So I’ve been flirting with the idea of running 3-4 Deathshrieker rockets in my army. I wouldn’t be fielding any magma cannons but would probably take 1-2 hellcannons and/or an irondeamon. I know the rocket is underpowered with only str 3 but alot of times quantity is a quality all its own. I would probably run 2 LV 1 demon smiths to put in between the 3-4 machines to take advantage of any misfires or needs to reroll. What are y’all’s thoughts on this and sorry if this is already a thread, I’m new :hat off
Basically, rockets serve 2 purposes. Deleting large groups of t3 troops (witch elves, spearmen, anything thats t3) and taking down monsters with the large str8 missile. Spamming them to deal with everything you will feel either severe diminishing returns in damage (that t3 unit should be pretty much obliterated after one rocket), or a severe issue of uselessness when you are targets t4 opponents in heavy armor, it would just get ugly, it could be as bad that you are risking more in shooting off your rocket then just not shooting with them.
2hellcannons - good they can deal with generally anything in the shooting phase and are monsters.
Irondaemon- amazing should always take one, punishes people for taking monsters, monst inf/calv, solo characters.
Magma- good like a hellcannon, though limited range makes it difficult to setup a strong castle, and has worst anti-armor capabilities since no str10 hit on the center.
Rocket- good at taking out monsters and chariots, amazing at taking out t3, bad at everything else, is the only warmachine we can shoot into our combats.
I feel all chaos dwarf armies need 1 rocket, but they are cheap enough that you can take 3, but you will need hellcannons to be the real damage dealers in your case, and sacrificing re-rolls on rockets is generally bad.
Thanks for the input. It seemed kinda appealing to me in my head, the idea of rockets and explosions everywhere on a fantasy battlefield made me laugh. I wouldn’t do it to be competitive as I don’t play tournaments, but I completely forgot that the hellcannon can benefit from the smith also!! I would feel wrong placing them by the rockets and not the cannons. I guess I could field a hellcannon on each flank with a rocket and a smith in between to take advantage of the rerolls. Hmm:~
I find the Deathshrieker is a must…that big str hit is necessary to get of big gribblies…as whether its one or two is personal preference…if you cant fit 2 in plus at least 2 other machines you are golden…i take the Hellcannon, Magma cannon and at least one DS but if i have the points i squeeze in another one…
Deathshriekers also hit ridden monsters like a cannon so both the rider and mount are hit. This makes their low points very well spent. I like 2 but i do prefer hellcannons because they can fight, super hard to kill and are unbreakable. 2 of each always find a way into my army even at low points.
Rockets are great, cheap fun. 1 is enough, preferably sharing a Daemonsmith with a Magmacannon.
Our rocket-batteries excel at punishing chaff, play it in that light and try to get a rocket of at that annoying eagle or dark elf sorceress on pegasus. It’s also great vs. great cannons and Ironblasters.
How are you taking more than 3, unless you're playing over 3000 points...

In a 2500 pt game I could only rock 3 but 3000pts and up could go over that. I was more interested in the amount of fire it would be putting on the table. 5in pie plates, assuming they hit and dont scatter, is pretty awesome. Even if its only str 3. Magma would be better but I like the idea of the rockets and how random they are. I dont like to be super competitive, just have alot of fun and variation in my lists.
I run 2 usually with a daemonsmith you kill usually.kill something.
I dont use magma cannons there’s already enough stuff in our army.to kill chaff but I think we have problems with monsters that’s where the rockets come in.
I sometimes bring a hellcannon but I feel 2 warmachines are enough
