I’ve painted up two IG models with a slightly different paint schemes. One is with Red/Copper armor with black trim, black beards. The other is with Black/Copper armor with red trim, reddish beards. Let me know which one you like better.

HOW DID YOU GET THOSE RED BEARDS
TELL ME
I DEMAND IT!
(Obviously, I vote red beards. Heh)
Admiral:
It’s difficult to say. You have a good, deep red armour colour that would be a shame not to use. The red beardling is fine, but I think the red armour wins over black armour plating.
DAGabriel:
Very similar to what I intend to do, my vote would be the red plate, too. Want to present mine in the BSL.
The Bull`s Head on the shield is a nice touch, too. Did you model it?

Very similar to what I intend to do, my vote would be the red plate, too. Want to present mine in the BSL.Back when GW used to sell bits, I ordered 100 of the back banner poles that came on the Big hat heroes/sorcerers. I used the round center piece of those poles as shields for my Big Hat CD Warriors. You can see some pictures of those in the IndyGT Dwarfs of Chaos book. Anyway, I had all the banner pole tops lying around which amounted to around 200 bull heads. I figured I'd use some of them. I just filed down the back of them to thin them out enough to glue to the shields. As far as the red versus black plate is concerned, the red plate is much more forgiving from a painting perspective. Black is a pain to highlight correctly (IMO). Every little mistake stands out much more than on the red.

HOW DID YOU GET THOSE RED BEARDSI've tried about 6 or 7 variations of the red beards. It's not easy to make it look natural instead of Yosemite Sam cartoonish. That red beard was basically just orange paint, washed with GW Ogre Flesh, then highlighted with orange/beige mix. I also painted a few that have a more auburn color, deep red/brown instead of orange. I used the Reaper Master series Red Hair Triad for that. It's a lot easier and faster painting black/blueish beards instead of read. It's one reason why I think the red plate/black beard scheme is going to win out since I have to paint 120 of these (60 hw/shield, 30 Blunderbuss, 30 Fireglaive). I may reserve the red beards for my Deamonsmiths and Bull Centaurs. It will make them stand out as something different. I almost imagine a new Chaos Dwarf baby being born with red hair and everyone knowing the next Daemonsmith has just been born type of thing.

Great painting btw

JMR:
I vote red. The black armour lacks definition as it is right now.

CopperPot:
Forget the paint job, what you have done with the shields is just excellent.
Skink:
Black beards and red armors definitely!!! Looks great.
Karring:
I vote for red one.
Both are excellent painted though.
tjub:
I prefer the first one.
Da Crusha:
cool looking paint schemes and shields. I prefer the first one. its the red armor that really does it.
Kronosv13:
Red armour dark beard, looks much darker and sinister.
tvandyke:
Thanks everyone for the comments. It looks like I’m going with the red armor, dark beards.
Baggronor:
Red. The black looks cool too, but at a distance I think the unit would look indistinct and won’t catch the eye, which would be a shame.
Grimbold Blackhammer:
Good choice on the red armour and dark beards. One question - why is the blade of the axe a different colour than everything else? It looks so out of place that it caught my eye.

It looks so out of place that it caught my eye.I've always felt dwarfs and especially chaos dwarfs were masters of metallurgy so using different types of metals for different purposes isn't out of the ordinary. I just feel the axe blade should be made of steel. The rivits on the armor are also steel so even though they're small, there's still a little there to show there's two types of metal being used (copper/steel). On my war machines I've used bronze (which I've been trying to oxidize with verdigris), copper and steel. To be honest it might not be the best color choice, but it lets me play with different metals and it helps make the painting a bit less boring.
