Anyone knows which piece of artwork LordFortitude has used as hus avatar? I don’t think I have seen it before, and I thought I had seen everything

TheHoodedMan:

Hello LordFortitude,

I think it was on his Star Player card back in the days.

Snigelfot:

These heads look really good! Thank you for putting in so much work into this project. I really hope that I’ll get my hand on some :hat off

Nicodemus:

Wow. Just tell me where to send my money

Bloodbeard:

Slaves are going to Snowblizz. His idea with a plastic bag and vacuum cleaner is great. My K’daai destroyer is finished an next or me is 61 hobgoblins for my army, so I have started the casting experiments again.

Last batch I did 11 of 12 heads were good and needing only small green stuff repairs on some noses. Besides using a plastic bag / vacuum cleaner as a presure chamer, I’ve drilled a lot more holes in the mold for air to get releashed.

It’s a time consuming and messy business - cleaning the mold takes time. But I think I’ll get my own and Admirals heads done fast.

Doombeard:

I’ve been waiting since like September man! I think I’ll sit this one out … they are nice heads but lifes too short for me =)

Doombeard
Ha! More for the rest of us then.

Admiral:

Good work, Bloodbeard. The real work burden for a project like this doesn’t lie with the sculptor, but the mouldmaker and caster. Here’s thumbs held and fingers crossed for further success, and especially for castings to customers.

Of course, once you’ve had enough we should look for some company willing to buy the heads and cast and sell on their own.

Doombeard
And you are welcome to do so Doombeard. Every change you've got, you been pushing for these. That's fine of cause.

But every time my answer has been the same - no deadline. First guess was january the project would kick off (that was passed by 4 days). There wont be any money in the time spend on this project. And realisticly it'll properly never break even either.

So go on right ahead and get some gretchen/goblin/gnoblar heads and get your goblins done. you should get your gits on the table.

@Admiral: I'll see how many heads we'll get from the resin I have on hand. The succes yesterday was a great motivator. i won't have enough resin to satisfy the demands here on CDO and perhaps the mould will break too.

So the greens should go to a company if any are willing at that point.

Doombeard:

I offered to mass produce them back in august and I never heard back from you man. Why give them to a company when someone on CDO could’ve made them. Don’t understand the logic. They are your heads though so do what you like, no biggy, have fun with them and look forward to seeing them all painted up.

gIL^:

So is there a time sequence for the heads? I only want a few im still waiting

Read the previous posts gIL. ;)

Bloodbeard:

I’ve finally gotten the casting process down. The last set of heads came out perfect. The trick with a vacuum chamber made from a plastic bag and a vacuum cleaner works. Good experience to carry on. I’ve also drilled extra air holes in the mould, helps a lot too.

Here’s the thing. Admirals heads are an amazing display of greenstuff skill and it was a great learning experience for him. Unfortunately I’ve just found out that the heads are too big for my stormvermin bodies. Thing 32mm miniatures instead of 28mm.

The newer editions of models have a skinny look (empire, elves, skaven). Where the old models (multipart goblins, orcs, marauders) are more bulky and have unrealistic proportions. They would fit perfectly on orcs - fielded as hobgoblin brutes perhaps. Plus a paint job does a lot to hide sie difference.

Here’s a rather crappy picture for size comparisson. The heads look even bigger here however (like they are right in the camera). But it’ll give you all an idea of size:

Maruader, stormvermin, flaggelant, goblin.

As the heads don’t fit my skaven, I’m not motivated to cast any more heads. Not needing them myself, I would only be work to cast them (and I have a job). I offerede it to Admiral for free, but I suggested I sold it to cover some of the expenses cast into the project. Therefore I’m passing the torch to anyone who would like it.

What does that mean? I’m selling the mould.

The mould
The mould have been made by professional Danny Roper from DWR Plastics. It’s been made of the finest quality of rubber available. This means the mould should withstand making 500+ casting (6000 heads). I’ve only done 10 or so.

It is possible to make perfect castings at home, my last batch came out exactly like the greens (only needing cleaning).

Prize? It’s going to the highest bid, to whoever wants to work on the project (if someone still wants these amazing, yet big, sculpts). The mould has cost me 120 euro plus the insured shipping.

I’m not looking to get that much money back. I’m just looking to cover some of my expenses.

At 0,5 euro pr head, you would have to make and sell 350 heads (to also cover resin cost). That’s 30 succesfull castings (12 heads pr casting). So lots of earning potential - but what my life lacks is hobby time.

Heads for sale
I have 51 heads from the trial and error phase up for graps. Some of them are fine, a lot of them need green stuff work (filling an air bubble in a hat, do a nose tip, fill the back of the hat), some needs more work. It can be done with minimal green stuff skill.

These are sold on bid as well. Bid by PM and write how many you would like.

Thoughts
Regrets? None. It’s been a great hobby experience - even if it ends up having cost some money. I’ve gotten the casting process down, had a good look at how moulds work and are ready to try this again.

It’s only the motivation (and time) lacking as I’m too much of a perfectionist to use heads where the proportions aren’t completely right.

A big thanks to Admiral for doing these sculpts. They are absolutely amazing to look at in real life. He skill with green stuff is crazy and I have a ton of respect for him and any other sculpters doing stuff like this. The man is a creative genious - there’s no doubt about that!

And now that he has Fuggits emissary - the next heads will be spot on in size.

snowblizz:

Noooooooooo… this looked so promising and then they end up being too large. Aaaaaaaaargh! Solving my head issue was soooo close.

Admiral:

I’m stuck in 6th edition gigantism, it seems. I sure as hell didn’t think they’d be that large! Next time I’ll ask for, or buy, reference miniatures when starved of them. I was too much of a tightwad to do so last time around, and didn’t want to bother anyone.

Good work, Bloodbeard, your efforts and drive are very much appreciated. It’s worth gold. Thanks for the “transparency” of the process presented in your posts, and also thanks for the kind words.

Hm, I could try and sculpt new versions of the heads, scaled down, if you like. Most likely I’ll be busy with work for some coming weeks, but maybe after that? I’d intended to go for learning Scribus and try some editing work on Word of Hashut then, but perhaps that could wait.

Do you want new, smaller head sculpts? With Fuggit Khan’s emissary at my desk it should be much easier to keep the scale in line, especially since I’ve got some more experience since the headsculpting last spring. Either Bloodbeard may want to try again with new sculpts, or we could try and find some company like MaxMini that would be interested in such sculpts.

Malorndk:

Didn’t Doombeard (or whats his name?) offer to make moulds and casts already?
