Greetings followers of Hashut. I have a question about the hellcannon: can it pivot before fireing? I understand both sides of the argument:
1) it is a monster so it can’t pivot before fireing because any movement negates the shot.
And the counter argument is:
2) the cannon is fired as per the rules for a stone thrower that in turn follows the rules for warmachines while it fires so it gets a free pivot as per the warmachine rules.
I’ve always used the second argument. How do you all play it?
It can't move before firing. Been FAQed. It's primarily a monster.
So setup is crucial. Puy the hellcannon on the table last, in a corner and in a 45° angle - to be sure to fire.

Yeah i feel that but the faq supports both trains of thought:
as per the faq:
Q: Does pivoting on the spot count as movement for the purposes of
units, other than war machines, with the Move or Fire rule?(p73)
A: Yes.
But also it says:
Page 109 ?" Shooting with War Machines.
Change ?oUnless specified otherwise, all war machine
weapons?? to ?oUnless specified otherwise, all weapons in this
section (and all other weapons mounted on war machines)??
The second faq section refers to the stonethrower portion of the hellcannon so it takes it's rules from the warmachine section when it fires the stonethrower because the stonethrower is a warmachine.
Am i just looking at the faq in the wrong way? Does it really back up both schools of thought?
Think I read somewhere in a dark tome of forbidden knowledge (or one of countless forums I search for an answer), that it’s only the firing part. A watmachine can’t fire if it moves. And a monsters counts as moving when it pivots.
My interpretation is that you are ok to pivot in the shooting phase then shoot. The hellcannon shoots like a stonethrower (a warmachine). The ability to take a pivot in the shooting phase before shooting is part of the rules for “shooting a warmachine”. If it shoots like a warmachine, then it must follow the rules for “shooting a warmachine”, which includes the free pivot in the shooting phase.
