I have the beginnings of a CD force right now, saw the Mantic offerings online a few years back.
Any suggestions, pros or cons for these figs? i realize they are plastic, with some metal, how do they rank up, quality and size wise, with other CD figures out here?
Are the sculpts worth it?
Apologies if I missed a review somewhere…the forum is so BIG!!!
The Abyssal Dwarfs were originally made up of vanilla dwarf plastic sprues, with metal “upgrade” pieces to turn them in to Abyssal dwarfs. I haven’t had any of those sets myself, but from what I read, they weren’t always the best fit.
Currently the sets are being changed to move away from metal. The Immortal Guard were re-released as sprue-less plastic/resin a while ago. I -think- that the regular infantry is set for a re-release as one of the first things coming out in the new year. I have to say that this isn’t something that I have been keeping tabs on, so I might be wrong here, but I’m pretty sure I’ve read this somewhere.
As for the models themselves, Mantic models tend to be less customizable than other kits (Although… don’t think you can customize the “recent” GW kits anymore either). Generally the feet and torso are one piece, often with the left arm molded on as well in case of shield bearing troops.
They should rank up just fine amongst themselves. I feel they have quite a different aesthetic from Forge World models though, but I think you can tell that by just looking at the pictures
I’ve got some old MiniFigs and Hinchcliffe historical figures,
It’s amazing what a good paint job will do for those old, mono-pose figures. Back then the quality was good, but of course not as animated or detailed as most of the sculpts produced nowadays.
Gives me motivation to get the brushes out again and get to painting! I’ll try to remember all those old things I used to do, technique wise!
In my opiniom mantic’s abyssal dwarfs are very good choice. They are cheap, original, they fit in rank. The pictures of them on website are Little bit messy. Good, clean paintjob can make them a lot better. On the other hand as our Dawi felliws already said Abyssals dont have big variety of poses and some kits (atleast the old ones) are just regular dwarfs with metal upgrade pack. Making them fit well with minis is pain and struggle, and it albo needs greenstuff filling work.
You can justify by yourself if its worthly to buy them. For me they are doing their job just fine (Ive had an army of FW dwarfs and I like mantics better… Strange :p).
At the moment I got an army of mantic undeads and started to collect abyssals (after I Paint regiment of blunderbusses i will make army blog btw)

I remember hearing something about that too...Mantic already has released newer versions of the blunderbuss/decimators, which I think are really nice (with multiple head/helmet styles included for customization). I especially love the look of the new gun barrels, a big improvement over their earlier gun style: http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/kings-of-war/abyssal-dwarfs/product/abyssal-dwarf-decimator-troop.html
so hopefully the rumors of new infantry models will be true, always good to see new evil dwarfs :hashut
