[Archive] (Byzantine) Empire

Grimstonefire:

Presuming those are mantic bases, why did you not just turn them upside down?

Nice work btw.

Willmark:

Think about some Varangian Guard too. There is no historical record one way or the other, might make good great swords.

Golder Goldeater:

Constantine XI should be rembered along with the 12 Worthies.

Willmark
Aren't they only 9? Hector, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Joshua, David, Maccabeus,King Arthur, Charlemagne and Godfrey of Bouillon?

Willmark:

Waves hand in a Jedi like way

"9 worthies is what I said".

Shef:

depending on the period the Varangian Guard was made up of vikings that were settling russia and then later (and my fav part) Saxon hurscarls that fled england after William got there. other then them i can’t think of a single unit.

Bassman:

Byzantine empire? Frikkin’ cool theme. I did an extra exam in my degree on Middle Age history of Art only to study a little bit more of Byzantine story.

I love the idea they still claim themselves to be the “true” romans (Romanoi) 1000 years after the fall of Roman empire

Golder Goldeater:

Bassman
Well, the empire was devided to Western Roman Empire and Eastern Roman Empire and that happened before the fall of the Western Empire.
The Eastern one survived and evolved into what is now called "Byzantium"
("Byzantium" is a hostorical term. The Byzantines called themselves "Rhōmaioi"(romans) and their kingdom Rhōmanía)

So technically, they were "true" Romans.

Bassman:

So technically, they were "true" Romans.

Golder Goldeater
and they spoke.... greek! :-D

I'm so in love with middle age that I appreciate all these contraddictions.

But what happened to your army? no updates?

Golder Goldeater:

Yeah, I’ve been kinda busy lately.
Anyway, here is another cataphract;

And before you can say anything about the horse barding, let me inform you that although the cataphracts of the antiquity used full metal horse barding, after the 7th century A.C., the Cataphracts would use barding made out of padded or leather armor. (The few remaining cataphracts to keep using metal barding were dubbed clibanophoroi)

rpitts2004:

I have a question Goldo, are you going to sculpt everything without casting new models?

Golder Goldeater:

Maybe. Won’t be he first time. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

AGPO:

This is a truly wonderful army! I’ve never come across 28mm Byzantines anywhere before, which is strange as they’re fascinating both from a historical and modelling perspective. Have you given any thought to casting these?

Golder Goldeater:

UPDATE EVERYBODY!

I finally started painting the emperor! Here is a wip pic!

Please tell me what you think!

Have you given any thought to casting these?

AGPO
I have. If you are interested to order any of my minis you could speak with Zirrian here;

Willmark:

I like it but it needs to have more purple in the cloak, or at least it needs to be smoother. Otherwise it’s looking good.

Bad Gram Northern:

Admiral:
