[Archive] JMR's full custom Legion of Tzeentch (750p upgrade done)

JMR:

Hello my fellow Dawi Zharr :hat off

I wanted to share with you what I am currently working on. This is the start of a Tzeentch army using the Legions of Chaos list from the End Times. Basically, I want to add a few deamons to my warriors army. The goal is to make something that looks cool and allows me to paint stuff that I want to paint, not to make a killer list. At the same time I want to put the couple of old deamon models I still have to use.

I’ve decided to go all out and make something unique to fit my image of a Tzeentchian host. That means all models are cobbled together from home-made bits. The project is part of a “Tale of 4 gamers” thing where me and 3 others start with 500 points and take it from there. Apart from the modelling, I also want to try out a (for me) new paint style.

Anyways, here’s the first model:

This is at base a standard Chaos Warrior for my army, although I changed this model up by giving him a flail (where the unit is supposed to have additional weapons) and the flaming hand. He’s probably going to be the unit champion, but he might serve some time as a hero. Either way, the flail and flaming hand were done because I felt like it. Figuring out what to use it as comes second

He’s currently floating a bit, but I’ll build up the base to make it so his left foot and the flail are resting on the ground.

He still needs some tidying up and I wish I could add tzeentchian details to his torso, but I’m not sure I have the skill for that! Opinions are welcome!

Dînadan:

Nice work - I’m guessing bloodletter and Dark Elf bits kitbashed together? Think it works really well

tjub:

Looks great! Good luck with the new start…

Bloodbeard:

That dude is freaking cool!

furrie:

He looks awsome, can’t wait to see him on the battle field. And Dînadan the legs looks like daemonette legs and the ball and chain look like the one in the plaque monk kit. The rest of the bits I’m not sure.

TheHoodedMan:

Looks cool. A slender type of warrior, it looks very tzeentch like. I dont think you need additional Tzeentch details, the armours elaborated enough for my taste. You can show the Tzeentch feeling by color choice, that should be sufficient.

:cheers

JMR:

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Dînadan
No Bloodletters involved! The torso is obviously (unfortunatly obviously) Dark Elf Cold One Knight, re-done in greenstuff because I just can’t find a bits site selling them anymore. Legs are elfish bits from a 3rd party modified with deamonette legs. Other than that… dark eldar, corsairs, plague monk (good boy, furrie!), mantic zombies…+ lots of cutting and swearing. That’s about it I think.

I’m slowly working on more of them. I have 7 in various stages of construction at the moment, so more to come!

JMR:

Right. I haven’t really been very good with keeping this thing updated. This army is now sitting at 750 points. I’m working on the next upgrade which will contain a BSB on Deamonic Mount.

What do you think? Does it need more highlights or should I leave it like this? :hat off

----

I’m using a spare Zombie Dragon head as the base here. I’m going to see how it ends up if I try to bring it back to life by sculpting flesh and skin over the bone structure. I hope that won’t prove to be beyond my sculpting skills…

I’m also giving him small wings and a feathered tail. His head will get a nice “mane” of feathers too. The mock-up feathers on his arms are too big here and have already been cut down a fair bit and redesigned (longest feathers near the claws, instead of other way around). I’m currently busy sculpting the feathers on the plasticard wing-frames. I’ll try to take another picture when there’s something to show.

I’ll also see if I can make some decent photo’s of the already finished 750 points.

Edit: Here’s the first of the painted pictures. The unit champion of my chaos warriors:

Admiral:

Great start to the army! Custom-building is rewarding, though takes time. Looking forward to what you come up with next.

JMR:

Thanks for the reply, Admiral.

Here are my Chaos Warriors with additional hand weapons and a mark of Tzeentch. They’re accompanied by a Sorcerer, the current army general.

The Sorcerer isn’t actually completed, most notably his horns and base. I also haven’t done anything with the unit standard, simply because I just can’t come up with a suitable design for it. If anyone has suggestions for it, please feel free. I’m looking for something simple and sleek…

Admiral:

Very good start to the army! The empty eye sockets (Myrdraal?) achieves a creepy look, and the glow effect is convincing, particularly on the standard bearer. Speaking of which, perhaps best to hold off with all standards until you’ve come up with an icon style for the army? The white horns may occasionally give off the appearance of bunny ears when you look at them, since they are the same pale colour as the skin, but for the most part they reinforce the malevolent look of the models. Best Tzeentch warriors I’ve even seen, and bonus points for that trampled man.

