[Archive] Hello and an After Action Report

gsteelwraith:

I’ve been checking out the forum for a while now, and finally decided to get registered. Last night I fielded my dwarves for their first ever battle, using the Age of Sigmar rules. Since it’s been so long since I’ve gotten the chance to play with my own troops, it was like a breath of fresh air. I’d forgotten how much a charge it is to field my troops, and see them somewhere else besides my painting table or stored in their boxes.

The army consisted of:

A block of eighteen GW Chaos Dwarves (spikey shakos rule), the ‘High Hats’.

A block of nineteen of Titan Miniatures Dwarf Dragoons, the ‘Pyredrakes’, led by Grulka (whom acted as my General for the battle).

Three K’daai Fireborn (proxied with three Reaper Bones Large Fire Elementals)

Jeddak Skulltaker, a converted Pyromancer (Titan Miniatures again), whom used a Chaos Marauder shoulder pad as a large skull mask.

My opposition was a block of forty skeletons, a Wight King, and a Vampire.

We played on a board with scattered woods and hills, with a graveyard in the middle of the board which was ruled to be Impassable Terrain (I imagined it to be rather built up and filled with large stone tombs, rather like those seen in Western Europe, or like the gardens of stone in New Orleans). Painted with red tunics, gunmetal blackened armour, and dark skin tones, the Dawi Zharr certainly looked the part of a Legion, and wow did those red tunics really pop out on the battlefield. For me, the model builder and glacially slow painter, this was the ‘money shot’, when I got to see all my months of hard work finally pay off.

As we marched toward the valley near the graveyard, the Undead started breeding, as a block of twenty Skellies appeared ahead and to my right early on, while the block of forty were shot at by the Pyredrakes before being engaged in combat by the High Hats. The K’daai flew toward the fight, as they’d originally been placed toward the rear, just so I could reinforce whomever needed it. At one point the High Hats were faced with the block of forty Skellies, a new unit of ten more Skellies, plus the Wight.

With Grulka barking out orders, and Jeddak snapping off Mystic Bolts, the High Hats gave good account of themselves, eviscerating the blocks of Skellies before being wiped out. The K’daai managed to incinerate the Wight and cremated what was left of the summoned Skellies before getting removed by the Vampire. Grulka’s Pyredrakes shot the other summoned Skellies to pieces before getting charged by them. Somehow, she wiped the lot of them out, without losing a single gunner. However, the Undead were not finished, not when the Vampire was still left, and there was what was left of the original block of Skellies, and a new block of ten which appeared behind a copse of trees to my left.

As the Undead surged forward, the Pyredrakes wheeled left, anchoring their right flank with the graveyard, while Jeddak summoned up a fresh batch of K’daai (he did well enough I could have had six, but sadly only had three models). The Pyredrakes shot to pieces the last of the remaining Skellies, while the Fireborn incinerated the regiment of newbies, leaving the Vampire to retreat at the game’s end.

All around it was a fun game, and all of my units did well, though it’s a toss up between Jeddak and Grulka for the title of ‘Man of the Match’. As I told my opponent, I really didn’t care if I won or not, just fielding my troops and getting in a game was enough for me.

Hello, and thank you for letting me relate my tale.

Abecedar:

Thanks for the report. I haven’t seen many from the AoS so it is good to here stuff from people playing it.

Zanko:

Thanks for the report! :cheers

What about some pics of your CD-Force?! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Hi, welcome aboard! And thanks for the report.

Would you like me to that the @yahoo.com out of your username? So it’s only gsteelwraith?

Actually, how about cutting it down to Steelwraith? The 'g' was added by my provider.

I'd love to send some, as soon as I figure out how my new digital camera works. Sadly, while I've learned how to function in the digital age, I can't say I'm all that comfortable with it.

My force's colour scheme is patterned around that of the Roman legions, so red tunics and the ashsteel armour was done with Army Painter Gunmetal (I like their stuff almost as much as I do Citadel's), with a wash of Tamiya 'Smoke', to create a shiny almost oily look, before going back with a highlight of Gunmetal. Skin tones were done with Bugman's Glow as the base coat, Army Painter's Dark Tone as the wash, and then I built up the highlights with Bugman's Glow, and increasing amounts of Dwarf Flesh, which gives a rather swarthy look to them.

Grulka won't win any beauty pageants (nor Golden Daemons), but the sculpt has a lot of character and she's kinda grown on me. I'm looking forward to painting more of these Titan Miniatures characters.
