[Archive] Carcearion's Warhost of Karagazkar [Chaos Dwarf Temple WIP 1/5/2018]

Carcearion:

Ok then, starting work on my next squad of chaos dwarf warriors, their demon and summoner, and my long unphotographed rocket launchers.

Here is my slightly modified demon summoner holding his evil demon holding jar and the next demon I will be using (another Reaper bones miniature).

Him and the rest of his squad

My rockets, I know tons of people here have made these out of the Empire Rockets but I think I did a fairly decent job with them. I also plan on filling them with a pile of skulls below the alter-ish lightning bolt icon.

It feels a little odd doing an update without any finished models to show, but on the other hand finishing assembly does feel a bit like progress (particularly so on the Rocket Launchers, even though technically i finished those weeks ago). On my next update I promise some finished miniatures! I’m being hampered right now doing a conversion/painting commission for a co-worker of mine who will soon be moving away, so that has put a fair bit of pressure on, I’m doing a Horde of Revenants for him made from KoW Basiliian Paladin Footmen and Warhammer Fantasy Skeletons. Once I’ve completed those I will have officially done more work on his undead army then my own chaos dwarves x.x having also done a Horde of Skeletons, a Lich, a custom conversion Lich, and an big impressive flying Arch-Lich.

Malorndk:

Ahaha those Rocket Batteries are quite cool! I love the lightning icons <3

Jackswift:

Nice job on the Rockets. Love the use of the gears for the wheels. What did the cart boxes come from? Your second summoned “mastiff” will fit well given the style of the previous one. Looking forward to seeing the model painted.

Murkwood:

Love the Jar summoner! Great rockets. Wish I had the patience and skill to build my own war engines.

Abecedar:

Ditto. Good creative work

Carcearion:

@everyone: Thanks so much! I’m really quite happy with them and with the addition of a pile of skulls they should soon be complete. I spent ages looking for something to place between the rockets (bull idols, standing stones, goblin slaves) and I’m glad it all worked out in the end with the lightning bolts.  :)

@jackswift: I hope she turns out as well as my last demonic lady, I’m a little worried she will fall flat though since she just dosent have as much going on with her. As for the cart boxes they where just simple clear plastic generic craft containers I got from a bulk plastic goods store, I very carefully sawed and sanded them (and swore and tossed allot of cracked plastic in the trash) until they where uniform enough to hide the blemishes with cool bits. The stuff is pretty flimsy but once I realized it behaves allot like glass I started making progress.

Thanks again everyone, hope to put out another update if not this weekend then next (I really need to finish my first demon mortar!). :hat off

Carcearion:

Alright so… as I complained elsewhere on the forum I have been pretty swamped with real life getting in the way of gathering my war-host. Road trip, preparing for my wedding next month, jury duty, covering overtime shifts at work and all that stuff. I did manage to get my contest entry in for the golden hat and I’ve got my fingers crossed. I felt like I’ve been neglecting the blog though (especially after promising completed models like two weeks ago) and buckled down and at least finished a set of miniatures.

I have another magic jar bearer and his accompanying hot demon babe… get it, hot :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m really quite happy with how they turned out over-all, especially her wings! Jackswift’s earlier comment about it the technique looking like molten steel really made me think more about where it would be cooling and hardening and I think she is actually an improvement over the original.

The summoner himself I like but I don’t know if im totally satisfied with him, I feel like his curly mustache means he deserves another go at the eyes to give him a more animated expression. On the other hand I have another one of these heads so maybe he is fine how he is.

I’d love to know what you guys think, I have an awful long way yet to go. I still need to get painting my war machines, and I now have six FW Bull Centaurs to figure out (man they are huge! I can see why everyone is so unsure about them, I’m wondering if shouldn’t have waited for the lost kingdom one’s). Also I think I need to stop using that white felt for background pictures, I don’t think my camera likes its weird pseudo-reflective quality.

Hope this particular daemon-babe was worth the look, and that I can start updating regularly in late september after my wedding / honeymoon.

:cheers

TheHoodedMan:

That glowing multiarmed babe is really well done :hat off. For me it would have been already sufficient without the smoke.

Is the sand on the bases unpainted? I would recommend to paint it. The paint fixes it so that you have the sand effect for a long time. And for me it looks better, too. one GW method is to paint it with a dark brown (Dryad bark) and drybrush with Ushabti Bone (dark white). But it would work with grey colors, too.

Jackswift:

Nice job on the second model! Another success with the molten steel look. The models are going to look ace in a unit. Model is great as is so take the next two comments with the appropriate grains of salt … :cheers …the right leg could benefit from some hotter spots around the knee and ankle joints. Those might be hotter more molten to allow for more movement. And behind the right leg between it and the fabric where white yellow hot turns to cool looks like a very sudden transition.

