[Archive] Chaos Dwarf Warrior Sculpt

Skalfgrimm:

Hey guys, I am new around these boards and am quite impressed by the enthusiasm and engagement around here.

I am currently working on a chaos dwarf warrior sculpt and clam invited me over here to post some pictures.

This is the WIP status as of now:

I´d love to get some feedback from you guys, especially concerning the following:

- the shield: Rather a round shield or other shapes? What kind of design would you like to see on the shield? Should he have a shield at all, or rather a second weapon?

- the helmet: should he only wear a mask, or should the mask be part of an helmet, I am thinking of a blend between big hats and masks here. Or something else (horns?)

- What would be fitting trinkets to put on his belt? I am not that familiar with CD lore or their imagery, so any input is welcome.

- should he wear gloves?

Please let me know what you think, I´d appreciate it.

Greetz, Skalfgrimm

I think a round shield with spikes on would be nice. The thing you used could just be trimed down a little. On the shield you can’t go wrong with a skull or lightning (or a skull with a lightning split), both are typical CD symbols.

    - the helmet: should he only wear a mask, or should the mask be part of an helmet, I am thinking of a blend between big hats and masks here. Or something else (horns?)

The helmet is looking nice already, but I’d be tempted to extend the bottom of it over the beard a little. It may not need more details if he is only a warrior.

    - What would be fitting trinkets to put on his belt? I am not that familiar with CD lore or their imagery, so any input is welcome.

Hmm… Less is more, but some sort of torture device or long thin metal spikes could be good. Check out the hellcannon crew.

    - should he wear gloves

Only if you find them easier to sculpt.

Bolg:

Yes a round shield please (: (extra weapon is not a real dwarfish weapon option I thought)

I would prefer a helmet w mask and some horns on the helmet would be great.

I agree with grim, not to much fuzzy extra details on the belt but a pouch of a extra (simple) dagger is good.

I like gloves and he is already in full armour (so no skin) make em nice and big (:

Its all just my opinion but I hope it helped.

(whats going to happen to the model once finished?)

Willmark:

Skalfgrimm-

Don’t let these guys be overly critical, by the look of it you are off to an excellent start so keep it up. Good job with the axe as well.

I like the helm, all that is missing is a bit of ornamentation to liven it up a bit, great job none the less.

Snotling:

You realy started a good sculpt, but if you ask for my personal opinion, I’ll give you my opinion

For CDs, I prefer more rectagular shapes. with the symbols Grim metioned, Lightnigs, the rune of Hashut, skulls, bull heads… and cool rivets ^^ but you can also keep them round with spikes.

mask are what fashionable CDs wear today. But a mask with a helmet would be awesome, gives your dwarf more character.

For the belt, yes is more, but give him just something… a small bag, a twisted tool, a torture device. The Hellcanon crew is a good reference for that.

The wussy normal dwarfs have bare hands… WE wear gloves, makes our dwarfs looking more hardcore

Its a cool sculpt, can’t see it finished, looks good so far!:hat off

Keep it up!!

Bassman:

Great sculpt here.

My suggestions:

Being not a great fan of mask take my suggestions with a grain of salt. Now it look more a skull than a mask. He needs something on top and sides to beef it up. I’d like to see a mini hat on top, like a small plain cilinder. Something like dwarf ironbreakers.

http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/warhammeronline/images/thumb/1/11/Ironbreaker2.jpg/250px-Ironbreaker2.jpg

He needs shoulder pads, because of heavy armor and because they are cool!

I like round and simple shields (so I can play with painting). Maybe add some rivits…

clam:

First, glad that I could convince you to post over here. (Skalfgrimm posted some awesome Ironbreakers at TFM - and said he was tempted doing some CDs as well - http://trollsforge.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=wip&action=display&thread=1196&page=1 - so I thought I might ‘guide’ him a bit ;))

Like I’ve already said it’s all about finding the style you like. Yes it’s nice with some advice where to go - but it’s all about being happy abort what you are doing.

And then about this one. Agree with Grim, the helmet should come a bit more out over the beard. Regarding style - I would personally like a helmet in line with the one you already done - with a bit more definition and maybe som ornaments, but should you decide for a more classic big hat look - you might find these interesting (I prefer these to the extrem GW 5th ed hats):

WarplockM:

GeOrc:

If you should decide casting a few of these I would recommend doing a optional right hand - a shield one and one with an additional hand weapon (read: similar axe). And the shield should be big and round

And think Bassmanis right - shoulderpads to protect those bare arms is something to consider.

