If they weren’t so expensive I’d be very tempted to use them for K’daai… I guess I could add a couple every few months. I really like these models. Take the wings off and sculpt some flames around the legs and on the shoulders. Job done.
Not a fan of them, although I suppose if you removed the wings, spirits, armour and skull fillings and used some Lizardmen bitz you could make some undead Kroxigor.
I think they are an example of terrible miniature design. That core of the miniature would look good if not painted in that weird ‘Eavy Metal style. But I really don’t get the whole jetpack part. The wings looks completely static, no movement at all. So what’s the point? How did these guys look when the were alive, did the wings work then? Or are they undead constructs of Nagash’ imagination, that just doesn’t use them?
The design doesn’t show those wings moving in any way. And that combined with the spirit fire keeping them afloat makes it look like “evil genius jet packs”. … No! But of cause the don’t fly, they hover.
Kill then with fire! … at least in the game. The have some very nasty stats.
They are resurrected angels from the god of light (Ptra or something?) that he send down to kill Nagash in his first attempt to seize the world. The god underestimated Nagash power, and basicly delivered him some nasty playthings. Thats the short lore version. Ill reread it next week to correct my initial understanding (which is what is posted here)
Yeah, and they’re more like twisted constructs than skeletons of something that used to be alive. Basically Nagash is powerful enough to just reshape cadavers on a whim, hence these guys using ribcages as necks and having armour embedded in their skeletons and stuff.
Id love to know what the minimum points cost of an army with Nagash, the 3 Mortarchs and 2 Morghasts is as Lords choices. Not a Nagash only army but a full VC/TC one with Lords at 50% . Probably over 5000 if Nagash is 1000? Perhaps we are seeing a sign of things to come…Warhammer hitting an wh40k Apocalypse scale.
Morghasts aren’t characters. They’re Special or Rare choices depending on which weapon they have.
The battle report in the latest White Dwarf has an Undead Legions army with Nagash and Arkhan as the only characters though, and it’s a 3750-ish point game. I don’t think anyone expects to use all three Mortarchs at once!

They would need a bucket of skeletons to raise in that case! :D
So a quick artists impression of what I have in mind. It would need more greenstuff flames, especially on the base so most of the feet were covered. If I bought a set of spirit hosts and painted them as flames that would make it a lot easier…
Now that looks damn cool! Unfortunately ranking 6 of them on 40mm bases is utterly impossible, and I reckon that a single one would look lost on the massive 100 x 150 tray…

Yeah I guessed that they were a special option but probably only available to take if you include Nagash as they are his bodyguards or something right? Theres an Army on the gw website at the moment for about £500 which includes all three which is what got me wondering. I guess its so you can choose which ones to use rather than use them all togeher.
At 80 points a model for 3 ST5 attacks, that’s half of what a Bloodcrusher does for the same price. I don’t think you’ll see a lot of these. They do look pretty cool though!
They can be used in any VC armies and any undead legions. No specific character’s required.
They are special and rare units depending on their equipment (The halberd is the rare unit).
In my opinion they appear to be good but overpriced. I have often been wrong about undead models before though.
I’ll say it again, if you want to ask about exact rules from Warhammer: Nagash Book II, just send me a PM and then I will help you guys. I know the rules cost a lot, but I have made the investment and will gladly help others understand the rules better, so our discussions doesn’t end up in guess work about already released rules here on CDO.
@ iamahobgoblin:
If you want to field Nagash and his released Mortarchs it will be:
Nagash (1000), Mannfred+Arkhan+Neferata (3*650 = 1950), Vlad (500) and Krell (250) = 3700 points of lord choices. Meaning at least a combined host of 7400 points, including 1850 points of core units and 1850 points for heroes, special rare or more core units.
If you want to field Nagash and all his 9 Mortachs it will be something like:
The above mention (3700), as well as:
Walach Harkon [The first Blood dragon on a zombie dragon, with a lot of figthy powers and items+a Mortach Aura] (700-800)
Dieter Hellsnict [Level 4 Necromancer depicted to ride some sort of undead bat creature. An Abyssal Terror probably. In previous editions he was on a manticore, but that doesn’t make sense with current trend of undead mounts. Throw in some magic items and an Mortarch Aura] (450-500)
The Nameless [An ancient and incredibly powerfull spirit, able to puppeteer living men to do his wishes. In the lore he controls an insane amount of empire troops at the same time. This one would need to get some houserules, and will probably be broken as hell] (Depending on rules you make, but probably at least 500 points because of the utility he brings)
I’m sure you could wrangle enough with the models to fit them on 40mm bases. They wouldn’t make bad K’daai Fireborn. With some flames they’d be good. The innard skulls are a selling point for Chaos Dwarf conversions, since it ties in with the Hellcannon barrel’s faces.
