[Archive] Colour Scheme Examples

Shub-Nullgurath:

I’ve got a couple of Russian Alternative big axes and some Forgeworld daemonsmiths that I’ve started to assemble but I’m being very indecisive about what colour scheme to paint them.

I’m torn between:

  • Pale skin, aged bronze, light teal armour plates (inspired by the amazing Taming of the Wildman miniature paintjob)

  • Grey-ish skin, gold metal, purple armour plates.

Does anyone have colour scheme examples for chaos dwarves? Or their own painted examples? I could really do with some inspiration here.

Bloodbeard:

Take a flip through my blog. I painted my Chaos Dwarfs in purple armor, other members have done the same. See if you can dig up Zanthrax blog as well. Purple chaos dwarfs rock!

Skink:

…and I painted mine with gold armor and brass/gold-ish details. Give a look to my blog

They both look great. I'm definitely thinking more and more about doing cyan, though. The question would be what paints to use.

Look at this Overlord I painted. The cyan armor is done with Coat D´arms´ Green Grey mixed with Tank Light Grey & White for extreme highlights.

Jackswift:

They do not have the black skin, but for Bronze and Red examples, take a look here. Intermixed in the unit are FW Chaos Dwarfs with red armor, glowing red/orange eyes (though you cannot always see the eyes), and bronze trim:

And the Mechanical Bale Taurus about halfway down this page shows a good look at red armor with bronze (heavily patina?Td) trim

Not exactly how you describe it, but between these and the other examples Skink and Bloodbeard provided, this should help you decide which option you like best. I seem to recall that somewhere on here is a good example of a deep teal scheme, though I couldn’t locate it with a quick search.

The Bronze and red option is not uncommon, but can still be very unique as every painter does it differently. Cheers!:cheers

If Infernal Dwarfs/Chaos Dwarfs are known for one thing, it is as the best blacksmiths in the world. And, with that logic, I just don’t see them resorting to using bronze (an extremely substandard metal when compared to iron or steel). They absolutely wouldn’t arm their soldiers with it (might be fine for hobbos though…). They would use the best they have to offer. Add to that lots of folks like to make their armor teal or red or whatever…but then their weapons look like steel?? Are they different materials? Do they make steel axes and non-steel armor? That makes no sense at all and IMHO usually makes armies epic fail painted that way. Unless you are an above-average painter and want to spend extra time making it look good, I would stick to a standard steel-looking metal. If you really want color, you could add a really thin colored wash but even that has a tendency to look odd.

That being said, it’s your army. If you don’t care and just want three colors on every model so you can get down to playing, go with whatever you want! You want red or blue or green or teal armor, go make it happen! Heck, it’s a game after all! But if you want a better chance to have people stand back and admire your army, I’m afraid I recommend more logical colors.

Light skin, dark skin - that’s purely personal preference :hashut

Darkmeer:

My thinking is laquering on an insane detail level. Many of the scaled armors would be a game of one-upsmanship (I can picture chaos dwarfs putting miniature scenes of Hashut on each scale one-upping the smith next door, and so on, then lacquering them red or whatever as they tie them to the chain backing). This is just me for my justification on the armor. This has the added effect of helping to prevent corrosion and rust, a real danger to an army in the field, and less wax would be needed.

Your colour scheme is for your army. Make it work however you wish it to work. Sometimes “lesser” metals are placed on top of proper metals to add decoration to it, as was done on many suits of plate for upper nobility and royalty when that was the rage (some gold pattern work on high polish steel). There are just so many other options in my own mind in a fantasy universe using resins and paints to acheive the goals of a unified army theme (resins and paints being the lacquers that would be used in universe that we are emulating with our paint brushes and other conversion work).

I think of it as a combination of three things:
  1. Like you say, they're THE best blacksmiths in the world and they have access to magics that others do not. IMO, they'd be able to make any metal look like anything they want. Steel looking like bronze is a miracle for humanity but just a Tuesday for dwarves.
  2. The armour plates are enamelled with clan colourings. And, again, as chaos dwarves are the best blacksmiths, their enamel is almost as strong as human steel.
Just my personal opinion on the matter.
