[Archive] JD and the slow march of the Dawi Zahr

[align=justify]Companions :hat off

I’d like to invite all of you to join me on this, probably very slowly progressing army blog, of creating my first very real Chaos Dwarf army.

As i’m mostly a collector of several characters from a given army, or a warband that can be fielded in Mordheim/Necromunda, I don’t think i’ve actually once finished a finished army, however sad that may be though. To make it even a tad more sad, I actually love to play the game. In practice this breaks down to me having a bazillion unpainted models with maybe one unit finished. But alas, its early 2017 (best wishes to you all) and one of my two new-years resolutions is to both start and finish a Chaos Dwarf force that can be used to play a game of Age of Sigmar with (I guess 2 units, a character and a warmachine within 1 year should be doable). The second resolution is to grow more beard :).

To give you a bit more of a background - in the unlikely event you missed the epic post in the introductions thread - i’ll give you some shots from my hobby highlight reel. If you ever want to know more please feel free to ask. I’ve started playing around 2000, so collecting in 97/98’ish. I do consider myself a  young man, but when i’m at my local hobby store and i’ve been asked the question with this as an answer the younger generation looks at me as if i’ve fought in the great war, back when people still called it that (I’ve read that somewhere, I’m not actually that old).

But I digress, hobby highlights; my first love has always been the Dwarf, be it chaos or normal (sorry if this insults anyone). My second love is the Death Korps of Krieg (of which I’ve actually managed to finish about 3 units, a HQ and a knight). Last months i’ve also been painting the Genestealer cult, and on the side I’m modeling/painting a necromunda warband (also loving it). Lastly I love night goblins!

For this blog i’ve decided to use just as I suppose it should, an ongoing army blog where i’ll be posting my updates as they come, so not only finished units. Everyone is most welcome to join me on my journey and either admire or despise what you’ll see, though if you think the latter please just swear at the computer or laugh about it behind my back ;). On the other hand, I’ve been spying on this forum for a while now, and you all seem like a busy and above averagely friendly community, and I’m sure ill need all your support in order to push me to finish what i set out to do.

First post - which ill be doing from the Netherlands by the way. The start of my group of fierce warriors. My first nights work:

Slavemaster Hod:

Welcome and I like the faces on those guys. Looking forward to seeing more. What color scheme are you going with?

Jackswift:

Welcome Johnny.  A good start, and great models to start with.  To link bigger images, copy the URL of the full size image from the image hosting site you are linking to and then click the “Insert image” icon on the control panel as you type up your post.  Paste the URL into the window that opens.  It will add text that looks like the text below (without quotes and ignore the Code heading) to your post:

I usually note the size of the original, and then resize down a bit to around the 500-700 pixel size for the post by taking my original size (ie. 1280x800) and editing the opening image bracket to reduce the size by however much you want (ie.

Bloodbeard:

Welcome aboard! It’s always nice to see a new blog pop up on CDO.

The beard and skin tone of your models is very nice, good looking stuff.

Regarding images. You should make yourself a photobucket (or similar) account for your photo uploads. Copy Image URL and the URL into the code

BABIS:

great start! do you already have other models from the “big hats” range?

Bassman:

Great start and excellent choice of miniatures! Big hats still rule in the 3rd millenium!

Those round bases hurts my eyes, I’m too old… but well this is the damn AoS era and I cant’s do anything by that.

I should admit that those “fatty” old plastic should fit better on round bases that the square one.

Looking forward to see your color scheme.

Fuggit Khan:

A very nice start and it’s always great to see a new blog start up here :cheers

And as others have already pointed out, the skin tones of the faces is very well done…and even though I’m sure the gray is primer, somehow the gray works beautifully with the faces and beards, I’m almost hoping you will go with a gray color scheme :hat off

Those round bases hurts my eyes, I’m too old…

Bassman
Me too, I’m too old fashioned to ever get used to round bases…the old fart that I am

Lovely models though <3

Malorndk:

Bring the hype. Welcome to the forum <3

Abecedar:

I didn’t notice the round bases. I guess my mind just blanks out the horror these days.

And it looks like another excelent painter has been drawn into the noble ranks of the Dawi Zharr

Pappa Midnight:

That’s certainly a very good start! I also love the skin tones and beards!!!

