[Archive] Hell yeah this is the Galactica I wanted

Willmark:

For those old enough to remember… I’ve tried to get into the Sci-Fi channel version and I just cant seem to do it. This however would have been pimp.

GRNDL:

I think this explains the very origins and dimensions of your dementia. Poor, poor soul.

Swissdictator:

The only thing I liked about that vid was they at least had decent music… ID4 soundtrack and Crimson Tide soundtrack.

The original, in my humble opinion, was horrifically tacky… except perhaps for the first episode. The new one was very nice, especially early on.

Plus isn’t this just the original Apollo being stuck on it just like Shatner got stuck on writing “The Return of Kirk” series? It was interesting at first, but slid downhill FAST.

Loki:

I have to say that looks prity good. i loved the new series but am a massive fan of the old cylons, By your command

Border Reiver:

I loved the old series - it was the only good thing on TV for a 8-9 year old to watch at the time, but looking back thirty years later almost every episode was the same (which was awesome at the time): We’re looking for Earth, find habitable planet with possible clue to the location of Earth, populated with strangely human looking aliens, cylons arrive, multiple launches from the tubes, space battle, everyone gathers around Cdr Adama to bask in the glory of Lorne Greene, the end.

The show started really good with some tension among the survivors, but after the first episode that was it, then everyone fell behind the benevolent wisdom of Cdr Adama as supreme warlord and political figure. Everyone was a cardboard cut out of a character and once their character was established, never deviated from it.

The new one focussed on the characters and their interplay, rather than the FX and had excellent writing (except for the last episode, which in my mind cheapened itself by trying to wrap up all the loose ends and doing the bit on earth - if they’d stopped just as Galactica crested the Moon and Earth was revealed it would have been a much more powerful ending - but I digress). I have to say that having seen both series I preferred the Space Network version.

Willmark:

Don’t get me wrong the original series had issues/warts but the original cylons were way cool. Especially to a then 7 year old.

I think the original series could have bedn much better for reasons you note.

GRNDL- you’re off my Christmas card list now :stuck_out_tongue:

Maeglin:

I love both the original (pre arrival at earth, lets not meantion the second series) and the new.

For me the original battlestars were waaay better though, the episode when the Pegasus broadsides two cylon base ships at the same time:hat off is one of my all time favourite TV moments.

I’d love to have seen this made as well though, they’d have to get Dirk (Starbuck) to do it as well though.

Ishkur Cinderhat:

The old BSG was perfect entertainment when I was like 11 or 12 years old - and the new one is perfect entertainment for me now being 30+. It could not have been better.

I for my part am glad about the excellently written and acted new BSG series and that the campy restart by Richard Hatch didn’t work out - he just warmed up all the old stuff again without inventing anything new… and let’s face it - all these people really weren’t any good at acting, contrary to the new cast.

And John Colicos certainly did not deserve to be reinstated as Baltar with such a ridiculous makeup! :frowning:

slev:

The fact of the matter is that the original pilot/miniseries was awesome as it blended everything together rather nicely. The series that evolved from it though, only took a few more “family friendly” aspects of the show for the most part. The second series was worse than that, and the least said for “1980” the better. The “re-imagining” left those elements out, and used the rest of the pilot.

What it seems that Hatch was trying to do was bring back the blend of the original pilot, which seems to work out as the new series with more traditional a look and less angst and soap-opera drama (cf re-imagining series three).

Both would have been good for different reasons, but the “second coming” version wouldn’t likely have been a commercial or critical success.

Maeglin
thanks for the reminder of the final scene of the original Pegasus. Lloyd Bridges hit the OTT commander perfectly, chewing scenery indiscriminately and doing a wonderful job .

Ishkur you hit it right - the first series was there right when I needed it as an 8 year old, and the newest series was perfect for me and the wife to sit down and enjoy.

SteveM:

I like both the original 1978 series and recent series on the Sci-Fi channel. The only one that pained me to watch was the 1980 series, but I rented and watched them all out of due diligence. I would loved the Second Coming.

Willmark:

Yeah the 1980 thing was bad.

I think the thing that bugs me the most about the new series is they way the cylons are potrayed.

The vipers are definately cool however.

Ishkur Cinderhat:

You mean that they don’t “look like walking chrome toasters” anymore, as Baltar so nicely puts it in the pilot?

Willmark:

Nope the whole replicant, whose human/whose a cylon crap.

In fact the whole series feels like another Babylon 5 which didn’t appeal to me either. Not that they are the same the feel/same thing; not easy to put my finger on why I dislike it. Throw in DS9 for good measure.

I seem to have bad luck with Sc fi series I like, bring back Space Above and Beyond!
