[Archive] Lords on monsters

Bronze Bull:

Hello! I’ve been playing 8th edition using Thommy’s codex and I was curious if I am either A. using lords on monsters wrong or B. They are just not advised in the new edition?

For a few games I’ve put my Sorcerer Lord on a Llamasu or Taurus and used them to move about the battlefield and shower magic in problem spots. The problems I’m running into are:

1. Being targeted by enemy missile troops and slaughtered

2. Committing my S.L. to a flying monster. If I decide it’s crucial for it to attack enemy artillery, then he moves away from my guys. If I charge an enemy unit that’s engaged my warriors or Bull Centaurs, he gets tied up there.

3. Bigger, badder monsters like the High Elf phoenix chasing him off or hunting him down.

How do you guys use Lords on Monsters?

Bloodbeard:

I can’t speak off ThommyHs armybook, because I use LoA.

But a few things on monsters in 8th edition:

Keep them out of enemy line of sight, because they will get shot to death and cannon sniped.

I use my bale taurus to get in range for the killy short range spells and ram the taurus into combat to give me an edge. THe bale taurus has nice special rules for staying alive.

Check out MadHatters thread on “Dual Bale Bomb” and the Daemonsmiths Handbook here on CDO for further advice.

I use ThommyHs book as well, and field monsters now and then. I find that it depends a lot on what your opponent will bring, we only play friendly games so there aren’t any gun lines. But still a monster i a gamble, as Bloodbeard said. If you want him to get into combat don’t use a sorcerer and give the monster a breath weapon. That helps a lot.

I use a Lammasu frequently, be he dies a lot. Either by muscats or cannons, but its such a cool monster and Im really fond of my model as well. So he sees battle more than he should…

Same

Lammas suck. But my advice run Lamy with lore of unDeath.

Bronze Bull:

I love the LLamasu, but I have no idea what would make it better.

Game rules that reduce cannon sniping would help.

TheHoodedMan:

I play a Great Taurus some time and it`s great to be very mobile and support other units in Close Combat.

I always give the Charmed Shield and try to get rid of enemy artillery before I move him out behing obstacles.

For most strong opponents the monsterlord is not good enough in combat to kill them alone so be careful with that. But flank and rear charges work great.

Lore of death is obviously a good choice because you can use the short ranged spells well and if you have to make a hazardrous move a purple sun can be placed where it hurts.

Thanks guys! This was helpful.

Lammasu’s are awesome if you’re playing End Times Rules.

For Tournaments, I normally run my Level 4 on a Level 1 Lammasu.

1st - Summon Fulcrum - This gives him a 3+ Ward, Hard Cover and Immune to Multi-wounds.

2nd - Depending on the Fulcum you’ll have 360 line of sight and high enough to see most things.

3rd - When you’re on the Fulcrum if your charged only one model can step forward, most player’s will use there killy Hero with a … Magic Weapon. Magic Weapons are mundane against the Lammasu.

4th - Magic attacks or Miscasts, on the Fulcrum you’ll get a 2+ ward as you have Magic Res 3 plus the 3+ Ward sweet.

5th - Cannons, they can take anything down, but if you’re runnign a Lammasu, Destroyer and a Steam Tank. They have to kill something, which leaves the rest of you’re army to pillage.

6th - Lore of Shadow, just brutal in a Chaos Dwarf army de-buff and then hit them with Hashut nasty.

If you’re running straight 8th I’d go the Bale of even the great Taurus. I typically run a flyer in most of my games for a couple of reasons.

There fun and look awesome.

Zanthrax:

I stole wolf’s lammasu idea for the end times tourney we both attended and I agree it worked great.

I did not come up against cannons but against a goblin war machine heavy army the saves on the fulcrum etc meant he ended up using his war machines against other threats.

Oh and I beat wolf 11 - 9 too if I remember correctly when we did play.

Hi Bronze Bull. You might like this battlereport between Bloodbeard and me.

I have a lot of monsters(including a lord on a dragon) in it and talk a bit about my reasoning for including the stuff I do.

I don’t know the armybook you are using(not Tamurkhan I understand) but I think my reasoning could be well applied to anyone considering lords on monsters.

If you have the time you might as well read the whole thing, since both of us deal in a lot of monster movement.

TimothyLeighton:

My Lammasu is painted, my Bale Taurus isn’t. So it’s always the Lammasu. As hard as the Prophet is he’s not really great for fighting (the Castellan can do that if you really want a fighty character). On a Lammasu I find I’m mentally far more cautious (cos the Lammasu could be punched to death by a pretty much anything) and so the Prophet ends up flying around, causing distractions, unleashing short range, hex spells and this one time the Lammasu used it’s lore attribute to swap places with a Kdaai destroyer. Which after the game I worked out was totally not allowed.

But it’s a Lammasu. It’s fun!