JMR:

Never heard of Myrddraal before. A quick google shows that it might be a good source for inspiration. Thanks for that!

And yeah, the glow on the standard bearer looks surprisingly good on the photo. I was impressed myself :cheers Not sure it looks that convincing in real!

Grimstonefire:

I’m not sure about the white horns as well, imo a light wash of purple at the base of each would help.

But otherwise really cool conversions.

Fuggit Khan:

Nice! I like the Night Gobbo icon on the sorceror’s staff (I’m assuming he is the sorceror?)…such a great icon that lends well to so many armies/conversions. The glowing blue affect on the swords and mace/flail is also really cool :hat off

JMR:

I appreciate the comments, although I think I’m going to keep the horns as is for now, but I’ll keep it in my mind.

The basic concept for painting these guys was making everything in shades of grey, with black armour highlighted by mixing in white and the heads white, shaded with black. I changed that by giving the skin (and the shading on the heads) some more, but still dull, colour. That way I would get contrast between the armour and the heads, between the “dull” figure and it’s bright swords and to a degree between the blue swords and the red(ish) bases. Part of this reasoning is also why I haven’t used any gold yet, although I might give that a try on key parts, not sure yet.

Does any of that make any sense?

@Fuggit: Yeah, that’s the sorcerer. My very first army was a Tzeentch army and I used those icons on my shields (eye of Tzeentch etc.). So I felt it was appropriate to use it again.

Speaking of which, part of the reason I’m making this army, is because I want to return to that Tzeentch army I had/was trying to make/wished for in 5th or 6th edition. I loved mixing in a few Deamons with my warriors, most notably a couple of Screamers who won me the battle plenty of times. (Killing a lone Lich Priest making the army crumble :h). The Legion of Chaos rules allow me to do just that. So I finally got to dig up my old metal Screamers and give them a lick of paint. More on that later though.

The first 500 points consisted of those Chaos Warriors + Sorcerer and a Chariot:

Rather difficult to get everything in focus, so here’s a shot of the horses:

And the carriage:

It floats! It actually used to float higher of the ground, but adding the two crew members made it sag a fair bit. I hope I don’t have to support it after all…

TheHoodedMan:

It looks absolutely great!

JMR:

So, having played our 750 point battles this weekend, I’d like to share the additions that I’ve made to my army.

First up, 3 screamers that I got for my birthday about… 10 years ago, finally painted!

Not too keen on how the paint turned out here, but they’ll do…

The other new addition is this spawn I’ve made:

Probably not the most useful unit in the army, but I just really wanted it in there. I like the idea of having a small annoyance moving about and hopefully landing a nice flame template. It didn’t help that everyone tried to shoot it though! It died before it could do anything on 2 out of 3 battles.

As for the model, the tree is obviously a bit weird. I’ve had second thoughts about adding it on there, but I figured I’d just go crazy with this guy. Part of the inspiration for the tree came from Aekold Helbrass. Wherever he would walk, plants and flowers would sprout from the ground. A crazy contrast with the death and misery that chaos tends to bring.

My intention was to paint the tree as a blossom (cherry)tree, but painting the lichen proved to be rather difficult to do. So it retained most of it’s green colour. Maybe I’ll give it another try, someday. (Knowing me, probably not :D)

Lemme know what you think!

Admiral:

Great additions to the army! I like the tree in particular, clever choice there. Personally I think it looks better with a touch of green remaining.

TheHoodedMan:

The spawn is very very cool looking, really inspiring. The rat ogre`s a great model to work from. Have some slaves for that!:cheers

Bloodbeard:

Yes! That Spawn is awesome! Absolutely fantastic man! Loving the weird tree growing out of him - a good way to add some beauty to the chaos.

And being a huge fan of converted/warhammerfied toys myself, I’m looking forward to seing the monster go somewhere.
