[Archive] How to straight a bent model?

Loidrial:

Yesterday was my birthday and my friends gave me the World of Warcraft table top game from fantasy flight, the one that came out in 2006 (amazing imo)

I own Descent 2 from the same company and the models are quite good looking, the same goes from this game that is 10y old already.

BUT

some of the models are bent, is isnt hard plastic like gw ones, it is more like a soft/rubber feeling plastic, so some smaller parts are bent like in this picture below.

Do you have any idea/suggestion on how to make those weapons straight again? I wanna at least paint the main characters, 8 horde 8 alliance.

I’ll wait for some feedback because i have no clue.

FOR THE HORDE! :hashut

Slavemaster Hod:

Warm water (you might have to play around to find the right warmth because sometimes the warm needs to be actually hot). But start with warm and work your way up.

Put the mini in the warm water for varying lengths of time, pull it out and try to bend it into place. When the temperature is right, when you bend it into place, it should pretty much stay in the right position. But when you are happy with your bend, clamp it or by other means, make sure the piece is forced into the straight position while it dries (this is so it doesn’t bend back a little during drying).

Air heat (flame) is the other option, but it’s only a last resort that very well could make the bend even worse.

Fuggit Khan:

As Slavemaster Hod said, warm water can often work. Another option is using a hair dryer.
Sadly, the real culprit behind the softer polyethylene plastics miniatures being bent is the simple fact that this type of cheaper plastic ‘cures’ (dries) slower than higher grade polystyrene plastics…and often the mini’s are popped outta the molds quickly and tossed into a box, tray, whatever, before they had enough time to cure. So they often get bent against the bottom of the box, under weight of other mini’s, etc and dry like that.
And Happy Birthday

Abecedar:

What they said.   You could use some kebab sticks to splint them while they cool down

cornixt:

Hot water bath, hold in shape, then ice water bath for short time.

Grimbold Blackhammer:

I’ve never had any luck with hot water. I wait for a hot day, put them on the dash of my car while I’m driving around. Once they are warm, I just bend them into shape and take them out of the sun. Yes, I have had one “accident” where a model was left in the sun too long…
