[Archive] Is Green Stuff just Green Stuff?

clam:

I usually buy the Green Stuff from GW, but as my CD army needs some heavy GS-work, i’ve bought the GF9 low price stuff now.

I have tried it a few times now, but it won’t behave like I want it to - it’s eighter too soft (to much yellow!) og too hard (to much blue!) - I really can’t find the right mix. It feels right when mixing it up, but after 30 minuttes or so the problem shows. It won’t stick or it can’t hold the details. Never had this problem with GW stuff.

Does anyone now what I’m doing wrong here - or is just that Green Stuff ain’t Green Stuff - is GW just better?

wallacer:

The stuff Heresy miniatures sell is cheaper than GW and seems to work fine.

Thx Pyro.

Now anyone with GF9 experiences?

GRNDL:

GS might always be GS, but as with all things there is a quality issue. I mostly buy my GS from GW, but their blue-yellow tape format isn’t the best. There is a narrow band in the middle of the tape where the two halves meet that are already reacting to each other before you even mix it. This usually results in a “knot” or “lump” of semi-cured putty that gets in the way of sculpting. I sometimes cut away the middle bit and use whats left. (Only sometimes, I’m lazy)

The best GS you can get comes in two seperate packs, but you usually have to do it mail order.

Maybe this is going to confuse the thread but there is also Brown Stuff, which dries/cures a lot harder than GS. Its great for slapping armatures and forms together before going to the GS for details, etc.

Xander:

I use GF9 GS exclusively. Works great for me.

clam:

@GRNDL - yeah! know the GW problem with the hard knot. And I also use Brown Stuff, but not for curly beards, chains ect.

I use GF9 GS exclusively. Works great for me.

Xander
@Xander - do you use it in a exact 50-50 mix or …? - And how long - after mixing it up - do you start working with it? I usually let it rest for about 15-20 minutes!

Ishkur Cinderhat:

I use the GF9 Brown Stuff for those things that need to be really hard in the end (like horns or weapons), and this tends to lose its stickyness quite fast. I don’t know if this can be said about all GF9 materials or if it is indeed special to the Brown Stuff.

Malificant:

my experience shows a 70-30 mix of yellow to blue.

Willmark:

I use 50%/50% GF9 GS and it works just fine for me.

AGPO:

When measuring proportions I tend to make a number of small equal sized balls of yellow and blue putty. Its then much easier to mix the proportions you want

Xander:

50/50 is the standard. If you want it softer, use more yellow, if you want it harder use more blue. Not sure what else there is.

I have no Brown stuff experience, but I just got some, so I will see how it works soon enough.

Kera foehunter:

i just type in green stuff on e-bay i got 2 tubes of blue and yellow for 25.00

i also use a 50 /50 mix on figures

AGPO:

Wheres the best place to get GS in the UK?

Ghrask Dragh:

I get my GS, brown stuff and pro-create from Heresy Miniatures.
