[Archive] Cheap Hobgoblin Chaff Models

Shub-Nullgurath:

I was having a think on what could be really cheap hobgoblin chaff and I thought of the Dark Alliance half-orc miniatures. They’re 1:72 scale so they’ll be really scrawny compared to dwarves but I figure any hobgoblins able to be enslaved wouldn’t be great anyway.

Also, it’s 44 miniatures for £8 so you can’t complain too much.

What do you guys think?

Bloodbeard:

1:72 is what I use for civilians, zombies etc for Devils Run - that’s a 20mm game. They fit right into Matchbox and Hot Wheel toy cars. So I really don’t think they’ll work as anything but slave snotlings. But very cheap miniatures for 20mm and 15mm gaming.

Any idea if these are liscenced Tolkien products because if not, I’m surprised they haven’t been collared by the Tolkien Estate or whoever holds the LotR movie rights these days.

That being said, considering how cheap they are they might be an affordable way to do a couple of LotR mass combat armies. Not sure what rules you’d use though. The WotR ruleset GW put out for their LotR was rather poor (iirc it was easy to do broken combos without even trying; don’t recall what they were off the top of my head but iirc there were things like if you chucked a couple of heroes into specific units then that unit auto killed anything it charged or some such stupidity), so something else would be in order. Maybe Warmaster with some tweaking of the bases sizes? Or possibly KoW (wouldn’t really need to change much if you only used it against other 1/72 scale armies as it’s the footprint that matters for units so you could get away with cramming more into a unit which would give the game a more epic feel).
