A question that’s bound to create discussion about what is evil.
Generally, would you choose to play bad guys over good and why?
For me I spent many years collecting Dwarfs, and turning to something that represents corruption of everything that they are is what I find particularly interesting.
The whole aspect of working slaves until they die and sacrificing thousands I can’t say is what draws me to them, but it adds that extra little something looking at an army because you know they’re not just out to defend their homeland. They are (most likely) out raiding for slaves to get wealthy or for the glory of Hashut. Which is a unique trait I like as well.
I like playing “good” armies (I played Lizardmen 10 years before switching to CDs) because of Warhammer’s background, where in a world on the cusp of being engulfed by Chaos a few “good” races try desperately to fight back. It’s the sense of hopelessness that really makes it epic.
I play both good (empire, lizardmen, and dwarfs) and bad races (Chaos dwarfs) so i can agree with skink about the hopeless good guys but i do like the idea of bad races too. I guess it goes by how my mood is!
It’s in my nature to be drawn to the dark side of the Warhammer races. I was initially seduced by the models and play style of the Dark Elves and Chaos Dwarfs became a labor of love as a niche army. I’ve flirted with Tomb Kings, a neutral army but their army book sucks too bad to commit $$$ towards =(
Don’t know why, but I find the Good so incredibly boring with their high horses and shiny armour. No, dark and sinister for me. And if it’s chaos, well all the better.
That said, I have painted some lizards, a few years ago, but not so much to play with them. I just had them, so needed to paint them.
Also, from time to time I’m thinking of using one of the Good armies, but theme them in a much more appropriate way, i.e. turn them to chaos.
True, I do have a couple or more thousand points of Dwarfs aswell, but they are the exception - and I don’t play them anymore. I like dwarfs, what can I say.
I guess I gravitated to the "Bad" side because ... someone in my family had to do it.
and how come cold blooded reptiles who would eat you if they could catch you, get to be good guys?

Hey same things can be said about every "good" race in Warhammer:
HIGH ELVES: This is Ulthuan and it's mine, get outta here or I'll kill you. Plus I wear Prada and have two Uni degrees released by The University Of Saphery, so I'm cooler than you and if I say that you deserve to die you probably do.
WOOD ELVES: Get out o' my lawn or I'll shoot yer. Oooh, look Mabel, a daisy's blossoming!
LIZARDMEN: We remember "stuff" you other guys forgot ne'er two thousand yearz ago. Trust us, we do. And you shouldn't wander around the globe anyway (unless you are defending one of our geomantic nexuses). Ah, we are dirty rich but we cannot share tha plunda cauz our landlords (who fled through a stargate 5 millennias ago) said so. In the meantime a fatso croaks in the background and a couple of Temple Guards mince you to the consistency of an Happy Meal.
BRETONNIA: For the glory of the Realm! In search of the Graal! In the meantime I'm a gritty, despotic tyrant who treats his people like cattle, thinks that technology's bad and listens to a big boobed elven lady who rides a unicorn and basically owns the country's Mass Media. She usually runs the show at court and points randomly at enemies somewhere who are wiped away in a big "crusade".
EMPIRE: Warhammer's scapegoat. I'd say that these guys are allowed to be angry at things.
I dont really understand the question… You might know (or not, it doenst matter) I an a goblin warlord by heard, and when I play gobbos I never really see myself as being evil, at the most: misunderstood.
Just be cause we (us at CDO) are humans does not mean the empire being also filthy umans are automatically the goodguys, thats just racist! And dont get me started about highelfs, I dont want to pull a Goodwin here, but “good guys” really? I’d rather play dwarves, they were their allies once and thought those humans how not to walk the earth as cave man. what did they get in return? shaved scalps and more racism.
OK, maybe Chaos might be considered really bad or or bad guys. I wont really argue that. But are dark elfs bad? thats just a question about who will write history (them or the High and mighty elfs). true they worship maybe the wrong gods but saying that is a very slippery slope indeed. And yes they might have slaves witch in our (human) eyes is bad, but these are different times, its not like they have a democracy in the Empire or Lustria for that matter (if I’m not mistaken its dictatorships all around).
So to get to Chaos Dwarves, when I play them I do not consider myself “bad” I might think of my opponents army as lesser beings. but tell me, dont you feel the same if you play any kind of elf or other army for that matter…?
Halflings are goody little two shoes, thats why they so heavily outnumbered. all the rest is one big grey area.
(oh and sorry, long rant, just came back from beer with friends, this was just what i needed)
Well, I don’t consider them evil really…this will sound rather odd…but for me to play Chaos Dwarfs and Hobbo’s stems from my love as a kid of the 1980 Rankin Bass animated film ‘Return of the King’. As a kid I LOVED the bit of the comical and goofy Orcs/Goblins singing “Where there’s a whip, there’s a way”, see it here:
Yes, singing it as a kid around the house made my parents wonder what the hell was wrong with me, singing about whips and ‘evil’ guys from the dark lands…so naturally when I first saw GW Chaos Dwarfs a nostalgic smile came across my face. At last! An army with whips and greenskin slaves marching off to war from the dark lands! Yes, where there’s a whip, there’s a way! Perfect! :idea
Yes, although my uncontested favourite army is Dwarfs, regardless of system (WHFBR, Dreadfleet, Mordheim, Lotr). The aesthetics of the Chaos Dwarf army are aweinspiring, but the background with an evil dwarven empire bent on hellish innovation, arms dealing, slave economy, cruelty, megalomania, industry, heavy armour, overwhelming firepower, daemonforging, fiendish rituals and mysticism is simply too good to resist.
there’s no “good” or “bad” when you talk about armies.
even if, having to think “why my army wants to fight?”, with bad guys “because fook U, that’s why!” is always a good answer.
I play and collect Dawi-Zharr because I like playing Bad@ss armies, with Bad@ss weapons/armors/toys/trinkets o’Doom!, that’s why.
And, when the stars will get right (so new Armybook, nice plastic models and lots of money) I’ll collect plain dorfs. Paniagua dorfs, old gw dorfs, bad@ss dorfs.
