Great progress! I really like these models as well, if I ever were to do a 3rd Chaos Dwarf army they would be the way to go… Will you have any banners for them?
Btw, regarding the eyes. I think it would be enough to just add some flesh tones above and under the pupil so they won’t stare.
Thanks again for the comments (and slaves ). @Bloodbeard - I was looking at doing the rock thing, but I can’t figure out if it would actually help. It seems like they need to be 5 cm or such in the air before it would help. Could you give some pointers. Also - I can see your from Denmark, witch part of the contry are you from?
@TheHoodedMan - The bases are gonna be reeeeally simple this time around. I have started and stopped my different Chaos dwarfs armies, so this time it would be of grass and gravel. Simple. The grass is that fluffy stuff, though. Hoping to give it more life, than just the coulered gravel.
@ Pyrostick - Like all of the other miniatures the 1. rank were easy. The other rank however is another story. Luckely I just plan to run them in two units of ten to take out chaff.
So here are my Command groups. I decided to take the pictures with flash. It’s not very flattering and sort of distorting for shades and painting. However, I felt that it would be worse if it was just dark tones to look at. If any of you can reconize the banner from Bloodbeards profile, you are quit correct. It’s the danish national flag - “Dannebrog”. At first I was thinking “maybe this is totally wack”, but then I was like “Hmm, haven’t seen this on too many banners before, and come on, how many times do you get the chance to be patriotic while playing warhammer” - besides, I actually like the coulers.
Fits suprisingly well with the colour scheme. I think you should add some thin black lines between the red and the white.
And perhaps add a large Hashut or other chaos dwarf rune in either the middle or the upper left cornoer of the flag. Also with a black outlinw. Colour should be brass like your armor.
Thank you guys! - it’s really nice with both feedback and words of encourgement to keep up the steam.
Today I been looking at making fillers and making the units rank up. At this point I would like to give some words about the whole process, so that you can get a better understanding of what have been going on.
1. I bought this whole range of miniatures from RA. Theese are my experiences:
- The reason I choose this range, was that I thought it was a modern look for the old GW range. I continue to have this feeling and are very happy with the miniatures (Even the ones I thought were kind of beneath the RA standard have proven to be quit cool in real life.
- The customer service was excellent and i recived the miniatures within a week (from russia to Denmark).
- I really like the detail on the miniatures. However, I don’t know if this is important to you, but the metal seems to be somewhat different from what GW uses. Also there is some kind of powder on them when you first open the bag. I can highly recommend you washing this of (will come of if just putted in to water). It makes them more pleasent to touch and more easely glue.
- The cons are however also quit real. A big problem for me was the ranking up. The great-weapons models were somewhat doable (took about half an hour), but still way to big a hassel when playing tournaments, and you have to be quick about it. The Hand-weapon/shield guys I found to be impossible and the blunderbuss models, cannot, under any circumstances, be ranked in more than 1 rank, without a gap to the second rank.
To fix this I made a filler in both the GW unit and the HW/S unit.
This gave the GW unit more air (so to speak) and it gave a better impression, as it wasen’t so bombastic/massive/crowded anymore.
In the HW/S unit the filler also made it more doable, but ultimately I choose to cut of some of the ends of their weapons (at the back side of the hand). This was somewhat painfull, as it is irrevesible. But it made the whole thing alot easier, and it took about 5 min to line up afterwards. What I did was that I started ranking them up, and each time the hilt of the weapon was in the way, I quickly tried to see if any of the other guys would fit, and if not, I cut it of. I ended up cutting of 3 hilts, and 1 tip of the hilt. I think this is the way to do it, and I actually don’t think it hurts the miniatures to much (also, who in their right mind would be holding their weapons in the middle. Realistic it gives a much less powerfull blow, than if you were holding at the end of the weapon).
- Another con is their parts. They have choosen their gluing points to be the wrists of the soldiers. This makes it both impossible to make another stand where the weapons won’t be in the way for the next guy, but also makes the gluing very unstable. I fear the point when I have to transport the miniatures. I forsee a pining project in the future.
- A different thing is the Blunderbuss’. Some of their hands are almost non touching with the wrists. However, I don’t know if I’m just the idiot for choosing the wrong weapon for them, but I could defently not find any their fit, some of the models. This also being another con, as there are not any manuals following the miniatures and they clearly write on their website that some heads won’t fit som weapons (How in the world am I supposed to figure this out, sitting with 30 miniatures?).
- One more, minor thing, is that the Command groups, comes with slots and the bases don’t.
I don’t know if I diden’t get any manual because I decided to order them with out boxes - just in bags. But if they haven’t got one, it is a big con.
All in all, quit happy with the miniatures, but the cons is substancely. They recuire time and patience.
At this point, I would also like to ask you about the rating system. I can’t quit figure it out. I can see my blog got 3 stars, and most other have 4 or 5 stars. Is this a user rating or numbers rating. Can I do anything to change it? I tried to searh the forum, but couldn’t find the answer.
I would also like to thank all of you who are following along, It’s nice to know that the work I’m putting in is being seen by others than me Also thank you for the feedback. It has been very usefull. I would also like you all to just ask if you got any questions.
- @Bloodbeard - Great idea about the outlines of the banner. I will defently do this after the bases. I don’t thing I will be making any runes though, but great sugestion !
- @Tjub - The eyes needs to be fixed, and I’m glad to hear that you think it can be done with some fleshtone only.
The fillers look good and makes the unit seem much less cramped.
Rating: Is user given. Scroll to the buttom of a thread and there is a dropdown menu called “rating”. Not many users use it. Just start giving threads what you think they should have. 3 is average. 4 is good. 5 is insanely awesome. So if you want to rate, you might already have an idea of how certain blogs fit into that.
Thanks for taking the time to review these models its very helpful. You’re the first person I’ve seen to paint up a full RA army, they look good together. Sorry to hear about the pains but I’m sure its all worth it in the end, they do look great, and you’ve done a great job of ranking them up. Maybe Rozmax will work his next units to be a bit more rank friendly, imagine doing 50 hobgoblins with bows!
Here is my last update for a while. I have been making bases. Some of you might notice I have ranked them up in units of 25 instead of the full 33 models I have to each of the close combat units. This is because I don’t expect to use any more than that and if I do I will take it from there.
This is the HW/S unit with bases. The rest haven’t been made yet and I won’t post pictures of them for a while. I need a break from painting now
The making of the bases were pretty simple. With my last CD army I tried to make lava bases and they were horrible, so I decided to just use Gravel and Grass. I started by painting the base brown, so the tone where the grass or gravel maybe missing, woulden’t stick too much out. I then applied patches of grass. Then i applied the gravel and last I used some black wash to make some couler differences in the gravel.
Oh! And Bloodbeard, as you might be able to see, I took your advice on the black lines on the banner and the small numbers on the bottom of the model
