Hi everybody. I’m planning on starting a Chaos Dwarf army as my first WHFB army, and I’m trying to save as much money as possible.
I’m not really an expert with green stuff, so I don’t want to make my Dwarfs look retarded by putting crappy looking self-made masks on them. The only bits I have are random Space Ork bits (and occasional Chaos Space Marine bits from my girlfriend), so I decided to go with an evil dark-grey skin (until I can hone my green stuff skills).
Here are some pictures of how I want to paint them:
Of course, being a horrible painter, I don’t expect them to look anything like that, but you get the idea.
Does anyone have any advice on the colors/methods I’d need to use for painting that kind of really dark grey skin? For example, I could use some advice on painting skin in general, color mixes, etc.
Currently (in terms of the skin colors) I’ve got Chaos Black, Codex Grey, Fortress Grey, Bleached Bone, and Skull White. I’ve heard inks can really bring out a gritty look for shading, but I’ve only got Brown and Blue ink at the moment (but I can always buy more if recommended).
First of all I think if you attend to give your Chaos Dwarfs this skin color you won’t even need high standard conversions to make em look chaosy
For painting the skin I’d suggest you layer the colors starting with the most dark color and working towards the lightest color on the edges (ie. finger tips, cheeks and ‘muscles’ on the hands).
However, another method which is more appropriate using the paints you have is (after layering with greyish paints) inking the hand with blue ink. Be sure to mix the ink with quite a large amount of water (mix of 1:6 should do the job) to prevent your skin from shining, even after the ink dried.
I prefer the former method but you’d have to aquire some blueish grey paint (like space wolves grey) or mix a tiny amount of blue paint to the greys you already have. Most important of all is that the paint covers the undercoat so that it won’t shine through, but considering the colors you want to use, I think that won’t be the problem here.
I hope these suggestions will help you any further.
Thanks a bunch! I picked up some black ink the other night for more defined areas, so I might be able to ink faces and beards and such. Although, I’ll definitely pick up some Space Wolves Grey on the next trip to the hobby store to try that out.
Looks like the same sort of colours the eavy metal lot paint their ogre kingdoms ogres, and id bet their will be a guide to paint them on their website . . or if not a quick look through their army book should show you the colours.
Try giving a coat of Codex Grey, then a thinned down black wash, and then once it’s dry highlighting with Fortress, or even half Codex/half Fortress. I find that the ink is good to really make the knobby and muscly bits stand out, and that a very simple highlight aftwerwards works well. That’s more or less how I did my sorcerer, and also how I do Space Wolf armour.
Another one to try would be a basecoat of Codex Grey, highlighted by blending in Bleached Bone up to as light as you want it. That’s how I did my ogres, and I was really happy with the result.
I’ve met Kris Aubin before and we actually talked about how he got that skintone. Start with a black basecoat (duh). Paint the skin areas in a dark grey (codex grey mixed with black). Then you paint on a slightly narrower layer of a codex grey-black mix (use less black so it’ll be lighter than the first colour but still darker than codex). Add yet another layer with plain codex grey, and make your final highlights with fortress grey.
That was amazingly helpful! Just what I was looking for (the Kris Aubin thing, I mean). I’m glad I’ve got adequate amounts of the paint for it. high-fives The Flying Beaver

Hmm.. I'd swear I saw a blue teint on that Dawi Zharr skin...
