[Archive] CD compared to dwarfs

sandpeople:

Wrote this in the Off topic since I could not find a better place.

I read through the dwarfs army book last night, and I was just wondering what you guys think regarding hiw it compares to our amry book. Thier whole army can get hatred, thier lords can be next to invincable, shileld wall an so on.

The most interesting thing to compare is infernal guard to their core and ironsworn to thier special.

Any thoughts?

My thoughts are: that their army list represents their whole civilisation, whereas ours is representative of a backwater fortress, far from our cultural centre, populated by a weird warrior lodge.

shrugs It’s much better than having no army book at all, and we are still able to be competitive, with a vicious Lore and some great monsters, Heroes and machinery.

Stoke the fires.

I play many armies the current Dwarf army included. I’ve only played two games with them so far since the new rules release, so I don’t know if my voice is the best for this discussion but here goes anyway.

Core
I’ll start this by saying all units in the dwarf core are armed with Heavy Armour.

Warrior
While compared to the chaos dwarfs the regular dwarf their troop core choices are lacking the hit ours do. The warrior while cheaper than our basic chaos dwarf they are lacking in several qualities: first the armour save while a base dwarf warrior is 9 points he must pay to get a shield to use with the shield wall rule. Second the stats at WS4 and Str 3 we hit each other on 4’s but he wounds us on 5’s, if they take great weapons they wound us on 3’s however they lose the ability to use shield wall their best defensive ability and reducing their armour save to 6+ with no parry, while ours in this situation is 5+ with a parry.
Quarliers/Thunderers
Both units are far better than our option for range infantry in cost, strength, and range. The crossbow while it doesn’t have armour piercing like the dwarf handgun or either of our choices it can be given armour piercing simply by putting a rune smith in the unit and a 30" str 4 AP shot normally isn’t in most armies. On top of that they can be kitted out to be armed like the regular dwarf warrior with options for both shield and great weapon.
Long Beards
Here is the elite of their core. At the same base cost as our chaos dwarfs these guys don’t come with a shield with their base cost. So what do they have that we don’t at this point, Immune to Phycology, Weapon Skill 5, and free panic test rerolls to units within 6". After getting a shield these guys can cover the flanks of the army pretty well 4+ armour with shield wall without a character a unit of longbeards can hit pretty hard where core units are concerned. With options for shields and great weapons just like dwarf warriors, but the additional option to take a 50 pts of runic banners can open the ability of this unit up (vanguard, stubborn, etc) the list can go on and on. These and the Ironbreakers are the units closest to our base Chaos dwarf.

This so far is my view of the core of the dwarf army so far. While I didn’t cover their Special rules, characters ,special, or rare. I think I did cover their core rather well. The one point I would like to point out about their special rules at this point is that they don’t have hatred toward our hobgoblins in this edition unless they roll well on their hatred table at the start of the game. That is good news for me because I like to use multiple units of hobgoblins in my army.

Yeah! But we could maybe be grateful for the fringe army list of Azgorh rather than a full-blown one for Zharr-Naggrund. This way GW/FW may come up with more ideas for the mysterious capital than if they had attempted it all at once. I'm sure we'll get a full-blown army list eventually, including ordinary Chaos Dwarf warriors.

Admiral
That is some seriously wishful thinking. Its more like, be glad you have any official list at all. It will be a miracle if FW updates the LoA list in the next edition. Maybe we will see some army wide special rules along the lines of Hatred or Shield Wall when the new edition is released.

Yes the dwarves in the new dwarf book are better than ours for the price, but they also don't have a magic phase, no cavalry, and no monsters. I would say the artillery battle is fairly even.

Admiral:

FW is bound to return to Warhammer Forge once the Horus Heresy goldrush is over. Chaos Dwarfs have become their own army, and it wouldn’t be strange in the least if they returned to it once or several times with new releases, rules and background. Something of a full army list isn’t unlikely in the long run so long as Forgeworld’s Chaos Dwarf range continues to be succesful and so long as some of their sculptors like to work on it.

That reasoning doesn’t seem like seriously wishful thinking. :stuck_out_tongue:

Whether a return to CDs happens early in 9th or in later editions is pretty irrelevant, but I agree it would be nice though unlikely with a list update for LoA come 9th edition!
