[Archive] Chaos Dwarfs in Albion

Groznit Goregut:

Hi All,

I’m going to be running a state wide campaign set in Albion soon and I wanted to test the rules. I also wanted to test the Chaos Dwarfs. The rules are that each army is 2000 pts. You get a free caster that is either a Dark Emissary or a Truthsayer. You also get 300 pts of anything from the Storm of Magic book that isn’t a caster. So, all the horrible stuff cost too much, but it’s odd enough to add some crazy variety.

My list:

Castellan General w/ Black Hammer and Talisman of Endurance (5+ Ward)

Castellan BSB w/ Mask of Furnace

Lvl 2 Fire mage

Dark Emissary on Shadow

23 Infernal Guard w/ Razor Banner

40 Hobgoblins w/ shields, bows, banner, and musician

3 Bull Centaurs w/ full command, Great Weapons, and Banner of Eternal Flame

2 x Death Shriekers (one hellbound - I had some points left over…)

Magma Cannon

Hellcannon

5 Hobgoblin Wolf Riders w/ musician

I didn’t know what my opponent had, but it was (from what I can tell):

Goblin Warlord with Obsidian Blade on wolf

Lvl 4 Goblin Shaman on wolf

Goblin BSB w/ Spider Banner on wolf

lvl 2 Goblin Shaman on wolf

12 Wolf Riders (all in the same unit)

Gatilla the Hunter Special Character in 12 Wolves

Spider Gobbo special character in 10 Spiders

3 Wolf Chariots

3 Wolf Chariots

1 Wolf Chariot

Snotling Pump Wagon

Boar Chariot

12 Cold Ones

Carnosaur

I won table sides and put my Chaos Dwarfs behind a swamp. I then castled up around them. I put my Great Taurus and Bull Centaurs wide to get in the flanks.

He won for Vanguard first and moved out Gatilla. I moved mine towards the left to try to delay those guys and get a counter charge on my flankers.

I moved up my diverters:

Magic saw me throw 4 dice at a mid level Fireball…only to roll two 6’s! I killed some Wolves, but turned my caster into a lvl 0 mage.

For shooting, I was able to kill more of Gatilla’s Howler’s and the Hellcannon wounded some of the Wolf-Deathstar. No one panicked. I kept treating my magma cannon as a cannon! I would put the template 6" out and roll. I think I managed to hit one guy with it. Duh…I forgot the great advice here and just touch the base with the template.

After magic and shooting:

Goblins Turn 1

On his turn, his Cold Ones failed Frenzy and charge my Wolf Riders. They flee. His Chariots try to charge my Bull Centaurs (needing really high), but fail. He doesn’t quite go far enough to make a good counter charge…

The Cold Ones and Wolf Chariot charge my Bull Centaurs. I’m wanting to flee, but am too close to the Cold Ones and hold.

The single Wolf Chariot charges my Troll Diverter in front of Gatilla. His Snotling Pump Wagon rolls amazing and charges into the flank of my Harpy diverters! Doh! The rest of his army moves up. He gets off the Vindictive Glare on my Hobgoblins:

He then casts Curse of the Bad Moon super sized! Crap! He picks Init., of course. I didn’t have enough room for a dispel scroll. I roll all my dice, and fail to dispel. He clears out half the Hobgoblins and I roll amazing with the Chaos Dwarfs. He only kills half of them. The lvl 0 smith takes a wound. The spell then bounces off the table. I’m used to having a low Init with OnG, but not used to have such few models…

Oh, he also managed to cast Gift of the Spider God on his Wolf Star unit (feels so wrong calling it a “death star”). His shooting puts a wound on the Hell Cannon!!!

The Wolf Chariot only does 4 impact hits and then only a single wound on the Bull Centaurs! They have Scaly Skin? I forgot! T5 with a 2+ AS? Holy Taurus! Now it’s time for combat. Wait…I have the Banner of Eternal Flame! It causes fear in War Beasts! The Cold Ones may be Cold Blooded, but they fail their Fear test and are WS 1! He throws a lot of dice and still manages to get a wound on my BC! I throw a lot of dice…and brick it! I think I did 2 wounds? We calculate combat up…and it’s a tie since I have a banner! I have a musician, and he can’t! I win ??? Har! His Wolf Chariot runs, but his Cold Ones get Insane Courage!

The Snotling Pump Wagon destroys my Harpies and overruns a bit. His Wolf Chariot kills my Troll when I fail all my regen saves. He reforms to face the Bull Centaur (but pretty far).

Chaos Dwarfs Turn 2:

My Hell Cannon fails his Rampage test and is 1/2" short of General. Doh! He charges the Wolf Star. I think this is great! Besides that, I charge the Great Taurus at the Wolf Chariots on his flank. He fails a Terror test and flees pretty far. I roll terrible for charge distance and move something like 3" forward. ugh…too far away to do much. The Bull Centaurs move up a bit. I rally the Hobgoblins due to musician and try to move them up to block his advance.

