I have about 6000 points of painted big hats (some pictures of it are in the Indy GT book) but I’m starting a new one from scratch using the new Forgeworld models. Here’s my first completed model, the Magma Cannon.
Thanks. My goal is to stick with the reddish beards on all the models. In my old army I used Red armor, accented with brass and black beards. I gave the wizards and bull centaurs red beards. With this army I want to go with black armor (infernal guard) accented with copper and red beards. Maybe I'll do something different with the wizards. I don't know yet. Hopefully it looks okay.
It does look great and now I know what supposed to be in the top of the boiler bit "Lava" that would have had me stumped without seeing yours

I repainted the Lave 6 times before I ended up with something I was happy with. I ended up googleing images of Lava flows to get a decent template to work with. I found painting the Yellows/Oranges/Reds first then blackening the areas I wanted with black soot weathering powder (thinned with spirits) worked the best. I just started using those weathering powders and I'm still getting used to them, but they're awesome for soot, rust effects.

I like your beard idea will copy it,Im going to use tallern flesh with a black wash to make the skin look dirty .
Did you use the weathering powder for the oxidised copper around the edges?

Nope. I used Vallejo Verdigris Glaze watered down. When it dried it didn't quite have enough of the Turquoise/Jade look (too white) so I added just a bit of a watered down Turquoise/Jade paint mix to it. I think I may have actually made it a bit too bright. I think I'll dial it back a bit on the next one. I was playing around with it so much I was beginning to think it would never get finished so I left it the way it was. I was going for something that looked used/weathered but not so much that it looked neglected. It's a tough line to draw. I imagine the crew would take good care of the cannon, but at the same time I didn't want it to look like it just came off the show room floor (something I used to aim for).

I'm really loving the new GW washes. The Septia wash works great for the skin and hair. I just used a light orange paint washed with septia. I added a bit of the red ink to the septia to it once to compare and the beards end up a brighter, fiery red. I almost went this route but decided on the lighter red/orange. I wonder if a mix of different shades of red hair on my Infernal Guard would look out of place.
