OK, originally I didn’t like this merger because Disney should remain Disney and Marvel should remain Marvel, but after reading that Marvel and Disney are both on the “Potentially Doomed” list as far as their yearly per capital figures during the present recession, I’m glad that they’re trying to preserve what they have by joining forces.
However, I’ll be upset if Disney treats Marvel in the same way as they treated Jim Henson’s Muppets after they bought Henson Enterprises (AKA~never seen again).
is this the entirity of marvel or just the film rights?
it could be interesting seeing as marvel is also doing a lot of steven king stuff right now, including the dark tower series, to see what happens with that. Im a big graphic novel fan so i just hope this doesnt mess up the best publishers in the business.
We could just have the CEOs fight to the death, and then have a comic about it… with lots of typical comic book insanity (don’t look at me, I never read the stuff). For the kids we could have a movie of how they had to unite to find some magical what-cha-ma-call-it… which holds the power to something overly cheerful and silly.
i think you have to realise at the moment marvel already do a lot of kids comics that are seperate from the adults but use the same characters, spider man springs to mind immediatly, as well as a new iron man tv show based on super kids. Disney is the same but opposite, yes they produced bambi, but they also make more mature films, although i would say family films and not gore fests. I think disney might be ok until it comes to something like the punisher.
Goodbye Hulk, goodbye Conan, goodbye Venom, goodbye... etc.
Maybe not. If Disney know anything, its how to make money. They already do a lot of other things which you wouldn't associate with them otherwise. For example, they own Miramax Films, responsible for releasing Kill Bill, Dogma, Gangs of New York, No Country for Old Men, etc. Not exactly the regular Disney fare, so *hopefully* they will just leave Marvel to run as it does now.
What I would be worried about is the dodgy stuff behind the scenes. Miramax have a dirty habit of buying the rights to foreign films and sitting on them/messing with their content. Their founder, Harvey Weinstein, is also notorious for making films more 'accessible' (ie re-editing them to make them easier for morons to understand). He tried to have Princess Mononoke cut and re-edited, thankfully he failed. These are the kind of things I hope they don't try with Marvel's stuff.
