[Archive] Grimstonefire's Sculpting Blog (pic heavy)

Grimstonefire:

I figure I’ll just put all these projects in one thread, as there will be a lot of them in the months to come.

Here is an ogre I’m sculpting.  Hopefully it will be for sale one day, which obviously means it cannot be infringing on GW IP.

What specifically I’m looking for feedback on at the moment is whether to give him trousers or not?  The other option being barbarian style fur hotpants ;), conan style.

He’s going to have armour strapped to his thighs, shins, shoulders and arms.  In one hand an axe and in the other a knuckle duster.

Rubbish pics I know.

I am going to be resculpting the face to be a bit smaller, as I didn’t really want the head to be much bigger and the face is too tall at the moment.

A couple of other things I’ve been working on:

The Verminous Fiend.  A model I also hope will be for sale.  So much I need to do on this I won’t go through it all.  Sufficed to say it is a long way off being done

Lastly, the Nurgle Ogre that is nearest being finished.  This one I plan (eventually) to cast myself and sell individually on ebay, as the people I planned to sell it through were not happy with the sculpting (quality and design), and how close it was to GW IP.  Which I wouldn’t have considered an issue for this guy, hence my plans to sell him myself at some point.  A bit more work needed on him, but he’s behind the two models above.

Edit.

The best of the rest.  Some of my best sculpts to date:

(WIP sorcerer)

Bolg:

wow, I wish I could sculpt like that! keep the pictures coming!!

vulcanologist:

I shall be following this blog with keen interest grim! Any chance of some tutorials or step by steps for all us sculpting beginners?

snowblizz:

Two things I think you should look at.

The horn on the helmet has a very “just tacked-it-on with bluetack” kind of look. I’d say it’s a bit too large for the helmet as well.

And The shoulder pad’s spikes look odd to me. Or maybe it is the whole pad, there’s something “piggish” about the face. Can it be the focus in the pic?

Grimstonefire:

I’ve updated this with the best pics of things I’ve done so far that are mostly scratch sculpted (a few heavily converted).  Eventually I’ll get a website.

Made it a little more viewer friendly with all the thumbnails.

Note the guy on the horse at the bottom of the list of pics. The first horse I ever sculpted. Infact now that I think of it both the 2 complete models I sculpted for my FW application were of things I had never done before… :~ Lesson learnt.

Whilst I happen to be posting here, an update on the ogre.

There are several WIP things I may put up here eventually, things that will probably never be finished.  But I guess it’s all interesting for people to see.  My razorgor, a massive flesh hound and a fire wizard I half finished.

Currently also sculpting a High Elf spearman (spear elf?).

@vulcanologist.

A tutorial really would depend on what it was to be of.  Something like a dwarf or a man would be reasonably simple to put together, but something like a horse for instance is not something I would recommend to anyone. ;)  I seem to remember someone doing a good CD sculpting tutorial already?  Was it on here or in WoH?

Well, look at it this way: its better than the first horse I ever tried. And no, there are no pictures of it! ;) It was obliterated with haste and gusto.
The other option being barbarian style fur hotpants
Ogres in hotpants, furry or otherwise, will never get my vote. Never. Trousers for the win.

vulcanologist:

A step by step of a dwarf or man would be great but also just a guide to basic tips and techniques?

Grimstonefire:

I’ll see what I can do.

As I said above, I’ve been sculpting a spear elf.  So here he is.

Loki:

Awesome work wish i could do this with green stuff, looking forward to seeing more

nitroglysarine:

Looks good, only criticism (as petty as it is) The arms don’t look like material to me, they look more like bear muscle.

-this might just be me with the new Dark Elder with bare arms in mind corrupting my opinions.

maybe more of a crush on the material??

Swissdictator:

Looking amazing Grim, very good work here.

Your sculpting skills are astounding.

I do love the Empire guy, my favorite style of state troops (6E era style)…

Amazing work all around though.

Bassman:

I would like to help you and give you some suggestions.

I’m not that great sculptor but I’m a pretty good at drawing. You seems to be committed to the classic mistakes made when I was learning to paint and draw.

Beginners overwhelm their drawings with details in the haste to make the best painting in the world with the result of obscuring defects with details.

Look at your elf: details are perfect but the anatomy is clearly wrong and arms are in an akward and unnatural position.

The same with your human mage (?), his clothes are really good, the horse details are nice but everything is “static”, like being frozen, if you understand what I mean with my poor English.

I am not able to sculpt like you, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt :stuck_out_tongue: but you need to improve your skills with basic anatomy.

With ogreas and humanoids you seem to have less problems because their anatomy is basicaly deformed human anatomy, so it is easier to hide defects.

I do not think sculpting an over detailed miniature of the emperor would help you (even tough it would be super funny  ) to improve your skills. You clearly already know how to sculpt superb details.

Go back to the basic, study anatomy and try to sculpt naked human bodies, make them more fluent, natural… when you are satisfied you just need to dress them up!

Hope this could give a little help

Snotling:

Awesome! Where did you learn to sculpt like that? Tutorials, art lessons oder simply practise? I wanna do that, too. But the GS doen’s make, what I want and I very often don’t even know, what I want… maybe that’s another problem

The_Bear_in_the_Hat:

Genuinely impressive work, Grim. I like the Slayer a lot.

tjub:

Love the Dwarf Lord och Oathstone!

Da Crusha:

incredible sculpting work. my favorite is the inferno golem but everything else is also awesome. great work! I look forward to seeing what you come up with next.

Baggronor:

There’s something amiss with the elf’s legs, I’m not quite sure what though. He looks good in the front and back shots and a little off in the 3/4 shot. The armour came out well though :cheers

you need to improve your skills with basic anatomy.
I have a lot of life drawing experience and find this is very helpful when getting anatomy right (or at least spotting what I’ve done wrong!). Also, try the poses yourself and see where your limbs go naturally when you complete the motion. Better yet, get someone else to pose it for you, so you can sketch it.

snowblizz:

Baggronor
Funny, that's one thing that bothered me most with the Spearelf where I think the original does it better. Well aside from the atrocious moldlines.

Baggronor
I did that once to re-pose a Blood Thirster...:D

Privacy is recommended while doing it.

Baggronor:

Oh yes :) Although I do have some pretty amusing photos of a wide variety of people who agreed to pose for sketches.

Grimstonefire:

In terms of the pose I thought it was quite natural actually.  The arms are where they would be if you were holding a spear like that I think.  Elbows slightly forwards, spear tip down a bit due to the weight.  Leaning towards the spear tip a little.  The arms are perhaps a mm or so too long, something I could correct eventually.  The knees would have been more obvious if I had done him squatting like the HE spear elf.

Anyhow, I had fun sculpting him, especially the scale mail.

@Bassman

I think after the Emperor I will do some basic humans. I don’t have much experience of doing them and obviously it’s something I will need to be able to do.
