[Archive] Flames of war:help and advice

vulcanologist:

Hi was thinking of purchasing some flames of

War miniatures as I fancy doing something historical as a change from fantasy. Was just hoping for some advice from all the FoW collectors here. All advice would be grateful from where to buy, good websites, painting and basing tips, army composition, rulesets and timeperiods etc etc.

All help would be great thanks

Well, first of decide what front/era/nation you want to play… Then I can advice you on the books, mainly its divided in Early(39-41)- Mid(42-43)- and Late(44-45) war. There are lots of usefull articles on Battlefronts homepage as well.
Its designed as WFB so you can build an army of 1500pst and field it against any other 1500pts army and it should be a good game. BUT its much better balanced and youll enjoy your games alot more if you both play armies designed against each other. Say example Finns and Soviets summer 44, Italians and Britts NA 41 and so on.

welcome to the show, fow is a great game! next advice i can give you is after you decided on nation and era, and know what lists you want to be playing to have a look at alternative miniatures sellers - there aren’t as many as for whfb, but some options are a LOT cheaper… for soviets and germans, have a look at zvezda and plastic soldiers company, they have some very cheap infantry and tank sets, for those two+ brits and yanks try forged in battle… most of these companies only sell alternatives for the basic, that is most common options, but you can still save a metric ton of cash if you supplement your force with a couple of cheap kits.

play late war. There are more players for that time (at least around my parts).

I have a fully painted afrika korps and can barely find an opponent.

as for alt miniatures, I like Command Decision by Old Glory. The vehicles are a little different scale though

Thanks fellas for all the advice please keep it coming it’s greatly appreciated! I was thinking of collecting a British infantry force for either Sicily/Italy or the breakout of Normandy. I would like to recreate an actual battalion of a specific infantry regiment - 8th battalion Durham light infantry. How would I go about force composition and creating a viable playable force and also what rulesets do I need?

tjub:

Then you should get either Turning Tide or Cassino. There are also specific breifings for the the Brittish found here, my focus has always been on the east front so I dont know too much about them…:hat off

vulcanologist:

Thanks Tjub that was super-helpful! Turning Tide looks like its the one for me as it has info on the 50th Tyne Tees Division which contained the regiment i’m interested in re-creating. So I need that book and a copy of the FOW rulebook yes? Is there anything else i need? (miniatures obviously but I’m guessing guides to creating my force will be included?)

rabotak:

except for the obvious dice and tape measure you will “need” fow’s own artillery template, but that should be it!

vulcanologist:

Cheers Rabotak! appreciate all the help!

rabotak:

you’re welcome! you will enjoy this game, very fun, clear and mostly even balanced rules, save for very few examples… just don’t be to strict with the rulebook- it is quite a mess!

I think that goes for every game, play rules as intended instead of RAW.
Btw, on the note of indipendent minis I like Peter Pigs stuff alot.

rabotak:

actually i meant that the rulebook is chaos- to look up a rule (for instance recce) you might have to search several pages back and forth to find what you’re looking for. the ruleset itself is fine imo