Magic was uneventful. He dispelled my Miasma on his general’s unit from the Truthsayer. I didn’t want to throw more than 4 dice as I didn’t want to lose him due to miscast. Maybe I should’ve, though.

I messed up with my Magma Cannon again and missed completely. idiot. My Hobgoblin Horde rolled terrible and did nothing. My 10 Hobgoblins on my flank killed a Wolf Rider or two from Gatilla. I fired a Doom Rocket at a chariot unit and it just did a single wound. Not the smartest. The other one missed.

In combat with my Hell Cannon, his Wolf Star has Poison on a 5+ due to having the Poison Banner! His General has the Obsidian Blade, so no armor saves! Wolves attacking with a 5+ Poison are mean. He manages to kill one crew and leave me with two wounds left. I manage to kill some rank and file, but am Unbreakable. Wolf Star, indeed!

Do Hell Cannons have ward saves? I played that they didn’t. Should they?

In the fight with the Cold Ones, he fails his Fear test again. He does manage to do a single wound and kill one BC. I then smash him with decent rolling. He flees and outruns me.

Goblins Turn 2:

He charged Gatilla and his remaining Howlers at my small unit of 10 Hobgoblins. They manage to do 4 wounds with Throwing Knives! He saved one, leaving one Howler with Gatilla. I’m feeling alright about this…until his Pump Wagon makes it into combat!

The Goblin Spider Rider special character Ambushes from the rear this turn!

Crap, I am not loving it…

For magic, he IF’s Gork’ll Fix it with 4 dice and rolls Dimensional Cascade. His mage doesn’t fall down the hole, but it does a bunch of damage to his own unit and heroes. The Hell Cannon takes a wound leaving it with one. His magic is done.

The Pump Wagon destroys the 10 Hobgoblins left and they both overrun.

Chaos Dwarves Turn 3

It’s running late and the store is getting ready to close. We try to speed things up since we spent too long chatting about things and looking up the rules for all this Chaos Dwarf stuff…

I can’t recall if I just failed to charge my Bull Centaur at anything or I did and he fled.

I swift reform my Hobgoblins around to face the new Spider Riders. If his 3 chariots want to charge me through the swamp into my rear, they can.

I also move my Great Taurus back towards my lines. I could charge and make flee some of his cheap stuff, but I want to save my battle line!

Magic sees the Spider Riders Strength reduced to 1.

I finally figure out my flame template and touch the base with it. I fire the Magma Cannon and get a 10! Well, I kill off the last of the Wolf Rider unit and the BSB!

I think I killed a couple Spider Riders, but no more than 2. Bad rolling, even for averages. Or was it his good Armor Saves? Death Shriekers fire at the Carnosaur. One misses and the other does a direct hit with siege round! I wound! I roll…one wound. :expressionless:

No combat.

Goblins, Turn 3:

We decide to make this the last turn. He charges his chariots through the swamp at my Chaos Dwarf unit? Sure! He rolls his dice…and they all make it! Dang! I wish he had my luck…

His Spider Riders charge through a hail of throwing knives and most make it into combat.

He moves a bunch of his left over units back into the middle. His Wolf Rider units are seriously depleted. His Pump Wagon comes back on the board.

His magic does…nothing? Oh, he cast some blasting spells and I either dispel or he doesn’t get enough power.

In combat with the Spiders, I kill a lot and he kills 2. Special Character runs off the board! Take that! I think I forgot my back stabbing rule here or might’ve killed all of them. That would’ve been 3d6 S3 hits!

I’m not looking forward to his Impact hits with the chariots. He only rolls 6 hits! +3 makes that 9. He only manages to kill 3 or so? Har! Another dies in combat. I then kill 2 chariots. The last one flees! Holy Cow! 3+ AS and T4 ROCKS! Sure, he didn’t roll great, but that was AWESOME!

So, we called it here. We called a DRAW. If we played for longer, I would’ve won as he had a lot of weak units and I was just regrouping. My flankers hadn’t done much, but could get into it. I had lost a lot of Chaos Dwarfs, though.

MY TAKE:

The Chaos Dwarfs and Bull Centaur are really resilient! I can’t believe they shrugged off those impact hits! Amazing. I’m very impressed with them.

I need to do better with my war machines. The Magma Cannon would’ve done a lot better if I had managed to know how to shot with them! Also, I didn’t use my Doom Rockets in the best way.

Hobgoblin Shooting dice were below average and not a good indicator of how they will do. I know they won’t do MUCH, but they should’ve done a little better. The Horde did well, though.

He was a sneaky Git with that Spider Banner and Gift of the Spider God spell!!! Took out my Hell Cannon!!!

looked good, you said Albion? by chance Albion Michigan?

brotsorrow:

wow, intense battle report. Congrats on the draw (and the potential win). Some great tips/lessons from some of your hindsight

Actually, the Albion campaign that GW did a few years ago. Dark Shadows it was called and had it's own campaign booklet. Always one of my favorites.

@brotsorrow: Thanks! Yes, it was my first outing and I learned a lot. someone suggested castling more in the corner, but I wanted to force him through the swamp. I think if I knew my Magma Cannon, it would've been a different game.
