[Archive] Calling all Armourers!

Grimbold Blackhammer:

This is a very fun thread!

I remember there’s some blacksmith/armourer giving classes back home and I’m resisting the urge to go there and ask “so, I’d like a peascod cuirass, think you can do one?”.

Oh yeah, the last year in high-school we had this sportsday and we went to ride. I looked at them and said “only way I’m getting on that horse is if you bring me a plate armour to wear first, now take those boots and that silly helmet thing a git!”. If I’m gonna look like an idiot, I’m doing it in historically correct!

One of these days I’ll commission a full cuirassiers outfit. Not sure what to do for a horse though…

Kera foehunter:

to bad about the bow :frowning: You need to add hoove glue and sinew) and go up and down the Bow from your handel to the tip Fiberglass would work as well . or use more of a gnarly tree.

Snowblizz: I’m actually working on a Churburg globose breastplate, and a pig-nose bascinet right now. The Bascinet is taking forever, and has been scrapped a few times (earlier in the thread I showed what looked to be a steel sombrero - that was one of the initial raising attempts for the bascinet. I’m on the third try now.

Kera: The bows are layered lood and fibreglass - they’re incredibly strong. The only problem we are having is since we are attempting to build it in sections, you don’t get a smooth flex to the entire length of the bow. If you look at the picture, you can see that the centrepiece doesn’t flex at all, which puts massive, massive pressure on each “leg”.

Also, for those interested:  These pictures were taken by a friend of mine a couple months ago on his visit to England.

Cool stuff! More updates please, it’s a pleasure to read this thread. If one day you’ll come to Italy pm me. I’ll take to some cool places to see our middle age and Renaissance armour galleries!

Taurian:

This is a very interesting post, I had not seen it before.  It’s that kind of thing I wouldn’t mind trying out at some point.

BTW, I had to laugh a little when I read this:

…I don’t know about Canada but it is really hard to find forge tools etc at a reasonable price in South Australia…

Yeah, it’s almost as if the officials in Australia are afraid of what someone might try to make.  I wonder why?