But all-in-all a very great first try at a CD.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

Looks excellent so far. I can’t wait to see how he looks in finished and painted form. Are you going to make a unit of these guys from Green stuff, or just resin cast a bunch.

Skalfgrimm:

Thanks alot for all the input! I took way too much time out of my day to read up on the “Word of Hashut”… seriously, I am in awe. The amounts of enthusiasm, work and talent that obviously goes into those issues is fantastic.

Consider me a new reader :cheers

As for the sculpt, so far I updated the mask:

Still not done, but I´ll have to let it cure first…

I am currently working on the arms…

I would like to do about 3 or 4 different warriors, with the same overall look, but different poses and details. I imagine that a unit of such models would look quite nice on the table.

If I am happy with the sculpt, it will be cast in metal, either by Troll Forged (if they want them that is), or I´ll commission a German company to cast them for me.

Which reminds me: I am currently building more armatures, so if you guys have ideas for poses let me know. I personally love the shield wall, ranks of armored dwarf, standing firm and confident in their martial prowess.

But that might result in quite a static looking unit, so let me know what you guys have in mind.

Hazkar:

uhh,thats a nice one

the helmet looks better right now…but it would be cool if you could do it a little bit more big hat style(like the pics clam posted)

for the belt maybe some rivets, nothing to fancy

not sure about the gloves, maybe do some wristbands…with a chain that connects the wristband with the axe(would look amazing)

what to do with the shield?i would also do some rivets on the brink and a cd symbol(like the skull with lightning or the rune of hashut or something like that)in the centre

a cape would also look cool(just think about it;))

hope that will help you

clam:

Much better mask, now - maybe the detail/ornaments should be just a bit more sharp.

Mass-produced Chaos Dwarfs - what an interesting thought

I’d recommend the shield wall too. That would look great. Not every Chaos Dwarf miniature have to be a super hero one it’s own. So the variation should/could be their type of armoury (one plated, one with scales and a third with dragon scales etc) and their weaponry (different types of axes, maces, flails etc). Some could have their axe high, some low. And then maybe a few different shield designs to break it up a bit.

- and always keep in mind that who they will rank.

After that - you could always look into doing a command group - and do a dynamic super hero

Skalfgrimm:

@ Hazkar: I like the wristband idea. A cape would seem a bit much for a regular warrior, I think.

AuYerdem habe ich schon die Rüstung am Rücken modelliert und echt keine Lust das komplett zu verdecken. Aber das bleibt unter uns

@ clam: Yeah, that is what I have in mind, too.

A quick update:

I started with the rough shape of the helmet, the arms got some love and I added suds to the belt. Most time however went into the shield emblem.

It is not yet fixed to the shield, and if you guys are interested, I could cast some resin copies you can use for your own conversions and scratchbuilds.

Greetz, Skalfgrimm

Bassman:

That was exactly what I mean! Great helmet.

Good idea with the shield emblem. I’d get it separated from the shield, as you said it could be a nice “optional” piece.

clam:

Now, just add some details (trims, rivets, small ornament (arrow, skull or …)) - and it’s perfect

Now, go to bed and get some sleep

Skalfgrimm:

Thanks guys, I am glad you like my work so far.

Today I had not as much time for this stunty as I had hoped to have, so there is only little progress.

I added a trim to the helmet (need to shave that done more cleanly though) and half a shoe. I also sculpted the wood onto the back of his shield.

I hope to get more done tomorrow.

Greetz, Skalfgrimm

Zanko:

Oh man! You make here a really cool guy!

The helmet is ace! To see the progress is very interesting :cheers - if only I would have such an ability to create such amazing stuff … :frowning:

Go on and inspire us with your work! :hat off

                      :hashut

Hazkar:

awesome…pure and simply awesome

thats what a modern cd should look

cant wait to see the finished mini/unit

clam:

It’s 08.00 a.m. CET and no updata? - you lazy sod

No just kidding. Glad to finally see that you can sleep - and teh project didn’t get to you.

Shield looking great - I love the wood work. Think the helmet trim should have some small round rivets - and then leave it as is. Or perhaps add some small arrows comming down from the trim. That would look awesome.

Loki:

Great GS work on the model, really like the wood effect on the shield

Borador:

Holy cow(god ;D)

nice sculpting! Wish my lines were that clean :open_mouth:

keep it coming! looking great already =]
