[Archive] Hobgoblin rafts?

Grimstonefire:

So I’m sitting here watching Return of the King and that bit when the orcs attack Minas Tirith.

Got me pondering, if the Chaos Dwarfs were to blockade a costal fort (etc), would the hobgoblins be on rafts of their own construction or ones made by Chaos Dwarfs do you think?

Skink:

Considering that Hobgoblins are seen as nothing more than cannon fodder by their CD masters, at first they would be loaded on a cheap and crude floating device (and pointed towards the enemy). Than the CDs could evaluate the situation and plan an eventual siege accordingly!

Of course, this is not going to restrain the greenskins from building their own rafts. Now, a kunnin Hobbo Kapt’n would be awesome indeed!

Admiral:

There were Hobgoblin-manned ships in the Chaos Dwarf Man o’ War navy, and they were clearly propelled by engines, thus constructed by Chaos Dwarfs. But rafts? Hobgoblins would be able to whip up some entirely of their own, and their overlords wouldn’t be unlikely to provide some simple, mass-produced rafts for the slave soldiers. Both variants would likely exist.

Bloodbeard:

What would the purpose be? Hobgoblins are usually used to thin down enemy numbers, before the CD master move in to finish the killing.

If you want to hold a costal blockade, I think the Dawi Zharr masters would do the major part of that job. Steam driven, ironclad with rockets and magma cannons to shoot anything that tries to sail out. Mortar to bombard the city into terror.

I don’t thing hobgoblins would be part of the actual blockade. More used as part of a terror weapon, to put a strain on enemy costal defence. The CD ships destroy the enemy shooting capabilities first, towers with catapult etc. Ater that it’s a waiting game, and the enemy would put troops on the coast. Like in LotR, where the rangers of gondor take up defencesive positions along the bank.

Now I can see hobgoblins being send in on cheap, wooden rafts. Filled with hobgoblins, a couple of bolt throwers, bow and flaming arrows. Trying to get to shore, disrupt the defenders, cause mayhem, make them tired. Wave after wave of rafts. Doesn’t matter if some or most of them go down, they are not meant to actually break the enemy.

Being few in numbers it’s all about minimizing dwarfs casualties, time will seldom be an issue for any dwarf. So I think CDs make excellent besiegers of any castle or city.

ashur:

Or they just drown a million hobgoblins to make a bridge.

Abecedar:

I’ve used rafts for goblins assaulting across a river. A few sank and lots of goblins drowned. It was fun, so I reckon it would mainly be hobgoblin built rafts unless it had an important mission like taking a demolition charge up to a wall.

GeofreyShank:

I could see hobgoblins as crew on a engine powered boat but not without Dawi-Zharr overseers. The Khans would most likely command crude boats filled to the brim with their fellow hobgoblins.

Kera foehunter:

I would say that the hobgoblin would make there own raft as the would go under the protection of the cd and going to the ogre kingdom and destroy the forest of there old over lords or maybe just make log jams where they would make it in passable for any ship movement and put tower on it to gaurd them
