It sure is a nice weapon, if one knows what it does. But I think it will be hard to translate into miniature without looking just like a short blunderbuss or a pistol with a ridiculously large muzzle.
Its a primitive grenade launcher, with an affection for blowing up it wielder. Your rational is the one I had, hence why I suggested it as the basis for a hypothetical character’s weapon. Then you’d give it a description and some rules appropriate to the “level” or point value of the character.
If I had to make up rules, I’d say its a small template with stats that are otherwise identical to the blunderbuss.
As far as modeling it goes, its mostly a problem with GW’s aesthetic of exagerated size. Differentiating it is a matter of where the flared cone portion is. On a blunderbuss, its on the end. On a hand mortar I’d place it towards the back or middle with the larger barrel continuing beyond it.
Kinda like I’ve drawn. 40k has tons of different variations of guns. Distinguishing these two wouldn’t be hard, especially if one were for a character and was more ornate.
I believe the Empire already uses such a gun. It’s an upgrade for an engineer or possibly the outrider champion. It’s called a ‘grenade launching blunderbuss’, has a str 6 hit over a range of 16". It also has Armor piercing and is a move or fire weapon. (see p.47 Empire army book)
