[Archive] Genestealer Cults

Dînadan:

Don’t think we have a thread on this yet.

The next 40k Codex is Genestealer Cults, an old fan favourite that’s long been pushed into the background. So what do people think? Great idea, or are they something that should be consigned to the dustbin of history along with Squats?

(Speaking of Squats, could the return of Genestealer Cults mean there’s a chance for them to return too someday?)

Skink:

I’d also say “finally” and “great idea”. People are fairly excited about this on other forums as well.

I know I said this a million times already, but I really like the direction that GW has taken over the last year. I can’t see why Squats couldn’t resurface as well!

Dînadan:

Preordered a copy of the 'dex earlier today.  Ordered it on the-outpost.co.uk who are selling it for £20 (rrp on GW site is £30)

Hoping that it’ll include rules for limos and other repurposed civilian vehicles.  Some leaked pics have appeared on the net showing what look to be armoured cars (they look similar to the IG Taurox but more car-like), but no limos so far as far as I’m aware.

When I get around to doing an army, not sure what ‘theme’ to do; go with the standard hive world theme or something else.  Think it could be interesting doing a feudal world theme and having the vehicles replaced with carridges (eg like the Vampire Count Black Coach and the Empire wizard chariot things).

As for Squats, I think sales figures for the Mantic Forge Fathers would be a good indicator for Squat popularity (factoring in the marmite factor of Mantic minis) as I bet most of those who’ve bought them are those who like Squats/want to see them return.

cornixt:

My favourite 40k army. Had so much more depth than Tyranids, even if it did go a bit “80s US religious cult” in style rather than more generic.

Admiral:

This is ingenious and highly tasteful. I always found the background when read to the letter (as opposed to polishing it with one’s own imagination) to be quite silly at times, but who cares when the minis look this good. Welcome back, cult! Things like Ad Mech and Genestealer Cults are so much more interesting than Space Marines. May this direction long continue. :cheers

Bitterman:

Genestealer Cults: big thumbs up from me. It’s almost as though GW have started listening to what their customers are asking for…?

That said, I would be very, very, very surprised to see Squats return. At least in any recognisable form - the Demiurg spaceships in Battlefleet Gothic are one thing, but hairy biker dwarfs would be quite another.

Thommy H:

Never say never - Genestealer Cults were supposedly out of fashion with the design studio for many years and now they’re back. Whether they could seamlessly update Squats into the current 40K milieu, I’m not sure. I never thought I’d see the day when the endless update cycle gave way to stuff like Harlequins, Adeptus Mechanicus, Deathwatch, and now GS Cults. I got the latest White Dwarf delivered today, and Arbites get conspicuously name-dropped more than once. In the Jes Godwin interview, he talks about design cues on vehicles, and mentions you can tell at a glance the difference between an Eldar tank and Astra Militarum or Adeptus Arbites vehicles. Since they don’t have any, it struck me as slightly suspicious! And then there’s always Sisters of Battle to come…

Honestly, it’s quite exciting. Or it would be if it was possible to make an army list for 40K without having to wade into the mess that is detachments, formations, force organisation charts, allies, etc. etc…

True, never say never, but still... Squats? Now, Arbites I can absolutely believe, and they'd be a nice follow-up to GSCs, too. Sisters of Battle, I hope so (but don't want to disappoint myself by hoping too hard). Squats...? Let's just say I'll believe it when I see it, and not a moment before.

God, yes! I've been playing 40K since Rogue Trader, I've got more than 10000 points of Tau, I've been playing Tau since something like two months before they were released (I got my first Tau model a week before the mysterious preview showed up in WD), I've taken Tau to tournaments and campaign weekends and played probably a few hundred games with them... and... I sat down to write an army list for a game next month, using the new Tau Codex for the first time (not that it's that "new" now), and... I realised I didn't even know where to begin. If there's ever a sign that your game is creaking under the weight of its own cruft, that, right there, is it: 30-year veterans of your games find the army selection process too cumbersome to use. Ugh.