Weirdly enough I was asked on another site why I base my CDs on squares bases… I must be another old fart…

JD reporting back in. I hear there is some soul pain with regards to the round bases, which I fully understand. I however, love the fact that we switched to round bases. For me it feels like the models stand out more. We’ll have to see though how it will be when units are formed, because god how cool does a 4x5 blunderbuss unit look!:hat

As to if I have any extra models, I actually tried to control my impulses, and as any decent Warhammer player will know, bought more than I should’ve from eBay the same evening. I’m expecting some command group models and I managed to get the following Chaos Dwarf which I intend to use as a regimental champion:

Furthermore there are some things coming in, which i’ll show you all as soon as I have them and can take a picture of them. Promised.

I am however, proud to announce the following:

A dear friend of mine who I consider a very talented non-professional sculptor has agreed to take on a little vanity project for my army. That means that he’ll be making me 2 characters - a sorcerer and a lord - that will lead my Dawi Zahr. We are still discussing the details of the model, but I like the static and bulky feel of the 92’ sculpts and intend to design characters fitting in with that. My task at hand is to scour the internet for art that can help my friend get an impression of what I want, so I’m looking for - sorcerer first - art with cool big-hats in them, cool staff idea’s, cool beard/moustache art, etc, etc. If you think you have a piece of art that I should definitely consider, please let me know in your comments!

Note: It doesn’t have to be art of an entire sorcerer or lord per se, it can also be a blunderbusses, but with a very cool big hat, and than i can look at the big-hat to see if that can go on the model.

Final thing, with regards to the color scheme, I’m going with the classics, red and gold! I have some eastern european blood so I want to give them something of a Russian/Polish hussar like feel. For the bases i’m also considering mountainous/snowy bases. Hmm… maybe I should’ve named my blog Kislev Dwarfs? Anyway, feel free to react with your thoughts!

- END OF RANT -

I had some spare time yesterday and today and manage to get quite a bit painted on the warriors. I do have to say that painting the hats was a lot more effort than I’d expected based on how the models looked!I usually end to go overboard with the amounts of layers, but I tried to keep a ‘sometimes less is more’ motto in the back of my head when painting these. I quite like the feel they have now, but let me know if you think anything could be contrasted a tad stronger (the red is what i’m still thinking about). I made the tips of the hats a tad darker after the photo was snapped.

Without any further ado:

What do you think? :hat

- JD

Slavemaster Hod:

I like them. The details on top of the hats adds a nice touch.

I feel like a little bit of a wash on the gold could add some depth to it. What gold are you using?

BABIS:

a very classic CD scheme, awesomely executed!

Bassman:

Cool color scheme my friend and nice addition to the army.

I know the feeling about ebay compulsory purchases

I’m very curious to see the sculpted dwarfs in 5th edition style. Very curious.

About snowy bases that’s great idea. I did it for my Dark Elves and it looks great. I like the idea of CDs living the North or fighting to control a mountain pass in the middle of snow storm so I approve snow bases.

Another week has passed, and I didn’t get quite as much done as I would’ve liked, but at least I am making progress. Before I continue, lets show the goods:

Now the last two pieces of the puzzle kind of weigh on me. I don’t like to use the contrasting colors green/blue/purple, but they could use something to make them pop a bit more. The base and the shields are going to have to take care of that. I was considering mountainous snow bases, but maybe dark underground bases could work as well. As for the shields, I have literally no idea. I’ll be using the shields that come with the chaos marauder horsemen set. I think they will do fine, and as I’ve seen it seems to be the general consensus with other chaos dwarf players as well :).

Anyway, I’d love to hear what you think about it?

As for the characters I’ve so eagerly promised, I’m happy to announce that conversions have started today!

JD

Abecedar:

The marauder shields do have more character. For some reason I keep putting off using the round ones I already have

Bloodbeard:

Very nice look on those guys. Snowy mountain bases will be a very good contrast to the dark colours on the dwarfs.

Marauder horsemen and marauder infantry shields are great. Much better than flat round shields. Other suggestion could be to find some of the very old chaos warrior shields. They are cool as well.

Pappa Midnight:

The Marauder shield are very nice and would probably be my choice for using with classic CDs.

I have some GW Fyreslayer shields which I am saving for some Character models. They look quite chaotic with the spikes and blades on them but probably not so good on classic infantry.

Sjoerdo:

Very clean painting, nice, lets finish them up now!!

You are from the Netherlands?

Admiral:

Marauder shields are perfect. Don’t hesitate, unless you have an even better idea here. Good progress and neat paintjob so far.
