[Archive] GW discontinuing CD Bloodbowl team?

Soulassassin:

I just noticed that the CD Bloodbowl team and the individual CD blood bowl models have been taken off the GW website. Blood bowl has been rumored to be re released for quite some time, but it would be too much to hope for to get a new CD team.

Most likely this is a part of phasing out the specialist games, yet again. In that case; sad panda.

Any more info?

Grimstonefire:

Yep, all Specialist Games are being phased out, never to return outside of space hulk type boxes I suspect.

Also all metal models in general, certainly all the collectors models (dogs of war etc), but also metal characters.

I’ve been making a killing on ebay selling some BFG stuff.

Willmark:

When 3d printing becomes cheap enough, problem solved.

Da Crusha:

I heard that you can get bits and models 3d scanned and printed already for much cheaper than a new model.

cornixt:

Price is about comparable, quality is a bit lower. Won’t be long before the trade-offs even out.

RiTides:

As someone who has worked with 3D printers of many types at my job, purchased and built a 3D printer from a kit (MakerBot Thing-O-Matic), and is waiting on the Form 1 3D printer to ship after it’s Kickstarter campaign… I disagree that the cost is comparable yet.

It will likely get closer and closer in the future, but it’s hard to match casting costs with printing costs.

Services like Shapeways are excellent for having things printed… but it’s still not all That cheap.

3D Scanning is an interesting topic and will certainly open things up more. However, I had not before heard of services that would cheaply 3D scan a model or bit and print out copies of it.

This discussion might also be getting a bit far afield of the rules here (not sure)… my main desire in owning a 3D printer and working with them is to print new creations, not copies, although obviously a lot of people will use them for that.

I also think that 3D scanning may be the thing holding that part of the equation up… it is getting cheaper but when I worked with it at my job, there was a lot of cleanup required… it wasn’t simply “scan and print”.

Anyway, sorry if this is a bit far afield for this thread, just wanted to address that!

Chico:

Thanks RT, as someone which doesn’t know too much about 3D printing that really was enlightening

I here there doing the same to all metal figures too …beside the games

Thommy H:

I’m not sure why 3D printing will mean the end of miniature manufacturing any more than 2D printing meant the end of books.

Willmark:

Who said anything about the end of game companies? I certainly didn’t.

Thommy H:

Neither did I - I meant “miniature manufacturing” in the sense of the actual, physical act of manufacturing a miniature, not the whole industry. I don’t think 3D printing will be a substitute for mass production of figures for the very same reason that we don’t all print our own books. Just because you can do something in your own home doesn’t mean it’s a practical use of your time.

You seem to have created a response to an opinion that wasn’t mentioned in this thread

Or in the OP, for that matter ;P

Slightly on topic: Was that the last opportunity to buy Big Hats directly from GW? The only chaos dwarf that are available now are the Hellcannon crew.

Thommy H
Problem in this context would seem to refer to replicating miniatures someone else decided not to make anymore.

Thommy H:

Yeah, so if we could do that, we wouldn’t need anyone to make any figures for us any more: just scan an original in, print as many as you like. I’m just saying I don’t think it’ll happen like that.

Vogon:

I wish I’d book marked it but I read a great thing about 3D printing and its pros and cons for various uses.

Basically (at the moment at least) only the really high end stuff is capable of holding the level of detail required for miniature manufacture using high cost resins. The cheaper end of the market (i.e. that which was aimed at households) is a long way off for now.

On the subject of the specialist games stuff being discontinued I think it’s sad that they’re doing away with some of the best games they’ve ever produced. Blood Bowl and Adeptus Mechanicus (EPIC) were my first introduction to GW all those years ago and Mordheim is still one of my favourites.

The prices that stuff is going for on eBay now is shocking. A Forge World Tau BFG cruiser that no-one was interested in buying direct for £20 6 months ago was bid up to over £100 just because it’s now out of print.

Sad really.

Cheers

Vogon

Zuh-Khinie:

They’ll do a re-run of the models in a few years, when they’re sure there’ll be a market out there for them, without having to keep everything on stock all the time.

If Spacehulk was such a good seller, and if Bloodbowl would follow suit (if they really do release it this year), do you guys then think that GW might never do a limited release of Mordheim somewhere in the future?

Willmark:

Yeah, so if we could do that, we wouldn't need anyone to make any figures for us any more: just scan an original in, print as many as you like. I'm just saying I don't think it'll happen like that.

Thommy H
I can. People like "sticking it to the man". Some will use it for current models for no other reason other then they can.

I have no doubt once 3d printing becomes cheap enough people will print tons of minis particarily as Snowblizz notes of OOP stuff. Can't spend $500 on that OOP juggernaught? Grab your buddy who does have one and create a file for it...

That genie can't be stuffed back in the bottle. I also guess that there will be sufficient people motivated by their dislike of GW to do it.

For my own part it matters little to me personally as I haven't bought anything direct from GW in years.