As is you should be very pleased with the result :hat off

Carcearion:

Thanks you guys! I’m really quite happy with her but you’ve shown me some good places for improvement :hat off

@Jackswift: That is a really good idea, and something I will defiantly think more about when I’m doing this technique, I wasn’t really thinking about the joints and movement of it and I think paying some more attention to that will make them look more animated and complex. As to the harsh transition to be totally honest I think I just completely overlooked that part when I was doing my orange/red layers x.x

@TheHoodedMan I’m actually using Vallejo crackle medium mixed with Tallern Sand and some ivory colored bulk paint, with a Nulin Oil, Serephim Sepia, Water mix washed over it. I’ve been thinking it might need some dry brushing to highlight the cracks a bit better (Ushabi bones sounds like the way to go), but im still kind of experimenting with the crackle paint. I think I’ll do a blog post update about my new basing stuff at a later date so I can give people a better look at it and figure it out from there. I defiantly need to work on it though, I was trying to go more for a cracked earth effect rather then sand.

Malorndk:

I like your bases a whole lot. That is definitely something different from the norm <3

Admiral:

Good work on the summoner and the incubus. These Daemonic spirits let out of their vases gives your army a unique look, and to its advantage. Keep it up!

Fuggit Khan:

I like your bases a whole lot. That is definitely something different from the norm <3

Malorndk
Yeah, I like the bases too. And I'm still a huge fan of the bound "genie out of the bottle" idea. It's clever, fun and fluff-wise pretty cool :)

Carcearion:

Hey everyone! So the time has come to go on ahead and post up my Golden Hat entry front line. While I’m really quite happy with the models in person, but being a bit on the competitive side I’m certainly disappointed with how low I placed in the contest (tieing for 6th place). I have an awful lot going on right now in my real life which put the rush on these guys, and I think it definitely hurt my entry in more ways then one. But I think I have a solid idea on what I need to improve on, and these contests are a ton of fun to enter win or loose.  :cheers

This shot really shows off my giant lightning bolt standard which turned out much better then I expected.

my favorite model in the whole piece turner out to be the bag piper (Chaos Dwarfy Name Pending), his tiny furious pupil another happy mistake.  :D

Congratulations are of course due to all the Golden Hats winners! We had a really great showing for this one and competition felt really fierce from where I was sitting.

I think something that I really need to work on (especially for contest entries!) is making sure I’m taking decent photo’s, step one like I mentioned earlier not using that reflective plastic white felt. I’ve poked around and I’m thinking I’ll be able to make some big leaps on this soon. and assuming I can make the kind of drastic improvements I’m hoping to, after doing some touch ups I might even go through and re-shoot allot of the finished models I’ve already posted here.

In other news after a sudden invitation at my local game store, and having heard it mentioned many times on the forum I took my Chaos Dwarves and joined a Frostgrave league. Had allot of fun with my first game, my burgeoning Chaos Dwarf Warband weathered a sewer scouring flood in the underctiy, and slaughtered a band of undead warriors while stealing a great deal of treasure (Thanks primarily to the enemy Necromancer and his Apprentice being fried constantly by their own spells, due to a combination of very bad rolls and some risky hp into spell power decisions made by my opponent early in the game). I’m looking forward to trying to claim a sizable chunk of the frozen cities mysteries and riches in the name of the Dawi Zharr!

With my wedding coming up next weekend, and then my honeymoon starting the weekend after that I expect I might not get an a whole lot done anytime soon, but I tend to be able to sneak in hobby time during my work week so who knows? As usual I hope the blog update was worth a look and I’m always curious to know what people think  :hat off

Abecedar:

They are pretty good. what let you down a bit was the base edges.

And is it just me, or are they on 25mm bases?

Malorndk:

I like them. Keep it up

Jackswift:

A very nice unit overall. I concur re the base edges, undoubtedly a result of your rush, but tends to draw the eye. A neat base edge keeps the eye on the model where it should be. Nice job on the bagpiper too! These will make a great addition to your growing army.

Admiral:

A solid start, and if you improve upon it, that front rank will look even better. The lightning icon looks devilishly simple among the ostentatious big hats, which gives a striking contrast and quite good look to the unit. Well done!

Darkmeer:

I like them, and I like that command group as well. Where is the lightning bolt from? I really like it and it fits Chaos Dwarves very well!

I agree the basing is different (in a good way!) than the norm. Are they based on 25mm bases?

Bloodbeard:

Very nice entry Carcerion!

Frostgrave you say. Let me know what warband you took made of Chaos Dwarfs. It’s a brilliant game!
