From memory, I think the Ogres came from the East, but had to flee after some Tunguska-style meteoroid collided with the Earth and basically nuked their homeland (this Meteoroid left a hole in the ground that mutated into the Great Maw. Literally a big mouth in the surface of the world, sort of like in Star Wars but on a bigger scale).
After that the Ogres migrated west into the mountains that border the Dark Lands and settled into tribal groups. The largest of these is ruled by Greasus Goldtooth, who is basically a Mafia Don with a gut plate.
The Ogre Kingdoms book, from memory, leaves the distinct impression that Ogres don’t have much in the way of a sense of unity.
Maybe that’s why some of them succumb to Chaos or leave to fight in mercenary bands.

it didn't so much mutate, The ogre culture is described as being oriented around eating, and as such, most ogres sport large guts and they worship a god known as the Great Maw. It appears to be a vast creature that was released from a comet intended to destroy the Ogre Kingdoms near Cathay, the Warhammer Fantasy equivalent of Imperial China. It ate many of the inhabitants of the Ogre Kingdoms and is said to have passed through the centre of the world (it appears that another Great Maw exists in the sea on the other side of the world, in the form of a giant whirlpool that sucks in passing ships). The ogres venerate and fear it in equal measure. The priests of the Great Maw, known as Butchers and Slaughtermasters, also fulfill the roles of cooks for their respective tribes and supervise their religious holidays, which consist (mainly, and some times solely) of gigantic banquets and pit fights.
I am pretty sure there is some old fluff about halflings and ogres both being one of the last races engineered by the Old Ones, both being specifically designed to be resistant to the effects of Chaos, hence their links through a shared heritage.
A mate of mine did some excellent background stuff for a Runequest RPG where you could play a halfman (equivalent to a hobbit) or a twiceperson (equivalent to an ogre).
Ogres worship and fear the Great Maw. They believe that buy eating everything, just as the the Great Maw ate them, they will gain power over their enemies… Think Old school cannibals. They believe that by eating the enemy, they gain the energy or power of the enemies souls. Or Aztecs… They believed that by eating the heart of the enemy, they would gain his power. In essence the very same thing that nearly ended their existance is now the thing that drives them forward to devour their enemies.

As far as i recall it was only halflings as halflings are completely incorruptible by chaos. There are no chaos halflings at all in the warhammer world - anyonbe that makes chaos halfling models does not know the fluff at all. Chaos Ogres exist, so much for incorruptibility in them!

Give an ogre a halfling to eat and he'll eat for a day, give him a halfling cook and he'll eat for a lifetime.
That's right cornixt, there was another reason also, some sort of kindred spirit, I think it was to do with the wandering nature of both species, I can't remember exactly.
To WFB as a whole, what would people suggest taking in a CD army as far as Ogre Allies are concerned? I'd imagine a beefy unit of leadbelchers would be damned nice and actually work in an impressive way with the CD's as a whole. Thoughts appreciated here.
Halflings and ogres were the last two races designed, but halflings were only half finished when the Old Ones left, hence their short stature, immature behaviour and child-like appearance. The ogres and halflings share the large appetite and I forget something else they have in common. Ogres like halflings because of this shared connection in gastronomy and race-birth, hence why they keep gnoblars as pets (it reminds their primeval brain-section of halflings), but when they meet a real halfling, their stomach tells them just how tasty they are and their mind and gut comes into conflict between taste and “love”.
As for the Maw, it’s a large chunk of Warpstone (I believe from Morrsliebb) that fell. Hence the mutation in Ogres (or were more susceptible to Chaos than the halflings, but were stronger as a result) and why so many die when they go to it and so many return mad if they survive.
Also, can we try to steer back on topic now, please?
I’m fine with the focus of the fluff its the models that I object to. At least the Chaos Ogres look like ogres, the current range looks like a bunch of frat boys who happen to be ten feet tall, the fat guts are about right…
