[Archive] Mega Battle - the End Times

tjub:

We will play a mega battle using the end times rules, Chaos Warriors and Chaos Dwarves vs two Undead armies. And Im wondering if you have experience with mega battles and winds of magic? Will 2d6 be enough for 6000pts a side or are there are suggestions on how to handle it for bigger battles?

gashnag:

You could do storms of magic rules for magic dice generation 4D6 with the opposing team getting dispel dice equal to the two highest dice rolled with 24 power dice cap

Malorndk:

I’m having the exact same considerartion for the exact same purpose. I’m considering that for each 4000-5000 points, 2 additional D6 are rolled for power dices, from which the defender gets the highest count of dispel dices as normal. But I’m not sure it’s fair or could work.

Dînadan:

The easiest way around it is play a game of Triumph & Treachery. 2D6 is sufficient for 3k games and the way T&T rules work, in any phase you’d effectively be playing a 3k game so it’d probably save you the headache of working out how many power dice/dispel dice are fair and allows for allies to backstab eachother.

Grimbold Blackhammer:

I organize two mega-battles per year and I’ve tried a variety of power levels. At 6,000 points (and assuming no duplicate magic items: ie a single dispel scroll), magic-lite would be 3D6 per side, magic-heavy would be 4D6 power dice per side. I suppose it all depends on how much you want magic to influence your games.

Vantraxx the Thrice Cursed:

I go 4d6 for anything 5k and over

tjub:

Thanks for your ideas, we’ll have to consider what to use…

Malorndk:

Remember to also raise the amout of total dice that can ce in the temporary pool at once. No reason to roll 4D6 to go: “Yeah I got my 12 powerdice this turn as welll…”

Zuh-Khinie:

Last year, 9 friends and myself played a mega-battle with 18k at each side. For the magic phase, 4d6 were rolled.

However, there was a huge problem with this, and during play we upped it to 6d6, because our opponents used quite magic-heavy armies. Our side not so much, and we had to make up to them after our first turn (in which we completely destroyed an army worth 3k with magic and shooting alone).

We played 6k chaos, 3k chaos dwarfs, 3k chaos dwarfs, 3k chaos and 3k chaos vs 3k skaven, 3k tomb kings, 6k vampire counts, 3k dark elves and 3k dark elves. Battle took almost an entire day to complete, and we obliterated our opposition from the first turn 'till the last. Can’t really begin against an opposition which sports 4 hellcanons, 3 earthshakers, 3 magma cannons, 6 death rockets, and which gets first turn

Good point, we just double it so 24 max

IMO you have  a responsibility when making an army list for a mega battle, to not make it into a cheezeball. Ive played in these mega battles before, when we fielded an 8000pts goblin army against 8000pts empire gun line. If I remember correct we only played a few turns before being to frustrated with out opponents who were very happy with the way the battle went. All of our six giants were dead before turn two, slaugtherfest. Needless to say we lost interest in that club a long time ago and these days the mega battles are a lot more closely fought.

Here are some pics from the fight, Chaos and Chaos Dwarf victory. 6000pts a side with the fords as 500pts objectives.

My Hobgoblin ballista managed to pot shot one of the VC generals! :idea

My Kdaiis tried to cross a Ghost Swap but the all got dragged down... :o

Zuh-Khinie:

It’s always a cool sight to see large painted armies face each other on a big and well-filled table

I agree, but the problem is that all armylists were written independently from each other, so I brought no more warmachines than I normally would in a 3000pt army (ie. 2 death rockets, a magma cannon and an earth shaker), but so did almost every other player on my side of the table.
When using Tamurkhan rules, chaos armies can get a tendency to become extra cheesy when they get backed with CD warmachines (which they can bring along themselves).

Anyhow, how were your experiences with the big battle? How did you solve your magicdice problem?

And a quick last question, those forests on the table, did you make them yourselves, or did you buy them?

They were made by a friend of mine. I think its a flocked styrofoam base with tree branches and terrarium plants. But if you visit his blog you could just comment anywhere and ask him. http://thenickeninja.wordpress.com

About the winds of magic, in the end we played with 2d6. Since thats what the undead players felt was ok, but for the next battle we will up it to 4d6. 2d6 and some bad dice rolling on their part really cut some of their magic phases out. And next time we will se Nagash himself on the table as well. :D

Bloodbeard:

Very nice pictures Tjub. Did the battle get mixed up? Or was it like two parallel battles all along - from the pictures it might seem like that.

My favourite pictures are all those of your giant obsidian destroyer looking down on everything - even a terrorgheist!

Admiral:

Wow, that battle looks great. Your gaming group have very nice armies. :cheers

Wow... that Necromunda table is just :o
I think I'll spend some hours on your friend's blog...

And playing against Nagash, is there something you think you can field that stands a chance against the greatest sorcerer ever (I have no clue what he costs in points though)?

We'll have to see about that. Ive no idea. :P

For the most part we had two seperate battles with some commando style units supporting the allies. Our aim was to keep it a bit separated since we had two objectives and two separate armies on each side. But for the next battle we will add a center objective which we forgot I guess. Maybe even try to incorporate my CDs in the Chaos host.
We played for eight turns to be able to maneuver a bit extra as well.

tjub:

…also for the upcoming battle, we talked about only allowing spec characters for lords. To get away from the kind of A1 Lords and more of a do the best you can with what you have approach.
