I was just going to start this exact thread. I’ll get my werewolf kick from this + more undead for me I think.
Time of Madness:
Did this just start today? They are almost at there goal. It will be interesting to see if any of the big limited prizes get picked up.
The highest pledge so far is $275.00 (which 3 people have pledged).

I'm not really a fan of Mantic's mini's, but it's good to see them getting supported :)
gIL^:
I find it awesome that mantics doing well, But shouldn’t Kickstarter be for new companies that can’t afford to do this already?
Mantic won’t die without these donations and is it possible a smaller business that needs help might suffer?
Werewolves would be awesome!
Shakhorth:
Well they got their target of $5000.
brotsorrow:
Forgive me for not understanding this “kickstarter” since i am new to any other miniature company than GW and FW - this guy wants people to donate money to help start off new armies that we have to purchase?
Golder Goldeater:
Good news from goodol’ Mantic!
Kera foehunter:
I like to see more on there ogre!! now this has my attention
cornixt:
They have more than met their $5000 goal, including a couple of high-roller bids. I’m not sure why they did this though, surely they could have raised that money themselves through a small business loan - unless they are already heavily in debt!
I was hoping Kings of War would remain a free rules system.
Time of Madness:
I can’t believe how much money this has raised! It has really exceeded Mantics expectations (of $5000.00).

Shakhorth:
At the moment they stand at $26.000 and it’s still going.
Still got 28 days to go…
MLP:
well I looked at it about six hours ago and it was at $170 so it’s doing pretty good! $5k is a bit low really, I’m sure they’ll do very well. Having 28 days left they could easily earn half a million.

"New Stretch Goals -
if we hit…
$15,000 - a free copy of the electronic rules for every pledge over $100 and their copy of the hardback rulebook signed by Ronnie and Alessio.
$20,000 - we will sculpt the Ogres Army from the video. This unit (3 models) was not scheduled for ages, but this level of funding will let us get them done! We will add them to the site on Monday with a ‘buy 1 unit, get one free’ choice too.
$25,000 - a free lithoprint of the new Mantica map for anyone who has pledged at the $100 level or above - and it will be signed by Ronnie.
$35,000 - Mantic Dice - we will change the dice from normal D6 to ones with a Mantic splat on one face. All pledges for Soldier and upwards ($35+) that have dice will now get a set of the new limited edition plastic ‘Mantic Splat’ dice instead. The $5 dice set will now be Mantic splat dice too.
On Monday we will set further stretch goals and post some new plastic projects that your funding will allow us to deliver. We will also update the available pledge levels with Abyssal Dwarf, Twilight Kin and Goblin armies and all the new units. Please keep the suggestions coming via the comments above, or on the Mantic Games Facebook and the Mantic blog (they are really helping!) "
Looks like there will be the goblins and Abysal dwarves up for grabs on Monday as well. I’m also interested in those ogres!

I’m really suprised to see Mantic using kickstarter. It’s supposed to be for small start up businesses, whilst Mantic has an established business and range. It’s really just an attempt to duck out of some costs, and they’ve gone down in my estimations.

If all they needed was $5000, they should have stopped once that goal was reached.
This just looks to be free income for them right now, & to clear themselves of debt.
Surely if they just made the models, people would buy them & then generate the money they needed, as they have done so far?
Am I missing something?

A traditional company takes a risk and hopes you'll want stuff, this is a way to make stuff you know people will want. Benefits both sides, they have less risk and you can get stuff that might not otherwise be done. Other miniatures companies have done polls or other pledges, this is a more formal way of doing it.

The way it is done depends on the project. E.g. it could be a sort of pre-purchase system or just donations, or a combination thereof. Most combine both.
I don't really feel it's appropriate to say that this technology/phenomena may only be used by X. You imply some other needy cause wants for this. That's just not right.I'm really suprised to see Mantic using kickstarter. It's supposed to be for small start up businesses, whilst Mantic has an established business and range. For one they cannot stop a drive even though it reaches it's goal. It runs it's time, successful or not. It probably makes sense to set a lower goal because if you fail to reach the mark it all fails. Clearly Mantic underestimated their appeal among people. So they should go to hell for that?
Mantic is a tiny flyspeck in the scheme of things though. I would still classify it as a start-up. Of course they could keep on doing what they do. But maybe they aren't as successful as you imply. This allows them to jumpstart ranges they might not have done or at least speed the process up. Yes it's lower risk and essentially free money for them, but then again if people feel this is a worthy cause to support who are you and I to complain about that?
AoW is running a drive currently too. In both cases they have bigger plans than the companies themselves can finance. Take AoW, what Spanish bank can they go to for a small-business loan today? When any of them could fold tomorrow. Sure they could grow organically, but that takes time, time we could cut shorter if we want to see the continue to succeed.
Take Rich Burlew and OOTS reprint drive, he asked for 58k to reprint some of the books. Could he have done it another way? Sure. He could have invested in one book run and waited until he made money back from that to print another. He chose to kick-start the reprint drive instead (pun intended). He got 1.25 million dollars to not only reprint ALL the books (allowing people like me to get hold of the whole series now), but fund other interesting stuff too for his fans. He writes some interesting stuff about the experience too.
Are you missing something? I don't know. It entirely depends on your POV. Makes perfect sense to me to use Kickstarter or something similar.
Thommy H:
They ask for money in return for a reward if a target is met. Anyone who wants to gamble on that investment does so. If enough people do the same, they get the rewards and everyone wins.
Where’s the scam there? It’s ethically absolutely neutral. No one gets conned, everyone knows what they’re getting into. It’s about removing the middle man from commercial endeavours - customers support something with their donations, the company rewards them for their help with product. Democracy at work.
Fair play to them.
Discoking:
Can someone explain the concept of money to me?
I think I’m missing something.
Thommy H:
You know that thing the cannibal tribes that will rove across the blasted surface of the planet a century from now refer to as “the great evil that destroyed everything”? It’s that.
