[Archive] Expedition to Karak Vlag

Skitter:

Expedition to Karak Vlag.

So, the great city of Zharr Naggrund has finally started a push westwards. A new age of expansion is imminent. One of the targets is the lost hold of Karak Vlag. The house of sorceror lord Ashuram has been tasked with this undertaking.

A base is set up at Uzkulak, and from here the expedition pushes westwards across Zorn Uzkul. Ashuram sends a small force lead by the warrior Akhiban and Raman the sorceror to act as advisor. As the force approaches the valley leading to the eastern entrance to Karak Vlag, hobgoblin wolfrider scouts return with important information. The eastern mines are being worked by the living dead.

More scouts are dispatched to get a clear view of what the situation is, and they manage to locate the hold of a vampire a bit further up the valley. It does not seem to be too well fortified, so Akhiban decides to march on it the next day.

As they aproach the hold it becomes clear that they have been spotted well in advance, as an army of the dead marches out to meet them in perfect formation. Knights, ghouls, zombies, skeletons, dire wolves and a dreaded Vargulf. The chaos dwarfs and quickly form a battle line. The two armies meet head on before the artillery can do much damage. Raman struggles to contain the onslaught of magic as long dead warriors crawl from the ground, though his blunderbuss bodyguard react quickly and sends them back to the ground once more. After a long battle Akhiban manages to cut his way through the enemy?Ts centre and slay one of the vampire lieutenants in the process. The vampire general admits defeat, and with a final curse he heads out of the valley together with his black knights.

The first part of the expedition is finished as the chaos dwarfs sets up a new base in the conquered hold of the vampire. The push further up the valley towards the eastern gate will have to wait until more reinforcements arrive from Uzkulak.

So this was my first battle with chaos dwarfs in over 10 years. It was a small friendly 1250pts battle. Not too impressed with my earthshaker or death rocket, beween them they killed 3 skeletons and 2 black knights. My guessing was on target, but only managed to roll ?ohit? once in 10 rolls. 18 blunderbusses impressed though, as did a solid block of warriors with the general. More embarrasing, I forgot 3 of my magic phases… probably because I was so thrilled to fire my earthshaker again after more than 10years of hibernation for the lovely machine.

This was also the start of the fluff for my army, namely the establishment of a chaos dwarf hold in the Worlds Edge mountains. I will resettle the lost hold of Karak Vlag. Later matches will probably be against beastmen and dwarfs, in addition to vampires. What horrors lurk inside Karak Vlag? Time will show.
