezing like hell - and had been so for nearly 2 months now, so can’t use my spray cans.

Simple question:

Anyone knows of a good method/product for brush on priming? That gives a firm, thin black layer? And if you have an advice for doing whites - let me know as well.

Heard about PVA and chaos black paint - anyone who has tried that out? It sound like something that should only be used on bases (to me).

Need some advice - have only 10 days left to do my GH-entry, you know

snowblizz:

Painted on Chaos Black.

Dunno why someone would mix glue in.

That’s what I’ve used in pinch sometimes. It’s not because everyone plays Black Templars that GW’s most sold product is Chaos Black paints after all.

And I have the same exact problem.

Though I’m told as long as the CAN is warm the temperature where you spray can be lower. So a garage at 10-15 C when the can is room-warm should work.

clam:

Plain chaos black don’t stick that well on styrene, GS, BS, resin etc. (IMO) - so I’ll have to give it several layers - which means lossing details :frowning:

And the garage is now bellow 0 C, so I’ll have to start a fire to come near 10-15 C - so I don’t think that’s an option

Btw: Don’t it chip of easy, just using Chaos Black on metal models?

Thorne:

I tend to use matt enamel based paints for undercoating so its less of a issue, After experimenting with a card board box and a fan heater atop my freezer I find I have no issues when it comes to it with sprayng accrilics the same method, Making sure you spray evenly and consistantly on the models in the garage and angling a fan heater into the spray booth box I find that the paint sets and adheres well to the models dryin and leaving a nice flat matt coat to them, All that aside the only time I ever have issues with priming paints is generaly using games workshops own expensive brand of paint. You could dtry the army painters range because its heavier on pigment and does dry a hell of a lot faster than gamesworkshops own chaos black equivalant.

Brush coating can be very hit and miss, The problem is always after you end up undercoating the model you see bits that have gunked up or even in some cases totaly missed the point. If I were to I would wash the model in dish washing detergant and then dry well and then paint over as you would normaly, This helps your paint not run on the plastic so much due to the oils that are needed for plastic injection moulded sprues.

Traditionaly I do use a matt enamel of auto primer instead as its more appropriate and designed to work at lower temperatures and gives a consistant finish, On more special models I have also used in the past Liquid Gesso as a primer, Usualy it comes in white colouring but their are many other colours that can be obtained, Mostly it is used in making canvases ready to paint upon but it is also a nice medium for painting too as it leaves a sligth key to the whole model you are painting, A great alternative medium and little does indeed go a long way.

clam:

Liquid Gesso ?? - hmm! after a google-search it seems to be what I’m after - even do a black one as well. Now I’ll try find it here i Europe. Might eBay be my friend once again?

Alric:

I use skull white paint mixed with some water to thin it down , it drys fast so I brush on 2 coats of primer to get a good cover. I avoid any uneven spots by dusting each coat on , almost dry brushing the paint on.

clam
It doesn't? I've never had to use many layers and loose detail. I has always worked OK for me. I only spray because it is faster really.

In my experience there's no difference in durability between Chaos Black painted on or primed with GW's spray. Both will chip as easily.

This guy uses painted on undercoat.

GRNDL:

Uhm… how about spraying indoors? Open a window, get a fan going for 30mins in an old room/garage…

Or

Go to a model shop about buy some acrylic brush-on primer… Tamiya make it, so do Model Master, Gunze Sangyo too I believe.

Bassman:

I primed ALL my miniatures using a brush! Chaos black over green stuff, plastic, metals, whatever I used and found any problem. I just water a little bit chaos black as I do not want to loose details and add a thin additional layer in case I left some parts naked.
It’s just because of my special priming techinique that I spray, over black, the white GW primer… but you can skip this part if you usually prime black and nothing else…

I use PVA glue and chaos black only on styrene foam (aka bases and my blunderbusses unit filler) because I want to add a smooth texture over styrene foam. I do not suggest it over an over detailed miniature…

clam:

Thanks guys - think I’ll try and do a test using ordinary Chaos Black - and see how it turns out. If not … Gesso then!

Kera foehunter:

Do what i do put the fan on in the bathroom and spray them !!

or spay them in the garage and bring them in to dry

Joshmohr:

Get a BIG cardboard box, prime them in that.
