[Archive] cuneiform and mesopotamian languages

rabotak:

since I just started studying ancient mesopotamic archeology and philology

(already being archeologist), i was just wondering how many - if any - members of this forum have similar interests and know how to read cuneiform-written languages such as akkadian or sumeran?

Grimstonefire:

I am interested mainly in the mythology of the period, also a little in the actual history. I cannot read cuniform, but I imagine CD would use something like this as it would carve easily.

GRNDL:

I haven’t done any cuneiform stuff, but for a recent project I focussed on norse runes and Old Norse language. Yeah, I know, not appropriate really.

Well, I was tempted, but i decided that Sanskrit was more practical.

two_heads_talking:

Nope, I can read Chinese and Japanese though…

Hashut’s Blessing:

GSF, I believe they still use Khazalid, which is based off of Norse runes, which are also designed for ease of carving

The Hittites used cuniform, but they had their own language, much akin to English in that is was an amlagamation of the surrounding languages with some twists and an odd grammar in comparison.

I know a little of Norse runic script, but I don’t know it as such. It’s always interested me, but I figure that if I find it so difficult to learn french and/or Spanish, then learning a new script as well as language may be beyond my abilities at this point.