Dînadan:

Squats could return, just not as the hairy bikers type. There’s a pic of a concept sketch of a Demiurge that makes it look like a dwarf under its armour (think Mantic Forgefathers but a touch more rotund), so that could be used as a jumping off point for revamping the Squats (it’s long been a fan theory that the Demiurge are the fleet based Squats).

And considering there used to be Chaos Squats, another avenue could be to start with them, introducing them in a Chaos supplement as weapon techs, like how CDs were revamped in fantasy with the Helcannon and crew, maybe even as part of a Dark Mechanicum list, and at a later date doing a non-corrupted Squat/Demiurge book.

Dînadan:

My copy of the 'dex has just arrived, time to tear into it

Admiral:

This coven limousine would be highly interesting to budding cult collectors:

And these Imperial cars for intercepting it in traffic:

Carcearion:

Personally like the Ad-Mech and Deathwatch I’m really happy with where 40k is going right now, I’m thinking of collecting some genestealer cultists just for my Dark Heresy games (maybe just some singles maybe a kill-team) although I think Battle Sisters and Kroot deserve love right now… unfortunately though the state of the game as a whole is an ugly mess right now, rife with tons of unusable units, a few unusable armies, and tons if craziness in the new campaign books which is all transparently motivated by selling miniatures rather then a good gaming experience (not to mention some glaring instances GW ruining their lore), as it stands I can’t really play it anymore and I have high hopes for a new edition in a few years or better yet Mantic’s take on it sometime sooner.

Admiral:

Yes, the game as such is a joke at the moment. But oh boy are the miniatures recently released better and way more interesting than the standard treadmill codex stuff we’ve seen for years on end. Three cheers for peripheral forces and parts of the background brought into the limelight. :cheers

And who knows? Demiurg or even Squats could show up eventually if this trend keeps up. It doesn’t take a massive amount of tweaking to fit short beardling abhumans or aliens into the setting. 40k is wondrously large and full of space for small niche things, though I hope a new take on Squats per say would involve some brand new approaches to make them something more than their original incarnations were, i.e. less Dwarfs in space (although that alone is reason to keep them).

Skink:

For the record, GW released a video on Warhammer TV (Facebook based show) where they confirm some rumors that were floating around.

1 ) To begin with, they showed a plastic kit for Magnus the Red. The Daemon Primarch is as tall as an Imperial Knight, and will be spearheading a flurry of releases for the Thousand Sons, which will include a new Ahriman (confirmed).

2 ) Apparently, Angron, Mortarion & Fulgrim will be released as well, together with a loyalist Primarch, the identity of whom is yet to be uncovered (still a rumor, I hope Jagathai Khan).

3 ) Sisters of Battle will receive tons of love. In the video mentioned above people talk about a plastic sprue for them (confirmed).

4 ) These Imperium & Chaos heavy releases are supposedly heralding an advancement in the timeline, with Abbadonn launching his 13th Black Crusade. After that, the rules are going to be tweaked. However, this will not destroy the background (like in Warhammer Fantasy), and will not lead to radical changes in the rules (rumor)

EDIT: Here’s Magnus, and here’s the video where they confirm the existance of a plastic sprue for Sisters of Battle.

Carcearion:

Wow that’s all very very excitin! Theirs quite a few primarchs that qualify and I have to agree I would like to see The Khan more then any of them. I have to say after the very disappointing lore choIces in End Times I fear for the setting, but who knows maybe they won’t make the same mistakes (sure hope Vect isn’t the new king of the Eldar). Unfortunately though these great model releases won’t make my Dark Eldar playable, or my buddies pyrovores, lictors, ogryn, ratlings, or rough riders, (to only name a few) not abjuctivly bad choice to put on the table. But you know allot of these do make things look like they are making a real effort to please the fan base, I just hope that bringing the rule system up to snuff is also a real priority.
