[Archive] Frost's Legion *kit-bashed skull cracker 3/13/12*

frostbit3:

So started building some chaos dwarfs following having fun playing with and against a friends new dwarf army a month or so ago and looking at the beautiful new forgeworld models.  I prefer my little guys with helmets, and liked the style of the FW.  I decided to try and replicate the general look using bits I had lying around.   The following models are the result.  They are heavily WIP as far as painting goes.

Basecoats/base washes on metals.  Reds are as done as I will be putting effort into them for this army.

Comments and criticism more than welcome.  Need motivation to do some work.

Nicodemus:

Excellent beginning!! Some fantastic work combining those bitz and the coloru scheme, although appearing simple in terms of colour choices, is very well executed and looks fantastic!!

Keep 'em coming!

Da Crusha:

I think they look great, the only bit of criticism that I have is I think their heads look rather thin and alone between those shoulder pads. maybe if you added more armour in there, like a plate or something mounted high on their backs to guard the back of their necks, I think that would help them look even better. other than the neck thing I really like the direction your going.

tjub:

Looks great so far! Are all the non dwarf bitz from chaos warriors, or are there any other?

Admiral:

Really good Chaos Dwarfs, although I’d have shortened down their heads. It’s Chaos Warrior/Marauder Horsemen heads, old Chaos Warrior shoulderpads and weapons from the same sources?

Golder Goldeater:

I think they are axcellent! Keep it up!:hat off

frostbit3:

Thank you guys for the feedback and compliments.

It’s actually chaos knight shoulders, and knight and warrior heads. Weapons are mostly from the knight sprues. Lance heads turned into greatswords, etc.

vulcanologist:

Excellent warriors! I like the consistency of their looks and the classic red paintjob is very well done and looks great! Looking forward to seeing more!

that guy:

They look awesome. As far as I can tell you very much achieved what you set out to do.

Even though I think they look great the way they are, I would say Da Crusha’s recomendation of some sort of plate at their necks wouldnt be a bad addition.

Galladorn:

The warriors look FANTASTIC. The originality is what I enjoy the most. When you think about it, their weapons are absurdly huge…and that’s why they’re great!. The dark paintjob adds to their fearsomeness. Damn good job.

Ishkur Cinderhat:

Wow very nice idea with those great weapons. :hat off The warriors look very grim, very dark. My kind of Chaos Dwarf style, even if they lack the hats!

There is an amazing level of support on this forum, so I am looking for some help.  I am quite stuck on a magma cannon conversion I am working on.  I was really inspired by a model I saw Zanko using for a rocket battery.  Maintenance

I am MUCH more into the mechanical aspect of the CD’s, over the demonic posession side of things.  I really don’t like the FW magma cannon, but am in love with the rules.

The idea behind my model is that the cannon shoots the fuel (from side mounted barrels) over the pilot light, and a flaming gout of oil/whatever lands on the enemy.

It needs a few more bits to look more WFB and less 40k, but I am kinda stuck on where/what to do to improve it.  Or do I just smash it with a hammer and be done with it?

Admiral:

I think it looks fine. Just be sure to fill in the little gap line that’s visible in the cannon barrel.

As for fantasizing it furter, I’d say you’ll need some jewellry chains, a pinch of spikes, a fuse, a slave of some sort (preferably Gnoblar) and perhaps some Chaos stars or Chaos Dwarf icons (rune of Hashut, FW’s new rune, a lightning bolt in a skull, a bull’s head etcetera).

tjub:

Looks really cool like a giant flame thrower! …but for some reason Im thinking Flak 88. :stuck_out_tongue:

vulcanologist:

Ha I like it! A fantasy flak gun! That should bring down those pesky dragons!

ChungEssence:

Great chaos dwarfs.

The upper part of your Magma cannon looks fine, but the bot def screams 40k to me so I would recommend changing it. I think it would look a lot better mounted on something like a screaming bell base.

Abecedar:

I do so love red and black themes that Im actually trying to avoid doing them myself. Yours looks great and I might have to change my mind.

Abyssal_Terror_:

Your warriors look ace so far! Cant wait to see more!

frostbit3:

It’s been awhile since I touched my dwarfs, but got drunk today and had a go.  here’s where I’m at with my 2hw infernal guard.

And the cannon (which looks terrible in this light, but spent some time on it today.

The light is awful.  will try to get some better later.  the cannon barrel was a tragedy once I had some paint on it, and I need to put some green stuff work into it.

frostbit3:

here’s the above in a little better light.

i may have gone too bright with the metallics, but it will be good on the table. the photo is a fairly bright “natural” light.
